From Wikipedia: The .577 Tyrannosaur or .577 T-rex is a cartridge developed by A-Square in 1993 for the hunting of large game in Africa. The .577 contains a .585-inch (14.9 mm) diameter 750-grain (49 g) Monolithic Solid Projectile which when fired moves at 2,460 ft/s (750 m/s) producing 10,180 foot-pounds force (13,800 J) of energy.[1] The production model from A-square is based on their Hannibal rifle platform

What would you use this round for?

Charging elephant, charging lion, charging hippo in Africa. Probably quite effective on charging coastal Alaskan brown bear too. Charging water buffalo, charging bison. Monster alligator and crocodile. Anything real big you want to put down real quick from close range.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow...

Wow. Empty brass, no primer, no bullet no powder included, $11.69 each when you buy a ten pack.

Considering your STD.30-06 load has a 20ftlb recoil and the .577 T-Rex is well over 100ftlbs (110 I think), that rifle is gonna KICK!!!!

I saw a video where one really large muscular dude managed to hang on to that gun. They asked him if he wanted to take another shot, he declined of course.

+1 As long as you know what you're doing, which most people do not when they shoot firearms......

What would you use this round for?

You answered your own question. Its used for large african game.

It would have to be for Elephant, Rhino, Waterbuffalo, Hippo, etc. Very big game and game with thick hide.

You could definatly use it to stop smaller animals charging at you like a lion, lepoard, etc. But you would not want to go hunting them with it. It would blow a hole on the other side of the animal the size of your head or bigger. That round is way to big to hunt thin hide game like lions.

:iagree: It was mostly for elephants, it is illegal in all 50 states and I believe Canada also to hunt any game with a caliber that large. Pointless to me but I gatta admit if I had the chance to pick one up cheap I would.

I think it's been answered- 577T-Rex in the hands of a bunch of incompetents. there is a wikipedia page on the caliber, and there are reloading manuals for it (sierra bullets, I think?).

I don't know if the cartridge is outlawed here or not. Any 'commercial' cartridge over 0.500" is considered a destructive device by the BATF. However, calibers over this limit can be applied for a special exemption related to sporting purposes. there are some links to various ATF sites that describe the process. since it is only for dangerous african game, it is likely it does not carry the exemption (but it could, though- not sure).

other calibers have similar ballistics to the TRex. there are a bunch of them out there. any of the larger nitro express cartridges are similar- 600NE as an example.

someone might bring up the 50BMG- it is legal and under the 0.500" limit for destructive device limit because of how the BATF measures caliber- between the barrel grooves at the smallest point=0.4995".
