Hey gang.
The SinCityGoats have once again been tasked with providing a cruise route. This year we plan to stay out of state parks so that the more exuberant drivers among us will not get us a park ranger escort again.
I wanted to start a thread to get some input from you guys on what kind of route you would like to see.
Last years cruise was a great success (even tho we did get escorted out of Valley of Fire).
Questions:
Scenery or Route? Do you want to see some awesome sights or awesome corners? Long straights for speed?
How far are you guys willing to drive? Do we want to keep it local or would a death valley cruise be an option?
Start time? Last years start time was pretty good for everyone involved. For cruising earlier is better, but how many will we lose to nursing hangovers?
Any and all input will be appreciated. I want to have at least as much fun as we did last year. I have a little bit more time to plan this one, so I am hoping for more fun!

Last years cruise was a great success (even tho we did get escorted out of Valley of Fire).
Questions:
Scenery or Route? Both would be ideal. For most of us that did last year, the VoF had some awesome sites and roads. On one hand, I wished we took it easier in order to appreciate the sites. But the roads were so smooth, it was impossible not to get caught in the fury of aggressive driving. I think we need to avoid this. Our group will attract attention every where we go. We actually skated away pretty good last year; I caution our luck. Don't get me wrong though, tough to not open it up and have fun.
Do you want to see some awesome sights or awesome corners? sites would be safer; corners would be more fun....hmmm, I chose "d" "all of the above"
Long straights for speed?
Sounds like fun
How far are you guys willing to drive? From NorCal so whatever, just like to drive.
Do we want to keep it local or would a death valley cruise be an option? Ok on either

Last year was perfect. Hangovers just come with the territory of those who choose that route. I bet everyone that couldn't make it last year, regrets missing it. Especially because of the HO and of course the cool pics and vids of V of F!
Just my :cents:

Thanks for helping out with this Dago.
We have 3 hours set aside for this on Sunday from 11-2. We can go earlier, but it was pretty unanimous last year that pushing it to 11 would give everyone more time to party and hang out. That was the majority of feedback I received...
Interested to hear everyone's thoughts. Especially those who went on the cruise last year.

11 is pretty late. We will have a much worse traffic problem than we did last year due to location. Once again... earlier is better. Otherwise we run serious risk of losing goats along the route.

SpeedyVic and I took a great "cruising" 2 lane highway out of Vegas last year. All I know is that we were heading south. We talked about how awesome it would be to do the cruise on that stretch of road. It has awesome scenery and it is definitlely a "drivers" road. My .02

I believe you are talking about US95 South. Driven that route many times. It will take you through a few small NV towns then you can head towards Laughlin/Bullhead City. There are some awesome straights on that road, but no curves at all!

I didn't notice any towns until I-10 and I think by then we would be ready to turn around. But ya, there aren't many curves but it has some fun little hills to go over and I got up to 110 without flying over them, lol.

Heh... I have been a lot faster than 110 on that road. Actually, IIRC I hit my highest speed ever on that road.
Still, there are no sights and no corners.

Last years cruise was amazing! it was all kinda a blur but I enjoyed it very much. It sucked getting asked to leave but the route was perfect nice roads, great views and very few other poeple on the road with us. So even with spirited driving it was rather safe and being on the res kinda free of actual police. Only downside really was not being able to stop and take photos like we wanted.

Yeah I remember your 110 flybye Eddie. And yes the route Eddie is talking about is Hwy 95 south to the 40 across to Needles and down to Blythe. It is a fun 3 hr 220 mile drive that Eddie and I managed to make in 2 1/2 hrs (record still stands to this day out of about the 20 times I've driven that route) but not very scenic, just a whole lot of desert. There are quite a few curves, hills and nice passing zones where I've hit 130 in both the GTO and my wifes G8 but I wouldn't nominate this route for the cruise. It was fun driving it with one other goat but not with 50-60 like we had at the VoF cruise last year. Especially with the construction going on from the Laughlin turnoff to Searchlight, it's 45-55 mph construction zone with one lane each way and no passing allowed.
I'm up for any thing that lets the goat stretch it's legs with some turns thrown in. I don't know if the Rangers will remember us from last year but the VoF would be fun to do again as long as no one does any burn outs or fish tailing, that's what got us in trouble said the Ranger that I talked to when I was trying to get Abo out of the wrong way ticket. He said people had called in "reckless drivers" that were in our group :bomb:

It's nothing but a straight shot from Vegas to the Laughlin turnoff but after the turnoff it gets real fun with several curves that can be taken at alot higher speed than the road signs recommend along with the hills and dips that Eddie is talking about. And once you pass Needles there are more S curves, long sweepers, dips and elevation changes. Not to mention having to pass 1-4 cars or semis at a time and routinely hitting 100+ when doing so. I've been to Vegas about 20 times in the last 2 years and look forward to driving that stretch each time.

Given that I am driving about 900 miles to Vegas from the Colorado/Kansas border, what is another several hours of driving for a cruise. Death Valley is always a great place. Hardly any cops out there and you can get into some great twisties. I wonder if we could start out going to Mt. Charleston and then head to Death Valley or somewhere fun with some twisties? I am up for 9:30 a.m. for sure. 11:00 a.m. is too late. We will not be able to do hardly anything if we leave much past 10:00 a.m. Just a thought.

Would it be a good idea to carry some walkie talkies with us to keep constant communication with the group?

Yes, bring them! I've got a pair I bring with me. We need to find out a clear channel we can all sync up to. There should be someone in the front, middle and rear of the pack to warn of possible upcoming situations.
Anybody else have a set they'd like to bring? Any suggestions on channels out there?

Agree. 9:30 is a good time. Just enough time to get some starbucks and hit the road. I would like the best of all worlds...nice straight aways, tight corners, beautiful drive...
Either way its just a blast to be able to cruise with a bunch of goats anywhere. IMO

One of the SCG crew came up with a great idea. Thanks robisoda!!
I have a cruise route in mind that would include two very nice scenic destinations. We could have the hardcore crew leave at 8:30-9am for the first portion of the cruise, then meet up with the late risers at a midway point around 11 for the second half of the cruise.
Seems to me that this would accommodate all those involved.

Sounds good! Do we have a dedicated member that is willing to guide the "late risers" from the Hotel Parking lot to the midway point?

SCG is scouting the route this weekend.
It looks like we will be able to please most. There will be a lovely scenic cruise for the early risers. The less responsible crowd can sleep in. Then there will be a separate meetup for the drunkards at around 11 for a slightly longer cruise with some possibilities for higher speeds.
I am trying to include some more time for photo ops and hanging out. Although the GR staff has set and end time of 2pm for this cruise I say let it go on for as long as we want. The endpoint of the cruise has plenty of stuff to do. So if you want to grab lunch, or go on a hike, or just take pictures... it is all up to you. Finding the way back to the hotel is easy.
MAKE SURE YOU FILL YOUR TANK THE NIGHT BEFORE! There is a chevron right next to the Palace Station. If you don't have gas we aren't going to wait for you. I warned you all last year, and I still had more than 5 people ask if we could stop for gas. I am telling you now, the answer is NO!

Good news! Route is finalized.
This year I have decided to break the cruise up into 2 groups. Although, you all have the option to be in both.
Group 1: Is primarily made up of those that want a nice mellow scenic cruise in the crisp, cool, morning air. The burnout, streetrace, getuskickedoutofVoF crowd should stay in and get some extra sleep.
Group 2: Is for the drunkards who can't handle their booze, the night owls, the no holds barred crowd, and all of you that whined like little girls about the use fees. There will be lots of open highway. Some straights, some turns and guaranteed fun.
Group 1: Will leave Palace Station at 9:30am for the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop. We will do the 13 mile loop with time to stop for photos/chatting/etc. This is not the place to be doing burnouts and acting like an asshat. We will be sharing the loop with families, bikers, tourists and cyclists. Remember to share the road. You will get no sympathy from me when a cyclist puts a U-lock through your window for doing something stupid. Make sure to bring $5 for the fee. The cruise will end at the roof of the West Parking Garage at Red Rock Casino. Where we will be meeting group 2.
Map: http://tinyurl.com/GR09G1
Group 2: Will leave Palace Station by 11am (led by 1hotgoat) for Red Rock Casino (Roof of West Parking Garage). Group 1 will join Group 2 on the roof. We will be leaving Red Rock Casino at 11:30 for Mt. Charleston. This route includes lots of open highway, looooooong straights, some good curves and is more "friendly" to the type of driving I know many of you would like to partake in. Again... there are civilians on this road including cyclists, so be safe and remember to share the road. The end point will be the Ski Resort at Mt. Charleston. There are some great photo stops on this route as well. We will be taking time at the Ski area to hang out, so bring a snack or picnic lunch. We can leave the ski lodge (whenever) run through Kyle Canyon and back to Palace Station
Map: http://tinyurl.com/GR09G2
Make sure to have gas in your tank. SCG ran this route yesterday. Most of us used almost 3/4 tank. Also, be sure to pack plenty of water.
There will be plenty of awesome photo ops along both routes.

I used less than a 1/2 tank for both the cruises, but I kinda drive like an ol' lady, so I'd estimate burning a good 8-9 gallons of fuel for most GTOs. 140 mile total cruise!
