Question # 9 Closed 10:03 AM 10/07/09

Two for Tuesday!

Points for each question, bonus points if you get them both.

1st Correct answer 5 points each question, 2nd correct answer 3 points each question, 3rd corrrect answer 2 points each question. 1 point each question for correct answers. Bonus point is the amount of the highest scoring correct answer if you get two correct but no less than 2 points. So if you are first in with both, 5 points + 5points + 5 bonus = 15 points. If you are second in with one and 4th in with the next, 3 points + 1 point + 3 bonus = 7 points. Yay!!! If you are 13th in with both, 1 point + 1 point + 2 bonus = 4 points...

Answers can be sent in the same PM or two PM's it is up to you.

Question #1

During a recent police investigation, The chief inspector was interviewing five local villains to try and identify who stole Mrs Archer's cake from the mid-summers fair.
Below is a summary of their statements:

Arnold: it wasn't Edward
it was Brian

Brian: it wasn't Charlie
it wasn't Edward

Charlie: it was Edward
it wasn't Arnold

Derek: it was Charlie
it was Brian

Edward: it was Derek
it wasn't Arnold

It was well known that each suspect told exactly one lie.
Can you determine who stole the cake?

Question # 9 Closed 10/07/09

Yes, Charley stole the Cake

Question #2

Those that understand what i am talking about can resubmit the 'complete' answer. These will only count if your answer was 'correct' but incomplete. This will affect your place in line.

Well time to go home. Worked long enough.

Surprisingly few people have both questions correct. Many because of the way they have stated the answer to one of the questions. I picked these two because they use slightly different skill sets so what would be simple for some will be difficult to others or vice versa. The only further help I'll give is one word 'syntax'. You got to have it right or it is meaningless.

VeritasGT

What f'ing syntax?

So and so stole the cake, and there are x square units of paper left!

Edited : any questions updated with the 'corrected answer after 8:16 EST this morning are not valid corrections because VGT posted the answer, or rather the missing syntax. VGT will loose 4 points regardless.

so well , I understand what VGT did there.. maybe unknowingly..but,

are you saying that since your question was
Can you determine who stole the cake? that means we had to answer it as
Yes, ____ stole it.. or ____ stole it..

Yes. With out specifically pointing out that your math expression needed to be correct, I couldn't give any other hint. Syntax fits well. As far back as 22 years ago I was docked for 'improper syntax' on math tests because I used the wrong expression or didn't' bother to specify 'sq' on an area equation. Many people answered that question correctly, many did not. simply saying '4' is not correct. 4 what? 4 units is a line. or if arranged properly, 4 sides of 1 sq unit

But the main point is, do not give hints or answers to the questions.

Not important to people who are not named Charlie or Charley or Charly. It is clearly a spelling correction... :)

Mathematical syntax refers to the construction of an equation (ie, the order of numbers and more specifically, the placement of signifiers such as +, -, X, / and parentheses. Not whether or not the unit is corrrect).

4 is a wrong answer, but not because 'syntax'.

Q1
Arnold: it wasn't Edward TRUE
it was Brian FALSE

Brian: it wasn't Charlie FALSE
it wasn't Edward TRUE

Charlie: it was Edward FALSE
it wasn't Arnold TRUE

Derek: it was Charlie TRUE
it was Brian FALSE

Edward: it was Derek FALSE
it wasn't Arnold TRUE

Therefore Charlie was the one who stole the cake.

Q2: I just guessed on that one... 4sq. units (ie cm, in, ft)

05ls7gto did a good job of showing the logic for the first one.

Q2, the height of the shape is shown to be 2 units which means that the diameter of the circle is also 2 units, the radius of the each end is 1 unit. If you were to split the 'hole' and move the resulting halves to the ends, you would simply eliminate the ends leaving a 2 x 2 square. The area of that square would be 4 sq units. So the area of the shape with the hole in the middle must be 4 sq units.

An answer of 4 or 4 units is not correct. A unit is a line/ distance, not an area.

4 is a wrong answer, but not because 'syntax'.

Regardless of your argument, you gave clues to the answer, eliminating anyone's chance of correcting their answer. You potentially took points away from people. There was no other way I could give a chance for people who I knew understood the question but stated their answer wrong without giving the question away. 'Syntax' is correct enough without cluing in on which question I was talking about.

Do not give clues or discuss the answer before the question is closed. It is unfair to the other people playing the QOTD.

For the first question, you really only needed the information from the first 2 people (Arnold and Brian). If we knew it wasn't Edward based on Arnold's statements, then Brian's lie had to be that it wasn't Charlie. That being the case, we know it was, indeed, Charlie.
