For the second one, what lens did you use to get that picture? Researching some ultra-wide-angle lenses for my D90...

Ok, camera people. Give me a recommendation for a new multi-purpose lens for my D60. I have the basic 18-55mm that came with the camera.

Most of my photo's are of landscapes/cityscapes/large format/outdoor/moderate zoom?

*a some camera gear is on the shopping list while I'm back in the states.

You need a tripod. A good tripod. I have a Proline w/ carbon fiber legs and a ball join head. Well worth the cash that I spent on it. Also a remote shutter release cable will be worth it. As far as a lens goes do you want a larger zoom? Like a 300mm zoom or do you want a wideagle? A fisheye? A macro?

I don't know Nikon Lenses....

But, for landscapes/cityscapes you want something WIDE. Like 10-20mm wide.

If you want something all around, look for an 18-135 (it's a canon size, not sure if there's a Nikon equivalent), but its not going to be particularly good at anything. If I were you, I would buy a good telephoto lens for people/nature/whatever, and a good wide lens for your land/cityscapes.

18-135 is a very standard Nikon size. But he already has (what I assume is the kit lens) 18-55. I'd get a 70-300mm (well I already have one haha) and a TRIPOD! I can't stress enough about how important it is to have a tripod.

Oh, didn't mention, but I have a 55-200mm zoom as well. Rarely use it.

Tripod is a good suggestion but, think of this. A lot of my pictures come when I'm away on trips to new cities/places around Europe. I like to travel light (I usually fly everywhere - * lives on isolated rock up north). So, I only take one lens with the camera.

So? What would you choose?
Not too worried about $. Well as long as we stay under 4 digits!
The good wide angle might be the best bet as VGT suggested... But I do like some tight detail shots of cool features I find.

18-135 I guess. If you don't use your 55-200.. I would probably use the 55-200 more than the 18-135. Or get a 50mm or something like that. A fast lens f2.8 or lower (f1.4 )

TXRaider
11-05-2009, 11:46 AM
hum... I think about picking up both a 50mm and a wide angle 10-24mm

Just looking at most my travel pictures. Yeah, the wide angle I bet would do 95% of my photography.

wow... the 10-24m lens damn near bust 4 digits!!! mmmm... Is it really worth it?
Kinda want the prime too, but that's a lot a jack for some new lens.

Oh yeah, and where do you guys shop mostly? I'm just looking on Amazon right now.
The wide angle I looked at: Nikon 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED AF-S DX Nikkor Lens

These are all with a 10-20 (I don't have too much available to me), and yes good glass is worth the price.

I have a 50mm f/1.8 that recently bit the dust - probably one of my favorite lenses - I plan to repurchase it.

Stupid shots from a party when I first bought it, so dont expect art ;)

I'll add a bit more on crop factor and lens circle later when I get home and have decent photo editing software.

I love the 12-24mm lens. That's high on my list of must purchases. The next lens I'm going to pick up is the 70-300mm for when I go to watch the NHRA races next year.
I recently picked up the 35mm f/1.8 and that's a lot of fun. Still learning how to use it best. Will post up some of my handiwork soon.
