You are racing an new endurance class. It sort of sucks, the point is to see who can travel furthest on a gallon of gas. You are only allowed to put 1 gallon into the supplied gas tank and tune the engine of the supplied car. The tuning part of it, you got. You are friggin' brilliant there. Unfortunately you only have 2 fuel cans, one 3 gallon can and one 5 gallon can. The supply pump has no gauge to tell you how much you pump out but you are able to return fuel back into the supply tank if you need to. How can you put exactly 1 gallon of gas into your 'race' vehicle so that when the tech crew checks you out, you won't get disqualified? (The prick judges have a gauge and you don't,)
PM answers
Answer:
Fill the 3 gallon can, empty it into the 5
Fill the 3 gallon can, top off the 5.
You now have 1 gallon left in the three
Fill your tank with the remaining 1 gallon in the 3 gallon can and return the fuel in the 5 gallon can to the supply tank.

There are many variations of this puzzle and I dig them all.

Haha, I like it 68
Reminds me of when I was on the SAE Baja team in school and at one of our competitions the well know prick judge made a rule that only cans marked as DOT approved could be used for refilling...only problem is that UL approves gas cans, not the DOT.

thanks, I try to re-write them to fit the site a bit. :) A bit of trivia truth, I did in fact buy a set of Blizacks and cheep rims last week. Wrote the question with the original total (+/- a few cents to make the math smoother and avoid half cents), then got a better price and saved about $150.

Me too. This is about as simple as it gets, the GTO / Mustang across the river question last week was a difficult variation of this type. :)

I tried to answer it as simply as possible -- the way I try to solve most problems. But unless I can start waking up earlier, I'm doomed to being the one point wonder, here on the west coast. :bomb:

The river one was brutal. After exhausting myself trying to figure it out...I tapped out when it came to rewriting my logic (that wasn't guaranteed to be correct anyways).

The way I got that one was with 3 blue bottle caps (GTO Folk), 2 yellow bottle caps(little Mustang Folk) and a large cap from Gatorade bottle (big Mustang guy). :) Drew a line down the middle of a piece of paper and moved caps back and forth to figure it out. That is the same way I checked everyone's answers in case they had a non-standard way that still worked.

You would be surprised how often something like this comes up in real life. Cooking, building a machine, mixing oil for a 2 stroke/ marine engine. There has been more than a couple times where I had to use two 'wrong' measuring tools to get the right measurement.

Yeah, it's in the 3rd one and is the same question only they are trying to get 4 gallons instead of 1. Same logic tho.

Fill up the 3 gallon tank and dump it into the 5 gallon tank.
Fill up the 3 gallon take and top off the 5 gallon tank.
There will now be 1 gallon left in the 3 gallon tank because of the 2 gallons you used to fill the rest of the 5 gallon tank up.
Fill up the race car and return the filled 5 gallon tank.
I would fill the three gallon container, then pour those three gallons into the 5 gallon container. Next, I'd refill the 3 gallon container from the supply container, giving me 3 gallons in it and 3 gallons in the 5 gallon container still. Pouring as much of the three gallon container contents as I can into the 5 gallon will leave me with one gallon in the 3 gallon container (and the 5 gallon container full). Then I can go and show off my mad tuning skillz. :)

And the awards for the most convoluted path to the proper results go to...
Pour 5 gallons in from 5 gal pail
pour 3 gallons from 3 gal pail into empty 5 gal pail
pump back out 3 gallons to fill empty 3 gal pail
pump out remaining 2 gal to ground <-----Wait.. What? :)
take 3 gal pail with 3 gal gas and pump into now empty gas tank
pump out enough gas to fill the 5 gal bucket (only had 3 gal in it) 2 more should fill it up and leave you with 1 gal gas in tank
Fill the five gallon flask competely, now pour 3 into three gallon and keep the remaining 2 in the 5 gallon flask.
Now put the three from the three gallon flask back in the main tank and pour the 2from the 5 gallon flask into the three gallon flask.
Now fill the 5 gallon flask again and this time fill the remaining three gallon flask upto the full mark so u have 3 gallon in one and 4 in the 5 gallon.
now empty the three gallon flask back and fill the three gallon flask from the five gallon flask and as you fill the three gallon flask u'll have 1 gallon remaining in the 5 gallon flask .. Happy racing.
You have a 3 gallon can and a 5 gallon can. Dump them both into your empty race tank. You now have 8 gallons in the race tank. Pump the 3 gallon can full and dump it into the 5 gallon can. Pump the 3 gallon can full again and then fill the 5 gallon can from the 3. You now have 1 gallon remaining in the 3 gallon can. Dump the 5 gallons into sxty8goats car and then pump the remaining 2 gallons from the race tank and put them in sxty8goats car as well. Now put the 1 gallon from the 3 gallon can into your race tank, you are ready to race!
