Well, I've been wanting to do it for a while now and it sorta slipped out, but I just got done taking my pistol safety class. Now all I need to do is fill out the CCW form and wait like 4 months... then fill out the state form and wait another month... lol
Quick "noob" range report on the pistols I shot.
Granted I have a very limited frame of reference....so take it with a grain of salt.
Revolver portion: used a Smith & Wesson Model 656 4" barrel with the 7 shot cylinder & .38 cartridges. I was actually pretty impressed. Very solid pistol. And after like 10 shots I started getting fairly accurate at 25 feet, even while firing DA. Only took 21 shots total, but still a decent experience.
Semi-Auto portion: Another S&W, although I didn't catch which model (it said 615 on the slide). It was NOT an M&P. It was a 9mm, however. I was a little less impressed. Not sure how old the pistol was, but the trigger pull in DA was a little vague and when taking follow-up shots, the SA seemed unpredictable and "lumpy". The slide was smooth and tight, so it may have been pretty new and not broken in. Only got 9 shots out of it...
They "suckered" me in (not really) to buying a starter membership... $50 got me 10 free rentals of whatever they have (which is a pretty damn good selection), 5 hours range time and an hour private lesson.
Not bad, all in all.
Edit: starter membership also included a 10% discount for follow-up classes, which I may take advantage of.... they will be offering the Utah CCW permit class in about a month. That will allow me to carry in like 32 states.
