Bought this old timer at an auction saturday. It is in shootable condition but a gunsmith really needs to look at it in order for it to be 100% safe. Only issue is that the receiver does not lock back once the magazine is empty.
80% of the serial numbers match and the only items not original to the gun in 1936 are the magazine and the wood grips. The wood grips are from a later version of the luger. The 1936 had hay colored wood rather than a dark stain like these.
It looks like someone was about to try and blue the gun being as the barrel is stripped. it is not really a collector's item but for a 73 year old German Luger that still functions, it kicks ass.

Hard to see but it has the military acceptance stamps on it as well. So this was a service pistol of some type.

Date and factory stamp. 1936, made by the Mauser factory in Oberdorf.

$675. A steal considering it is fully functional. Well, except for the receiver not locking back. Most parts only lugers sometimes go for that much. Ive seen functioning ones cobbled together from mismatched parts go for as much as $950.

As far as the action not locking open on an empty mag some of the aftermarket mags dont have the small notch to catch and hold it open. Also some of the real old mags are aluminum and the notch is just worn away. I have my grandfathers old ww2 era luger and ran in to both of those problems

After breaking down the weapon to have a look, it seems like the actual lever mechanism the magazine presses against to hold the receiver open is missing. Even so, I think you are right about the aftermarket magazine. It does not seem to have anything that would press on the nonexistent lever anyway. It is just a minor annoyance at the moment. Other than that and some jackass only starting to blue half of it, the weapon fires smoothly for being 73 years old. I hope I work half as well when I am that age.

I was at a great store in houston thursday - Collectors Firearms. I checked these out, and what a spread. Low price was $249(prolly a knock-off) Highest price was $5,200, figure some doccumented history there.. There were a LOT in the $600 - $800 range.
They had about 20 of them, and about the same number of broom handles as well.

The old German is still fairly accurate after all these years. Went to the range today since a friend of mine wanted to see and shoot the gun and did not believe a 73 year old pistol could be accurate. After forty rounds at seven yards and ten rounds at 25 yards, he is now a believer.
Standing, one shot every 2-3 seconds.

I am more accurate at 25 yards with the luger than I am with my Glock 17. So I guess I'll be using the luger for the 25 yard zombie head shots and the zombie mag in the glock for the close in zombie defense.

If all the numbers match, that sounds like a hell of a deal. Especially if it still fires.
