I have an old .22 Mag that my father gave me as my first gun, as well as an .17 HMR that is only about 2 years old. I'd like to transform one of them into a nail driver. I'd like to retain the stock barrels and bolt actions, but replace the stocks, scopes, triggers, and anything else that might keep it from being a badass. Can anyone lend any advice as to which one I should transform? I'm leaning towards the .22mag because it really needs the work done to it more than the .17. I also have a long history with the gun and would love to see it making the shots it did when I was younger. Any and all advice is appreciated. Once I figure out what I'm going to do I'll create a build thread to show the difference between current and modified.

.17HMR FTMFW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I didn't even read you post.
Shot it when I was in Az for the first time and more fun toying with that than anything else we brought.
there's also 17 remington fireball, which is what I'd love to build up

.17 HMR is the superior platform for accuracy, no brainer there.
.22 mag is slightly better for coyote sized critters, but that's basically it's ONLY advantage.
I would keep the sentimental gun that, sentimental. Once you tinker with it it'll be a totally different gun. Make the .17 the toy that it is now IMHO.

Gotcha. Thanks guys. I'll just do some extra maintenance on the 22mag and leave it the way it is. The 17HMR is much newer and should be easier to find aftermarket parts for.

Goodluck!

I like the 17 but prefer the 22 mag...now you get ammo that is 2200 fpt imv vs. the 2300 with the 17 (if I am not mistaken) but the 22 mag has a 10gr heavier bullet.
However the 22 being an older gun I would opt for the 17 :)

Well, it's really 1900ish Vs 2500ish. There are a pair of new .22 WMR loadings that are 2200 FPS, but then there are HMR loadings above 2600FPS too :).
