Today is a special day for me. I was given some of my Grandfather's medals by my Grandmother. My Grandfather's name was Alexander Nosal and left the U.S. Army as a Master Sergeant. He served in Hawaaii and the Pacific as a B-52 Engineer. I have yet to figure out what all of they are and the history but I am looking foreward to finding out.

My grandfather ended his career as a Lt Col in the AF flying B-52's. Glaucoma grounded him. He was given the option of a desk, or retire. I honestly believe he should've stayed in, he never was the same after he retired. Flying was all he knew.

He flew B-17's, B-25's, B-26's, B-29's then B-52's. He had to ditch a B-29 over water one time, I have the actual report in a safe. That report went on to change the entire training program for B-29's, aswell as issues in it's configuration.

One of my mom's good friends was a Lt Col and flew B-1's out of Abilene, which was fun when he flew over PK Lake during the off season and middle of the week, can sit in the house and all of a sudden every window shakes, those sumbitches are LOUD when they do what they're not supposed to do over populated areas :P.

Anyway, I asked him to look up my grandfathers record one time, and they had a house out at the lake too so one night we were sitting on his dock, and I asked if he looked up his record, and the most he could tell me was yes, and that maybe one day I'll be able to know what he did. There was very little he could actually tell me, but that I should be extremely proud to be of his blood line.

I hope one day to find out all he did, chances are pretty slim. My uncle has all his medals, which frankly was staggering. I've only seen them once, and my grandfather never talked about any of his combat flying. Only thing he ever said was "In a B-52 you never actually land it, you simply arrive". All I know is he was shot down twice over italy.

Anyhow, from one B-52 grandson to another, It was really cool to see this post.

My grandpa was an aircraft mechanic in WW2 and worked on one of the planes that carried one of the two nuclear bombs we dropped on Japan.

Not all of our ancestors were great combatants. Some were just the guy who made sure the great combatants were able to get off the ground, stay floating in the water, or keep the treads moving.

Yep, my grandpa was a technician. He never was face to face in combat, but he made sure the boys still had working equipment.

My grandfather's brother was a crewman for B-17's stationed in Cambridge during WWII. His daughter began travelling to England many years ago, after his death and heer mother's death. She actually has a cottage near Cambridge. We began to research family history and learned of her dad's service. We have pictures of him standing in front of the plane with the nose art visible. Al;so pictures of him in his flight suit and dress uniform in England during the war. He was single then. There is a pub in Cambridge where the airmen would hang out. In a back room the British girls would write their numbers on the ceiling in lipstick along with notes to the airmen. Faye had been in Cambridge several years and been in the pub but had not gone into the back room which was preseerved as a shrine. After she became interested in the history she went back in the room and there on the ceiling in bright red was a note to her Dad. She's still working on tracking down who the girl was.

I thought that was a great story
