Question #18 is closed. 10.20.09 9:57 AM

You are the Judge at a car show. There are 5 awards to be given out for 4th place 'Best of show". The local auto parts store has donated the cleaning products that have been on the shelf for 18 months collecting dust. You have 5 bottles of "No- Rinse Wash and Wax" (Yay?) in a 5 gallon bucket. How can you give all 5 4th place 'winners' a bottle of this wonderful product and still have one bottle remain in the bucket?

PM answers Please.

Answer, one of the 'winners' gets a bottle and the bucket.

The most common mistake was pouring the contents into other 'empty' bottles or the bucket itself then into other bottles. Since the question doesn't mention the other components, it can not be assumed that they are available.

PMed with the only possible way I see to achieve this. Hope the 5 4th place winners don't find out. :)

My answer makes sense, and would work, but don't know if it's what you're looking for.

Hand out one bottle to 4 of the "winners" and the last one can get his bottle in the bucket.

Only thing I could come up with.

The most common mistake was pouring the contents into other 'empty' bottles or the bucket itself then into other bottles. Since the question doesn't mention the other components, it can not be assumed that they are available. The second was having the judge be one of the winners and keeping both a bottle and the bucket. But after reading the question again, I have to accept that. I didn't specify that you couldn't be a winner.

My answer was to pour the contents into the bucket, but did not use "other" bottles, I said to use the same bottles the contents came in. So all components in my answer were included in the question, and it satisfies the objective. Points?

It does not because you ended up shorting the contestants part of their prize.

Ok, fair enough. :)
