Well I have never shot a Pistol/Rifle match before this morning. All I can say is wow. Never realized how tough it would actually be. Shooting small metal targets with my pistol from 25 yards. Need some more practice with that. I used my DPMS AR15 for the rifle section at 50 yards. That wasn't bad at all. 25 mph winds though. I should find out what I placed tonight although from the others I saw shooting I will not be at the top of the list.

50 yards is a start. Next take your AR and try a DCM course at 200, 300 and 600 yards.
Standing, 200 yds., slow-fire (10 shots in 10 minutes)
Sitting or kneeling, 200 yds., rapid-fire (10 shots in 60 seconds)
Prone, 300 yds., rapid-fire (10 shots in 70 seconds)
Prone, slow-fire, (20 shots in 20 minutes)
For the NRA RMC, the first three stages are doubled. For the CMP President's Match, the sitting stage is omitted and the 600 yard stage is only 10 shots.
a rattle battle is even more fun.....
A Trophy team is composed of six shooters, a captain and a coach.
The ammunition is limited to 384 rounds per team.
Firing starts at the 600 yard line.
On the command "Captains move your team to the firing line", the team is moved to position.
The army "E" target is used and the position is prone. Slings, coats and gloves may be used, no mats.
The coach lays back for a last look at the wind conditions through a spotting scope.
The coach gives the final wind correction.
On the command "Load and be ready." The team loads, safetys off and waits for the targets to appear.
Sometime after 10 seconds, but no later than 40 seconds the targets are exposed and remain so for 50 seconds.
Each team engages eight targets. This means some shooters must engage more than one target.
During firing the coach and captain watch with binoculars the effect of fire, command sight corrections and otherwise aid the shooters.
After the 50 seconds the targets are pulled down, guns made safe and targets are scored.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A hole in or touching the black is a hit. Everything else is a miss.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Each hit at 600 counts for 4 points.
Targets receiving six or more hits are "squared". This applies to each yard line.
The number of squared targets is multiplied by itself (squared) and this number is the bonus points added to the score.
Example: eight targets squared = 8x8 = 64 bonus points.
After the targets are repaired, the teams move, line abreast, to the 500 yard line.
Once again the army "E" targets are engaged from the prone position. At 500 yards each hit is worth 3 points.
After scoring the teams are moved to the 300 yard line.
During the move the coach and captain may re-distribute ammunition.
At 300 yards the army "F" target is engaged from the sitting position. At 300 yards each hit is worth 2 points.
At 200 yards the "F" target is again engaged, but this time from the standing position. Each hit is worth 1 point.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Generally, the shooters are divided into two fire teams of three each.
The captain and the coach each take one fire team.
The shooters on the extreme left and right cover two targets each and are called swing shooters.
The four shooters in the center hammer one target each.
The ammunition allotment of 384 rounds comes from the days of the M1 rifle.
The amount of ammo that came in a can was 48 8-round clips, or 384 rounds.
Now a days, the M1 isn't competitive in this event. It has been displaced by magazine rifles and the AR-15 dominates.
It is unusual for a team to have any ammunition left for 200 yards.
It is common practice to save enough ammo to square all the targets at 300 yards.

What size targets do you shoot at 600 yards? The ones we were shooting were maybe 10-12"s tall. Some even smaller.

the MR-1 is 60" across and a 36" black. From 600 yards, it is about the size of your front sight pin.

If you are into pistol shooting USPSA matches are the best. I shoot a ton of USPSA matches and it is a great time every match.
