yup, you read right.....i don't know what is wrong with me, i woke up this morning wanting an sks.....so i proceeded to get in the gto and drive to the gun store. They had a few yugo's and one chinese norinco...i held them both and the yugo is a tad bit heavier but feels much more solid. The chinese gun just felt cheap and not as well made. Also the yugo gun had a cool looking muzzle break and a bad ass bayonet. Soooooooo.......i bought it:bomb:
I have a problem.....i can't stop buying guns, what should i do? I can't afford to keep doing this....i may already be in over my head.
Anyways i am very excited, and will post pics after i pick it up. There is just one problem, the gun is new and is completely covered in cosmoline....i mean COMPLETELY! So if anyone could tell me the best way to get rid of it that would be great, i bought a heat gun today cause i thought that maybe heating it up would get it to melt off easier? I am just nervous about taking the gun all the way apart to do all this, i hope i can do it.
Anyone else addicted to guns? I'm thinking about starting a support group.

Here's an interesting article on removing cosmoline from milsurp rifles:

Looks like a ton of fun (NOT). Good luck with that!

That stuff is a PITA. I hate taking it off weapons. Have fun!
taking it apart is no big deal at all...

Gunscrubber is a good product to clean the cosmoline off

Make sure to tear apart the bolt. There may be hardened cosmo in the firing pin channel which can cause a slamfire at worst (REALLY dangerous, you don't want it going full auto, especially if you don't have a firm grip on it if it happens!) or the damn thing just won't shoot.

Heat and lots of it brother. You can boil most of the small metal parts, leaving the stock out in the sun and wiping it down occasionally will work well for the stock.

Yep, its official. You are now addicted to gun-crack. There is no cure for it so just embrace it and buy a big ass gun safe, you will need it. If you don't have the 10,000sqft ammo shed built in the back yet, start the planning. That will be a parallel obsession, trust me I am a victim myself.
I have been told that if you break down the rifle and place it in the dish washer on the hot cycle for a few runs it will get a great deal of cosmoline out. Use a good degreasing automatic dishwasher soap and the hottest temp you can get.

Your yugo "brake" may be the grenade launcher attach
Your yugo "brake" may be the grenade launcher attach
Yes can't say for sure without seeing it but I would say this is 99.99% correct

Exactly... Look for the flip up front sights and the gas disable lever. With the gas disable you can actually use the weapon as a bolt action rifle.:)

That article was insane. Just drop the SKS in a container of diesel fuel for a couple of days. Take it out and let the diesel evaporate. It's not like you're cleaning a presentation grade M1 or something.
