I drove the bird into work this week because it was a day when it wasn't gonna rain. WRONG. Half way in I hit a pop up shower. I'm cruising along about 60mph when the back end hydroplanes and goes sideways on me. That really sucked. I've never had problems on wet roads with the tires up until this week. I think it's because I'm getting some miles on them ~6k. I'll definitely be checking radar before I leave home from now on. I came within an inch of losing it completely. I'm just thankful there were no cars in the lane next to me or we would've all been having a bad day.

Are these the DR's or the 555's ???
I am getting toyo T-1R's for my new rims, mostly because I know they will fit.

I hydroplaned in my gtp yesterday on the way up to The Great Wolf Lodge where i was going to stay for a couple nights. I was on the highway and hit a huge puddle, it pulled me right into the right lane where there was a car. Missed the car just barely before i could pull back. I got lucky :eek2:

Great Wolf Lodge ehhh. They just built one here in VA. Went there in the winter time and had a blast. Little pricey unless you split it with family.
Nitto's dont hydroplane, even the drag radials. i have had some problem with the BFG DR's hydroplaning, but never with the nitto's....weird.

:bs: Any tire can hydroplane, it is function of how deep the water is, how fast you are going, and the efficiency of the tread on the at removing the water between the tire and the road.
The best rain tire made is going to hydroplane if you drive, for example, at 150 into a couple inches of water.
Nitto's may be the best DR for the wet, but they are going to suck compared to a All-Season tire, and only get worse as they wear, just like any other tire.

I drive in heavy raing atleast twice a week in FL and havent had any iussues yet. Maybe you just hit a bad spot. Any tire could have caused you to hydroplane

I would still like to know if they were the DR's or regular 555's.

Drag radials. Awesome tire and plan on another set when these are used up. First instance of me having issues in the rain. I know other people have run into problems with rain once they get some miles on the tires.

I run Nitto drag radials. Drove down to Gainesville Raceway in the rain yesterday, no problems. But I probably have less than 1k miles on them. I still take it easy when its wet. Well, I try to take it easy. :D

I hydroplaned my Nitto DRs when they only had 500 miles on them. I was able to gain control easily, which says alot for the tire. The puddle had a few inches of water in it.

Amen, I like you guys and would never want to sound argumentive. Anyone that says it can't happen is seriously uninformed. I had to nearly die to find out it could, even with an all weather tire on an unmodded vehicle. If you are on wet road using cruise control, if you are going over 55-60 MPH, if there is wind, if there is traffic, if you just run out of luck it will happen. The guys here telling stories about how they recovered are the luckiest of all. Ask some members of the forum that are law enforcement officers. When those suckers come loose the only determining factor that means anything is the momentum of the car. If you are slightly out of line, headed out of your lane or in any way out of trim aero dynamically, well look at Padre's thread.
I wasn't as lucky as he was, I slowed rapidly from 60 to about 15 turning lazy circles and the rear end of the car hit the guardrail. I remember think of chit I bent this rental car but being glad it was a Ford. Then the car bounced straight off the guardrail diagonally accross the traffic, by then I had tried everything to stop it. I looked to my left and saw a semi coming hard. I remember thinking "thy will be done". The first impact was my right front just behind his cab. That cut the front end of the car off and spun me clockwise where the rear tires of the cab cut the back off even with the back seat and accelerated the spin. I think I remember seeing the bottom of the trailer as I went under it and I looked and saw the rear wheels coming at me. That might be my imagination since I must have been out from the airbag detonation.
Fortunately something in the undercarriage of the trailer ejected the car from beneath it. BTW these were witness recounts. I was out when the initial impact set off the air bags. I came to looking up through the front windshield, then realized there was none. I remember seeing someone running down the side of the road towards me and trying to open the door and it wouldn't open. I thought I might be dead and just seeing this, unable to actually move or do anything but I hit the door lock and all four locks popped up. The battery was still hanging by its cable to the car.
Sorry for the soap box, let me say that chit hurts when it happens though. PS it was a brand new car with less than 3k miles, tires were factory new all weather. Oh yeah, you don't regain control, the hydroplaning just stops and then you have control given back to you. perhaps the factor in those of you getting control back was that only two of your four tires broke loose.

The biggest factor is tread depth. Pretty much any new tire with plenty of tread will feel safe on the freeway in rain.
Any old tire with wear will feel unsafe.

More than a stain, I assure you. Someone said anything you walk away from is okay. Geesh I am doing a lot of morbid posts lately.

Sounds like you were really lucky. Glad to hear you came out of it ok. I've really only had one major wreck and a couple of fender benders. I rolled a truck about 6 years ago. Just got a broke nose, cracked ribs, and minor scratches. I wasn't wearing a belt but was only doing maybe 35-40. I also had my dog in the truck with me. He came out of it fine but no longer likes to go for a ride .:D The only thing I really remember was how loud it was. That's the loudest thing I've ever heard in my life.
