View Full Version : Driving on 4 studs

One of the studs on my rear wheels (ruff racing 278s) broke while I was driving, and I ordered new ones from gmpartshouse and also a new set of TSW wheels that I want to put on together. My question is: Can I drive my car to a show on the 4 remaining lugs? I don't know what caused them to break (don't know if the shaved offset had anything to do with it, they had hubcentric rings too) but I really want to bring my car to the OTB show

Why even risk it? There will be other shows.

you should be fine, i messed up a stud in the front and had to drive for 2 days until i could fix it.

I once drove 600 miles on two lugnuts in my Grand Prix. I didn't even realize it until I got to my destination. The car started shaking in about mid-Ohio and I got out, didn't see anything wrong so I kept going until I got home to Michigan. Pulled it in the garage, touched 3 lugnuts and they literally broke off in my hand.

The morale of the story is, I lived so just be careful and you should be okay. Is it a good idea? Probably not.

I wonder why it broke in the first place. I wouldn't drive on it not worth the risk.

I drove around without a lugnut once when the threads stripped out while putting it on (didn't cross-thread or overtorque it, the whole threads just came right out intact. Looked like a spring fell out of the lugnut). Had to drive it for a few days before I found a suitable replacement at Advance.

Another time a tire shop broke off a stud (and they were hand-tightening them with a torque wrench to spec!) and I had to drive it for a few days while the new one was on order.

No problems either time, just make sure your other lug nuts are still tight.

Go for it! I have seen NASCAR go fast with less lug nuts.

I just broke two on the same wheel while driving back from the beaches of North Carolina to Chattanooga, Tennessee. They were located side by side and the remaining three were loose. I tightened them down and proceeded carefully the last 200 miles home to find out that Auto Zone doesn't carry studs or nuts. Looking online for replacements.

missing one lug will not be a safety issue, AT ALL. seriously, think about how much of a load each lug (out of 5) is only holding.

not the optimum situation, but plenty safe

Hell, Mustangs only had 4 lugs for a long time...then again they are Fords and probably could have gotten away with only 3 if they were spaced evenly:turbonaug

The ARP-100-7708 fits the GTO rear.

The corvette also can take ARP-100-7708.

So I bet that corvette studs (which autozone carry) will fit the GTO rear.

autozone part number: 610-254.1

Actually I have some ARP-100-7708's sitting here. I measured
them and compared them to the autozone 610-254.1. I believe the
autozone studs will fit.
