So I wanted to get my General Exclaims taken off the rear of my Goat and have my MT ET Streets put on. Unfortunately, the tire shop I go to closed at 5, which is when I get off work. So I reluctantly go over to NTB and explain what I want:

I want the Generals taken off my rear wheels
I want the Mickeys taken off the two wheels I just rolled in
I want the Mickeys then mounted on the rear wheels on my car.

So, the guy, after having to be corrected that I do not want a tire rotation asks with a bewildered look, "What size are the tires?"
"275/40/17."
He then draws back from the counter and says, "Forteeeee," as if the aspect ratio had some sort of significance. He breaks from his transcendental moment and asks, "What's the speed rating?"
"On what?"
"The tires you're putting on the car," he rolls his eyes like I had just asked the dumbest question in the world.
I look at him for a second, knowing that I had told him what was going on the car, and after a little pause, I lean forward and say, "They're draaaaaag radials."
He remains silent, and, without word, walks off to an office. I stand there wondering what the Hell he is doing. He comes back after ten minutes and looks at a chart posted on the counter, "Yeah, it'll cost you $83."
I choke back a laugh, "What?"
He re-affirms, "Mm-hmm. $83 for two tires."
I say, "You can go fock yourself for that price," then turn around and leave.

I was quoted over $90 at Discount for a similar service. Needless to say I'm still on my regular tires.

Yeah they charge an ass and a leg for mouting tires at those places (and the aspect ratio does make a difference). Better to take it to an independent shop and just pay the hourly rate.

yeah, cost me 35 bucks to have my valve stem replaced and the fix-a-flat cleaned out at Just Tires. The wheel was already off the damn car too.

The reason he accentuated the "Fortteeeeee" and the reason you were quoted an outrageous price is because they knew they had a pretty good chance of damaging your wheels due to the narrow sidewall of the tire. So they had to quote a price high enough to warrant a decent chance of having to foot a wheel repair bill and/or high enough to scare you off so they wouldn't even have to deal with it. So you were honestly better off not having them do it at all.

My shop hates when I bring in my cars with such 'skinny' tires. They'll do it, and they do it well. But it does take them significantly longer to do it, and they charge me the same price as anyone else, so they're making little, if any, money on the tire swap when I come in.

Jeff,go to El's tire on 40. They have a machine specifically for low pprofile wheel/tire combo's.

Yeah, that's where I'll be heading today.

Then I'll get to see how these Mickeys act on a 9" wheel. :turbonaug

I went to a local tire shop in Buffalo, NY and I had just bought a set of KDW2's and they wanted to charge me $200 for mounting and balancing.. The lady telling me the price says its becuase there low-pro tires, and it is hard to put them on.. Than she sat there and was like "o the guy that does it, today is his day off so we cant do it." I guess only 1 guy in the entire tire shop can do it.. I for one couldn't believe the price, and two couldn't believe only one guy could do it... I would NEVER pay that amount of money.. The next day I took them to work and had them do it for $40....

it is pretty easy to chunk a rim, or slice a bead on a tire when you don't know what you're doing. take it from someone who knows:bomb:

Folks, it's not as easy as a standard tire. Trust me, I tried. The Nitto DR's I had on my wheels were near impossible to get off with the standard tire machine at my dad's shop. The low profile sidewall and construction of these tires makes it near impossible to flip the lip of the tire onto the "duck bill." If some places say they can't or won't do it, don't write them off as being a shady shop that don't have a clue to what they're doing. These tires aren't your standard passenger tires.

That being said, brought my wheels and tires to be swapped out and balanced, $18/tire and I had to bring my old tires back with me. They did it without messing up the wheel at all ... I was impressed. I did see that they globbed a metric ass-ton of lubricant on there, might have been the trick ...

I find it extremely easy to do as long as you are patient. I haven't seen any that I couldn't put on yet. The hardest was a 25 aspect ratio on a 22" wheel, and it was about as hard as say... using a pencil. :)

MuhThugga if you lived close to me I would do it for you at the place I work at. I did my brothers cobalt ss/sc, he had 225/45/18 and put on exclaim uhp's the same size and it took 1-2 hours to remove, install and balance while taking my time to make sure I didn't mess up his wheels or tires. Will be putting 245/40/18 exclaim uhp's on my stock 18's in the next month. BTW low pros and runflats are a pita to remove and mount.

yeah i can agree low pro mounting (anything below a 45 series ) sucks most of the time. Try mounting a set of new corvette wheels and tires being a 295 30 19 with tire pressure sensors and runflat tires on top of that then the customer is watching like a hawk as you put almost 2000$ worth of rubber on there car and not scratch a wheel either. Trust me most of the time you pay what you get for its not a walk in the park to do these tires. paying 200$ is outragous also though. And alot of shops wont even touch a slick or any thing that says "drag radial" on the tire due to liability reasons. I guess having the machine in my shop so i dont have to ever pay for mounting and balancing is a real bonus!

The NTB by me has a sign right when you walk in that says 'We are not liable for damage to alloy wheels'. As soon as I saw that I turned around and walked out with a guy chasing me out the door asking if he can help me and why I'm leaving.

I've been doing my business with the local Firestone dealership. They said they can do the real big wheels with low pros so mine are no problem. They have put on two sets of tires for me and not a single scratch. I also have the lifetime warranty they do and both times the guy doing it has invited me in to see where it is and asked how I'd like it set up.

it is almost never the guy with the corvette or bmw that is over your shoulder. it is always the guy with the $200 beater. i had a guy come up to me with a flat he had loose off of his new lexus. 18" 35 series run flat with the new valvestem sensor. he owned the place i was doing a service call and wanted me to dismount it with a hammer and bars. i had to convince him to let me take it to the shop. i alway find it is the guy that is afraid you are going to knock some rust off his car that has to be standing right there. and for 2 tires mounted and balanced should not be much more than $50 imo

When i worked at a dealership the techs that always would mount and balance tires said the same thing... One guy will roll up in a IS-F and that guy could care less if you drove the car... And than a guy that rolls up in a 1994 Ford Escort rusted to the shit aand than gets rims for it will stand by the window nervously shaking, and always asking to watch..

I just take my car to the southside and have the chicanos do all 4 for $40. Good and fast like a mini mexican pit crew, they dont care the will mount, balance, and rotate 6 ft tractor tires.

P.S. Not racist, im half hispanic by the way.
