I have many firearms, but I always go back to my love for sixguns and pistols that pack easy on the belt and get the job done. Guys like Elmer Keith, John Taffin, Paco Kelly, and others are my shooting influences.

Some of my current favs, all with 4 5/8" barrels (and some with 7 1/2"):

- Colt SAA, especially in 45LC or 44Spl.
- Ruger Blackhawks in .357, .44spl, and 45LC
- Ruger Single-six in 22lr/22mag
- S&W N frame with a 4" barrel
- Ruger Mark 22lr w/ a 4" barrel

I love the guns and leather that allow you make these firearms a working part of an outdoor life.

Anyone else appreciate a good packin' pistol on an outdoor adventure?

Please share...

I don't leave the city limits of Fairbanks, AK without a .500 Smith and Wesson, either the 4" S&W on a waist belt or the 7.5" BFR in a shoulder holster. My day pack handles the 4" Smith easily in the built in holster.

If I am staying in town or travelling to the lower 48 I prefer .45 Long Colt in 4-7" barrels. There are a few grizzlies in elk country big enough that I don't see much use carrying anything smaller. 250 odd grains of 45LC over 40 grains of black powder is balistically real real similar to 44magnum, doesn't kick [me, YMMV] as hard. Carries real nice too, esp compared to the cannons.

PS: If you know of a mould for a Keith style bullet at 0.452 to 0.454" that comes in at 250-260 grains please hook a brother up.

Thx,

I am not even an hour away from S&W in Springfield Ma. I have been there once when passing through town but on a rainy saturday, I want to go make a day out of it. They have many items there to demo and when I make it up there, I'm sure I'll get something. Could be a M&P, 1911 or a 38 revolver. I am excited about it.
