NFL News...Possibly lengthening the Season & Change in Draft Order.

Today on ESPN John Clayton confirmed that at the most recent NFL Owners meeting...all 32 Owners voted for a change in the Draft order starting next year. Things will stay the same for the Super Bowl Champ and Runner up (32 & 31 respectively), however there won't be a situation like this year...where New Orleans makes the Playoffs, but still gets to select ahead of 16 non-playoff teams. The idea is that the Wild Card Teams won't be able to draft any higher than the 21st draft position, this may close a loophole that teams exploit.

Commisioner Goddell announced that he is for lengthening the season to 17 or 18 games. What this means...more real football. The feeling so far has been shorten the pre-season (taking away 2 or 3 games) and possibly starting the season earlier. The down side as far as the Players is concerned is...a longer more grueling season.

I think there is an opportunity to here for the NFL, meaning finally get "REAL" Farm Teams in the form of an NFL Developmental League. There is a ton of talent that doesn't get drafted nor looked at because the Player doesn't have a good agent. There are a ton of Colleges out there that don't get seen because they are not on TV. There is too much talent that can be covered, a Developmental League will give these guys a chance...then they can move on with their lives if they don't make the grade, the other things is...guys like TO will shut their mouths and play the game.
Some people will elude to NFL Europe...problem is, it cost too much, and it's not "their" game, it's ours! Let's cultivate it.

Thoughts...

Umm... New Orleans didn't make the playoffs.

I agree with adding more regular season games and dumping a preseason game or 2.Most teams know which players are going to be on the team in the end so why go through a meaningless preseason risking injury to star players.

I like the way the draft is now though,I wouldn't change it.

I'm glad of both changes. It gets rid of the useless long preseason, and now prevents teams like the Chargers form jumping teams like Indy in the draft. That was unfair.

Another change I'd like to see is standardized weeks off. For example, last year Baltimore had something like week 4 off -- so by the time the playoffs rolled around -- they had been playing for months without a break.

I wouldn't mind seeing all the teams get a week off at the same time -- although that would never happen. Maybe all of the AFC gets week 8 off and all of the NFC gets week 9 off -- something like that.

the rule that is really going to suck is the one that they made this year that prohibits blindsiding a player when trying to block him or anything like that (aka the hines ward hit from last year). cmon... its football, not ballet.

Also the Ed Hoculi rule has been made (fumbles/incomplete passes can now be reviewed)

BTW... the Texans also played 15 straight games.

There are rules in place that say during what weeks bye weeks can take place. It is done at random. No rules need to be changed in that regard.

I'd like to see a shorter preseason and a longer season. I think 17 weeks for a season would be ideal... you'd have no .500 teams at the end of the season, either a winning record or a losing record. I like it.

Well there needs to be a rule to offset a call like that. The game was really over when Cutler fumbled, but the Chargers got screwed with that horrible call.
