View Full Version : Powder Coating my wheels. Need some Ideas.

Bought these wheels from Spyral. 18" They need to be blasted down and re-finished. Figured powder coating would be best.
Can't decide what to do. I have been thinking anything from full black chrome to matte black with a gloss red lip.
Help me out with other ideas. Car is PBM.

IMO Chrome is always good with PBM.

Go with matte black with a red lip.

I like chrome too, but there are too many imperfections. Would take a lot of work to make chrome look good. I want to powder coat and be done.

I have PBM with gloss back powdercoated stockers. Get compliments on em all the time. I don't think the matte finish meshes well with a glossy paint job, just my opinion tho. Either way those will look nice in black.

PC them gloss black. Have them media blasted first, they would look sick!

Have you done any sort of color on your car? Post up a pic, do you have the red interior?

Red interior. Light smoke on head lights, fogs, and tails. I wll be blacking out the emblems front and rear

With that much evil darkeness, I tend to agree to some color on the wheels, I'd do a dark grey face with a red to match the interior on the lip.

IMO, a gloss black, satin black or flat black would look sick, and as for the red, i would do a pin stripe around the out side of the wheels.

the thing people need to realize with powdercoat, is that if you get a scratch in powdercoat, you can't just buff it out as if it was paint. you usually have to just live with the scratch.... it doesn't really chip but yes, powdercoat still scratches.
powdercoat is great for suspension parts, but not the optimal finish for an exterior part. if that was the case, everyone would be powdercoating all their bodypanels

Now this doesn’t work with a flat finish, but the PC place I use does a clear coat over what they call “Super Chrome”.

satin black/semi gloss black (45-55 rating) center with a chrome/polished outer hub/lip. the satin meshes really well with clean and dressed tires.

True, but not.
When are you gonna get chips/scratches in your powdercoat on wheels??
The only way it will happen is if you hit something with them, a curb, etc. Your wheel is fked whether it is painted or powdercoated.
Powdercoating is way more durable than paint!

Powdercoating is way more durable than paint I pretty much agree with you, but I fall back to the fact that powdercoat never looks as good a paint on something like that.
I'm being a bit fussy when I talk about scratches also. I'm not talking about a scratch that you lose color on. I'm just talking about the type of scratches that, if you had them on a car you could just buff them out, but on something powdercoated you can't
I think coated rims are great, but I figured I'd just throw out a little more fact for people to think about

this changes things.... lol. no i kid, but i see were you were trying to go, and its understanable about the scratches, but i do agree that it would be hard as hell to get a scratch on them, its just that you mention that powdercoating is ideal for suspension parts and not so much exterior parts and thats were i disagree, thats all. no biggy.

I got a good deal at a place here in Ca called Endless Powdercoat. He stripped/blasted/coated all 4 for a little over $400. Course you'll need some extra coin to have the tires mounted/balanced at a tire shop once the coating is done.

As far as all the talk about scratching, I did find that I had to change my method of cleaning the wheels once they were powdercoated. The powdercoat is as sensitive as paint so brushes, even paper towels can add swirls. I just use microfiber cloths and they're fine. Also grab a can of Krylon Fusion for Plastic spray paint and hit up the lug nut covers to complete the look. No sanding or prep needed on the covers, just make sure they're clean.

My wheels looked perfect when I had them done, looked better than paint IMO. I don't like black wheels that are gloss, just not how I like it. I had mine done satin black and they look so much better than any gloss paint or powdercoat.
To blast and powdercoat my wheels was $380.00.
To the OP, I was going to buy those wheels before you did, I would have done the same color I did to my 18's if I was you, no red ring.
As far as cleaning, if you use the same soap and water you do on the car they will always look brand new.

I was reading a article somewhere on powdercoating and it said not to blast them as prep, that they should be chemically stripped due to damage. Which kinda worried me since I had my 18s blasted and coated black. As for scratches every once in awhile I will take them off, good cleaning, little polish and wax and they look fine. As for gloss, I would stay away from it, any imperfection will show unless they come out perfect. I think a satin/matte face with a real dark red lip would look pretty nice.

i was thinking the same thing about the Gloss black, i would never get them powdercoated gloss black, only matte or satin. the flaws would just stick out like crazy!

Thanks. Yeah I had drag bags with that setup. I no longer have those wheels. I now have CSL's.
I agree with the satin, gloss looks terrible in black IMO.

Thanks for all the input. A satin black will be what I go with. Still undecided on how much red, if any, to do.
I am not concerned about durability. I will let the shop I go to take care of prep too. This is all they do.

Good choice, just remember satin will shine a bit, it's not flat.
But IMO it looks better than gloss.

Hey Jeff, here's some pics of my TSW Mondello I had PC Satin Black. Turned out pretty nice, but I didn't baby them as they were my dedicated track tires and were always coated in brake dust!!! Currently have the chrome wheels (see sig), but I'm liking the look of Hyperblack/black chrome look on PBM now.
JMO but I just don't like the red stripe. Looks kinda cool on say a Z06 but well, the GTO doesn't have the lines of the Z06 to pull it off well IMO... Just my 2 cents of course ;)
