I placed an order about a 2 months ago with Discount Tire. Low and behold, the rims I originally wanted will take till the Fall to get. Screw that. Well I go in there a couple times and look through every catalog for a possibility. I ended up with an 8" wide Anthracite 18" Enkei OR52 wrapped in Nitto NT-555 extreme tires. I also planned on a staggered set, 245/40 and 275/35. They swore to me they would fit with no problem. Well last week I got the call and they are all set to go. I get the tires put on and as I pull out of the lot, I hear violent rubbing on the outside of the tire. The two rear tires had been schredded. It sucked, but I was right by the store so I took it back. They got on the phone with both Nitto and Enkei and found out we had to go 265/35 in the rear to not have any clearence issues. Well, this afternoon, I got another call telling me my new tires were in. Sweet! After they get this set on, and a short drive, they are still rubbing on the outside ripping apart the tire. They got on the phone again, told the story again, and now they say they HAVE to go 245/40 in the rear and that is the only way it will fit. I can't help but think it isn't the width of the tire. Too many people on here are running 18's and 275 w/o problems. The rear offset is 40 mm and I believe that is causing the dilemma. I mean no matter what size width 245/255/265/275, if the offset is the same, won't it be sticking out the same distance causing the same rubbing??? This is so frustrating, especially since they look sooo nice!! Anyone with any help please let me know. I have been waiting too long. I have pictures of the rims and a close up of the ripped tires, but I don't know how to alter a picture to make it work on here.

On an 8" wide 18" wheel 245/40-18 is the norm. If you want to go wider than that you will need to have your fenders either rolled or grinded down. There's a size/offset chart floating around here somewhere. Do a search for that and it will help you out.

1st problem, 275 on 8" rim. Lots of sidewall bulge, sloppy handling, etc. 2nd issue, the offsets all wrong for a big tire. You definitly want to be around a +50 offset in the rear. Third issue...they wanted you to use a 265-35-18 rear tire? Thats shorter than the front. Looks funny, and makes the abs and trac control angry.

thanks for the input. isnt is kind of rediculous that Discount Tire, a place that only deals with tires, can't get me the right set of wheels and tires? So do you suggest just having 245/40 all the way around?

I suggest 245-40 all around on a 8" rim. I do not recommend 7" at all, nor does GM.

http://www.ls1gto.com/forums/attachment.php?attach mentid=17341&stc=1 Get the fenders rolled and quit trying to make something work that won't. It's the stores fault for telling it would work but since you want what you want do what any good hotrodder would do. Make it work.

Grrego- I am going through the same thing also Discount Tire

Apparently by moving from an 8 wheel to 8.5 moves (w/ 40 offset) moves the wheel out even w/ a 245 so it rubs.

I am going to look at a 235 40 18 tire.( The size they use in Australia)

Guys.... STOP IT!!!! Dont let people put the wrong things on your car. Would you let a mechanic throw a LT1 motor in your car if you needed a new engine? Hell no!

DO NOT downgrade to a narrower wheel!
DO NOT downgrade to a shorter, narrower tire just to make your wheels fit.
DO NOT use a shorter tire out back than you have out front.

Guys, I know the market is thin right now for wheels. And whats out there is either on backorder, or expensive. But the stock wheels will do just fine until you save for what you want. WAIT IT OUT. Wheels should be a long term item. Dont put new wheels on that are not right for the car just to get the stockers off. Youll be unhappy very very shortly after your purchase, even if it manages to look decent. Seriously guys...dont go down this road.
