View Full Version : To ANYONE contimplating custom wheels...

Alright guys, if you havent got past the denial stage yet.... DO IT NOW. Huge wheel selection for the GTO simply isnt happening yet. Why???? Because no one knew that GM would throw a curveball and set out a whole new bolt pattern.
The few wheels available were made for BMWs, period. Luckily some of them fit and look good, Beyern. Too bad supply/demand isnt working in your favor.
I have the connections, and the desire to build whatever the masses want. Ive been working with Chris Coddington for years and years. Designed a few wheels, and bought a lot more. As with any custom wheel...its obviously cheaper to buy in quantities. And when I save, you save.
His current line up can be seen at www.billetwheel.com These can all be modified slightly to fit your style. For example, you can take off, or add on the appearance dimples on the 2 piece forged wheels. You can have the wheels in a variety of finishes such as: custom painted, painted to match your cars color code, full polished, satin silver brushed with polished lip, and so on.
OR!!!!! We can go ahead and start a whole new design that everyone agrees on, and go with that. Thats what I did recently with a very simple clean 5 spoke youve seen on here.
So, if you are serious about this, and not just window shopping...please post in this thread and we'll get something going. The more, the better....this could be very good for everyone. You'll be seeing quite a few custom Boyds coming out on here in the next few weeks. A lot of you have already started placing orders.
My wheels, my offsets...there is no rubbing. There is not cutting or rolling of the lips. 275s out back all day long with no worries. I did my homework long ago. even lowered, you dont have any worries. And of course, the wheels will come hubcentric to the gto.

I do have a serious question as relates to the offsets and fender cutting/rolling. You say you can get a 275 on there no problem at all without any mods to the car. What if someone such as myself is willing to do fender rolling or cutting? Can you design a 10" wheel that'll fit in that sort of circumstance with like a 295 or 305 tire?

Nice wheels. Are these in the $400-500 range or are they about $700 each?
I like your design better then the ones in his gallery. The wheel I really like the looks of is the new style Cragar SS wheel, but unfortunately it doesn't come the right size for our cars.

Is there room underneath, with the proper back-spacing, to go larger than 275's i n the back without rolling the fenders? It sure looks like there might be 1-2 more inches under there. Anybody know?

I think an idea of what pricing might be depending on the number of buyers would help people reply to the thread with a better answer. Because I I know that I want those PD1 wheels eventually.

Me personally, I run 285s out back with no rubbing. So yes, theres more room. But...you start running out of options. You want to keep tire height front and rear almost identical. Otherwise the abs and traction control get mad at ya. I think a 295-35 would throw it off, although I do believe I can get a 9.5 wheel and a 295 under the car.
His 2 piece forged line in 18" runs 2456 + shipping from him.
From ME, around $2100 for the set.
If WE do a bigger buy, 4-5 of the same set of wheels at once, I can easily get it under $2000 for the set.
All of this, and the wheels weigh less than the factory stuff!

I really like those wheels and i think they would look killer on my YJ car, but anything over $1000 a set is probably going to be out of my price range. I know you get what you pay for I think the wife would have a cow if I paid more than that for a set of rims. Since I don't have any room for a cow, I guess I'm out.
Those really are awsome rims though.

That black wheel in chrome, 18", fit under front and rear fenders without any modifications for a reasonable price and I would be interested. I wouldn't want the jazz around the outside of the wheel, though. Clean, simple, 5 spoke chrome with a deep dish.
Since Beyern's seem to be outta the picture.

However, what size are we talking about? I would want 18's. Second questions what do they weigh compared to the stock wheel?

Here is my wheel idea:
http://franklin.imgen.bcm.tmc.edu/~joe/wheel-idea.jpg
Don't be too hard on me. I'm no pro, so I spent a longass time making this.
The basic idea is a 70's-ish corvette wheel, black enamel with a polished lip. Obviously the centercaps would have the arrow instead.
Clearly the original wheel's offset is pretty far from useful for a GTO, but if a new-from-scratch wheel could be made, how much of the old style could be retained?
I think it looks very "muscle car". I hope I don't get made fun of too much for this :secret:

After seeing how big of a dick Boyd is on TV I wouldn't give him one cent.
Anyways, Todd, can you get a good price on CCW wheels?
He already said he can't get great deals on CCW.
And I am not a fan of Boyd himslef, but the guys working there know there stuff, and they do make some of the most badass wheels available!

Its also a TV show. Look at American Choppers. Are you telling me that if you wanted a custom bike you wouldnt buy one from there because the father always seems like an ass. Like I said, its a TV show and you only see half of the story.

Boyd does make some nice wheels I just wish I would've known how hard it is to keep polished aluminum clean. I had the BC Smoothie IIs on my T/A and they were stained within the first week from water dripping off the top of the rim and settling in the bottom lip. It's a must to keep wax on them or they will ruin easily.

I dont mean to be rude, but I have a real problem purchasing anything from Coddington. His prices are insulting.

Would having the wheels clearcoated solve that problem?

I would like Anthracite Axis Hiro wheels that don't have "AXIS" stamped on a spoke, and would be available in 19X9.5 in the rear with the correct offset.

When you say we all have to decide on a single wheel, does that mean we all have to get the same size? I am interested in the F-22's if we can get 19X8 up front and the 19X10 rear. I am not interested in 18's.
AZ Power and Sound
08-01-2005, 09:32 AM
jason, you can do 19s...but it'll have to be an 8.5 or 9" rear. not 10
jasonblair
08-01-2005, 10:01 AM
Do they make a 9" rear? From their site, I thought they only had 8.5" and 10"... 9" or 9.5" would be fine... if they make it

I would like the F-22 in 18's and black with a lip if we are still talking about prices in the $2000 ball park. Are we still talking about 8.5 fronts and 9.5 rears? I am currently looking at tires.
Thanks again

Hey Todd at ProDyno. I own a 2005 GTO and you seem to be the only guy that knows that 275-285's fit on the rear of the GTO. I like hearing that. I want to kill to birds with one stone here. Can you help me out here. So I can place 19's in the rear with a rim width of no more than 9.5? You have this offset all worked out. There has to be more room to the back of the fender. Who the hell wants the rim sticking out right? hahahah. Beyerns after looking at them for a while jsut lack something and people keep saying there a BMW wheels. Thinking of an HRE 540R five spoke but they are pricy. Looking to spend no more than around 2K for rims. Need money for the meets and A LS2 supercharger when it comes out. So you guys selling any nice 5 spoke designs similar to the Boyd Coddingtons. Those 5 soke ones on the red GTO look pretty tempting. Hey give me some prices on a combo that will fit. I want to make a purchase this week so I am all ears. You guarantee a fit on a non lowered car? If so my gain is your gain. To all other readers get some more pics of rims THAT FIT on here for the goat. :-patriot:

Just spoke wioth Todd at pro dyno and gotta love the price of those F22's by Boyd Coddington. Anybody think they have a better wheel for the price I am all ears. I was looking at HRE's 545R's but those are $4,000 dollars. He guarentees a fit for the Boyd Coddingtons w/ 52mm offset in 18x9 rim. So put that in your books guys. Give me some feedback guys!!!!

THey gotta be good wheels since they are going on the new ZO6 too. hehe. Hey Junior u selling too? Let me now.

Bigger is better :gr_devil: The biggest difference is that you will have the centers painted which will change the looks of the wheel a little. Ill probably be the last one to get them on since I am going away to school.
