View Full Version : GoodYear Eagle GT -Any real world GTO reviews?

I will bash GoodYear with a lot of the rest of you, but really only because I've never cared for the truck tires I have owned in past years.
I saw these Eagle GTs today, and they are a great looking tire. The online pics look terrible. I have not even been considering these until I saw them in person. They get mostly good reviews at that big online tire store.
As much as I'd like to act like I'm some maniacal 'race everywhere and everything on the street' type guy, and must have the stickiest, hardest sidewall, coolest, most expensive tire, I'm not. I just want something a little 'sporty' without paying a fortune.

I can get these installed for just less than $600 after a $25 GY rebate currently offered.

I was wondering if anyone had any 'real' experience with these.
Any input?

Ron

BTW - I have worn out my General Exclaim UHPs after 14,000 miles. I have no complaints on them, but would like to move up to a little nicer tire. Also, the place I always buy tires from doesn't list them any more.

I'm considering these too to replace my Toyo Proxies 4's. I loved my Toyos but I think it's time to try something different.

I had them put on this winter after a tractionless day. They are much better than what was stock, and they aren't expensive.

I like them a lot, but I will upgrade to a better tire this summer.

That tire is certainly an entry level tire for our car considering the age of the technology.

Let me know what size you need and I will be happy to price you an inexpensive tire if that is what you are looking for.

Either way, I will be happy to help with any of your tire needs!

I thought they were a new UHP all season. What makes them old technology entry level? Just curious because I was considering these but ended up with the BFG SS A/S for my winter tires.

I was not aware GoodYear redesigned the GT. They have used that name for years on a tire that was similar to a BFG Radial T/A.

Sorry for any confusion I may have caused.

I work at a tire shop and they are the replacement for the lower mid grade GT HR and so far none of our customers have had any complaints and we put them on anything from dodge neons to mercedes s600's. I would have run them had I not set my mind and budget on some nitto 555 tires.

I currently have these on my G8 GT... I like them so far... I have way more dry traction compared to my bridgestone potenzas. Great tire imo.

What size tire/wheel combo are you running?

I went on a ride and drive with Goodyear last fall comparing this tire to the Eagle F1 All Seasons and the Kumho Ecsta ASX. The new Eagle GT was definitely the most predictable of the three, especially on transitions from wet to dry pavement. The F1 All Seasons could be driven harder, but weren't as predictable IMO.

I have sold quite a few sets of these on different cars over the past few months, and have had no complaints at all so far. In fact, I am strongly considering these as my next set of tires, because of their 400 treadwear number and price. A very good buy IMO, no doubt about it.

very good tire
will buy again after they wear out
pro's -- real soft, hook up well, not loud as road noise
cons---because thier soft they pick up rocks

I am also looking at getting these tires as soon as this damn snow is gone. I agree these tires look MUCH better in person. Great reviews , low cost and you can get them at almost any tire shop or dealer.

I wasn't going to argue with a guy in the business, but I was wondering......

I've only had mine for a few hundred miles, and I would like to wear the new off of them before I give a more detailed review, but, the sidewalls seam stiffer than the General UHPs I just took off. I don't notice as much 'roll-over' during spirited cornering. The tread feels softer on the GYs, and the car rides smoother in every way. Better traction in the dry and about the same in the wet as the Generals.
I won't even try to compare them to the terrible OEM tires.

So far so good. Nothing earth shattering, but no complaints yet.

I am interested in anyone's experiences with either of these two tires. After the OEM KDWS tires wore out at 25,000 miles (loud miles at that), I have had two sets of General UHPs. I got 30,000 out of the first set, and I currently have 28,000 on my second set. They are good handling tires, but get loud after 10,000 miles. So, when the current set of tires wears out (probably within the next 2k or 3k miles) I am probably going to go in a different direction, although I think the Generals are good tires. I am interested to see if any of you have long term experience with the Eagle GTs or Proxes 4s. How is the treadwear? Are they quiet? Do they handle well? How are they in the rain?

Thanks for your replies.

Hi, I'm the new guy.

I switched in November from UHP's to the F1 All-Seasons, and I just got done running cross country on them moving from Washington to South Carolina. I can post my thoughts on them so far to date if you want.

What's your [tire] longevity secret?

I can't get more than 15K miles out of any tires on my GTO, and I do rotate.

How many miles on your GTO? You ever have the alignment checked? Do they wear even? Oh, and what brand/model of tires?

I have my Traction Control disabled, squeal the tires occasionally, smoke 'em once in a long while, and have probably nearly 20k on my Eagle F1 All Seasons. They've still got good tread on them.

48K miles by now

The OEM KDWS were not very lucky because the alignment was crap from the factory and I didn't catch that until it was too late.

I did the alignment at about 10K miles and things got better. But I don't think that alignment shop did the best job they could.

I have gone through another set and a half of KDWSes, set of Fuzion ZRis, and now I am on General UHPs.

I got the Generals just before 40K miles and had alignment done at that time by a very good shop.

So far so good, the Generals are holding up nicely. I already rotated them once a couple of months ago. No signs of uneven wear.

This has been exactly my experience too. Better sidewall that you can really feel when pushing hard, a bit softer ride due to running lower pressures thanks to the stiffer sidewall, a little bit better grip in a straight line in the dry, and about the same wet grip (the Generals have amazing wet traction).

Best part is they seem to be holding up much better and they're non-directional, unlike the Generals.

For ~$10-15 more per tire, they're definitely worth it. Great tires.

I wonder if living in a hot climate has anything to do with it. I also noticed an improvement when I had someone else other than a dealer do the alignment, but it wasn't long before I lost a strut mount bearing and Pedderized the front end.

Someone told me it could be stuff in our asphalt, like coral dust. I took it with grain of salt though.

It's a large combination of stuff. I took a set of 60k tires out to 75k before the engine in it died. I could have went that summer before I had to think about changing tires out.

Some factors:
- Surface temps. Most tires get killed in the summer/hot months
- Driving style. Goes without saying.
- Maintenance on your vehicle. If you and your car/truck/etc are in tune with each other, and you follow the maintenance schedule for rotations, and you watch your air pressure and the other tell-tale signs that come with the tire wear as a result of a bad alignment or suspension issues, this will solve, in my opinion, over half your tire wear problems.

You just have to know what to look for, after that, its easy money.

There is some truth to it, but not something to go and quote as gospel on.

I put a set of these on last Friday. Good ratings on TireRack and a total installed price of around $600. They look good in pictures and even better in person. Unfortunately, to my eyes, they don't look as good now that they're installed on my car (I'm running the factory wheels). The tread is a bit "bulky" looking for lack of a better word and is prominently seen because it spills over the lip of the sideway quite a bit. I parked next to another black goat a couple of days ago with F1s, and the F1s look better in my opinion. But oh well, I don't care too much about looks.

I've had two sets of the stock tires up to now, so that's all I can compare these to. These seem to have a louder tire slap over joints and slightly louder road noise overall. Turn-in feels the same. Straight line traction is better. I drove in the rain the other day and they gave good traction. No snow since last Friday so can't comment on that. And I'm only approaching 200 miles on them so it's to early to tell how they will ultimately perform.

My 2 cents.

Can any of you that have been running these for awhile give us an update of how the treadwear is on these tires so far? Looking to buy some in the next month or 2

Also on some other online reviews I've read people claim a 1-2mpg loss with these tires have any of you experienced your gas mileage go down with these?
Thanks!

i had the F1 all season and i got the GT. i really like how predictable the GT is compared to the F1's. also I may of gotten a bad batch but my F1's seemed to ride rough after 8K. thats the whole reason i switched them.Has this happen to anyone else??
