Oh.. Sienna, pretty color. (for me to poop on!)

Question of the Day #11 Closed 10.09.09

A woman goes into a hardware store to buy something for her new house. When asked the price, the clerk replies,
"the price of 1 is twelve cents,"
"the price of 44 is twenty-four cents,"
"and the price 144 is thirty-six cents."
What does the woman want to buy?

PM answers please.

The answer is House Numbers, Each number costs 12 cents. a number 1 and two number 4's to put 144 on the house will cost her 36 cents.

Googled before or after the PM? When I saw this one on another site, it took me all day to figure it out. I kept going back to it and reading it again. Then it hit me @ 4 in the afternoon.

While PMing. I spent a minute or two thinking over it and gave up.

this is one of the questions on a test I had years ago in a logic class. I got it correct then and now.

the way u wrote the question was enough for a hint.

Its a shame I have to spend so much time - space on explaining it. .lol. But I like it and thats what the idea is... isnt it?

Even though its a little subjective, I wish there were bonus points for explanation.

but I think I did spent quite some time, explaining, after I had figured it out. one of the best puzzles so far.

I agree. After I googled it I nearly smacked myself in the face because it was so simple. :doh:

I'd rather lose 4 points then gain x points I don't deserve. :)

Na you can answer it short and still be correct. The question says "What is she buying?" not "What is she buying and show the math.". :)

he didn't give the answer away, just admitted to googling it. No lost points but no gained points either. :) My mom always told me "If you tell me the truth, you won't get in trouble." And actually stuck by it. I respect the truth.

Hmmm.... The way you guys are talking, I'm wondering if I got it right, because I was thinking this was one of the simpler ones.

Most of them are simple, you just have to think outside the box. If you got it, it's pretty obvious what it is, no doubting required.

Thanks for your honesty. When I initially looked at the question I though "what could cost 12 cents for one but 36 cents for a gross?

I'm pretty sure that was the original 'trick' in this question but I wonder how many people still use gross (a dozen x a dozen = 144) as a measurement when buying stuff? or a Great Gross (144 x 144 =20736)? I used to by drill bits in great gross quantities all the time. (well @ once a year really)

Three variations on the correct answer:
She is trying to buy address numbers. The number "1" is $0.12, the number "44" is $0.24. Buy both and put them together, and you get the number "144" for $0.36
I didn't see this version myself, my solution was exactly the same as SilverGoat's, including the first line of her response. :)

Once this hit me, I felt quite silly that it took so long to get. :)

She's buying numbers to put outside her new house. She lives at 144 something street. Each number costs 12 cents, so all three numbers cost 36 cents.

and the simplest correct answer:
Numbers for her house?

"something for her house" doesn't quite cut it. :) There were two wrong answers.

Never heard that term before.

Never heard that term before.

Dozen = 12

Gross = 12 Dozen (144)

Great Gross = 144 Gross (20766)

You really don't see them used much anymore. I've had one application for Great Gross in my life. Used Gross a little bit more. I suspect that Eggs are still sold that way though.
