I didnt know if this has been brought up but.....

Some have taken this possible 4-door to mean...

2 front doors and 2 rear suicide doors like the Saturn Ion Quad coupe and the Mazda RX8...

Not 4-Door Charger

IIRC, that is exactly what the article said...rear opening doors....

I think there were a few articles.... And thats what one said.

But everyone thought it was gonna be a real 4 door.

Some people worry about structure in these type of doors.

For Saturn they were very worried about the Quadcoupe and side impacts..

Now the Quadcoupe gets a higher side impact rating than the sedan

I don't see the point of having the 2 rear suicide doors. It just makes no sense at all to me.

Do you really need that selling point on a limited production vehicle? How many more cars are you gonna sell with that option? Plus it just adds extra weight to the car.

Now if they made a G8 (Grand Prix) as a base 4 door, with a 2 door + 2 rear suicide door option I think that'd be a nice option to a high production car.

Make the sedan coupe like. Not a coupe sedan like.

If there was a suicide door option on the current GTO I would have bought it. It makes a lot of sense for family guys, like me, who have to stick kids in the back sometimes. My wife's Explorer is by far the primary family hauler, but every now and then I have to stick carseats back there and lean in to buckle up the kids. I wouldn't have the car if I couldn't fit them in at all, and a suicide door would sure help. Hell, I'd rather have a full 4-door version. I understand the Holden donor car that is made into the GTO also comes in a 4-door in Australia. I wish that was an option for the American GTO. Historical muscle cars are great, and it's nice to be true to the spirit and all that, but reality trumps it. I'm just glad it has a useable back seat, unlike the Mustang.

JohneHoodlum - I like the wheels. What make/model?

I don't really like the idea of a four door performance car, but I definately don't like the electronic controls that have to be used to move the seat forward in the 04/05 GTOs. At first I thought the back seats on these cars would be nicer than my 02 ws6's, but it takes so long for people to get back there that the comfort factor isn't worth the hassle.

They need an option on our cars to manually slide it forward for rear seat entry... or possibly suicide doors.

Suicide doors are not confirmed, it was reported like GM is humoring it and nothing more.

Look at the Holden Commodore and Monaro, they're the same car with a different number of doors. That's the likely approach GM will take if it's true.

I totally agree. It sucks to have such a nice backseat that's nearly impossible to access, it makes the car a pain for going places with others in. That's one thing I really like about the new Charger, the back seat is readily accessible.

I for one would have no problem with having the small rear acess doors like the saturn and rx-8 as long as it retains a coupe profile. One of things I love about this car is the roomy full bucket seats in the back. Problem is only really skinny people can get back there because the front seats do not go far enough forward and the doors aren't long enough. And that damn slow ass electric seat motor. No, I don't want a traditional 4 door sedan but the rear half doors would make the car a lot more practical.

Gto will be a 2 dr coupe, end of story.

There is a trend towards high horsepower 4 door vehicles. The CTS-V is a pricey but perfect example. Cutting edge design, outstanding performance with traditional 4 passenger amenities all under one roof. GM has recently announced their pototype/concept Camaro which is to be displayed at next years major autoshows. This is obviously an effort to capture a share of that market where Ford is currently a runaway. The possibility could then exist that the next generation GTO would be configured with more than 2 doors. The current 12K unit expected sales is not really much incentive for GM to continue the GTO in 2 door fashion.

I was hoping you'd chime in on this subject.

jakester, They are HSV V2 GTO 18" rims from AUS. Thanks for the compliment :D

Lets not forget that all the GM musclecars of the 60s,70s (442s,GTOs,SS,GS,etc) were 2 door versions of 4 door cars.. The Monaro is a 2 door version as well of a 4 door car. They just should not call it a GTO if it has 4 doors,,maybe Lemans for the sedan and GTO for the coupe would be good. The fact that the aussies have LS1 powered, 6 speed 4 door sedans and stationwagons is a good thing!

aside from exactly what the final style outcome would be...i think the most important thing IMO is what the structure/chassis RWD platform will be and "more than likely" will be shared with the gamut of GM cars with the Camaro name which seems to be appearing over and over..don't matter how chic the outer body may be if your platform sucks..inside out..not outside in.

I don't mind if it has 4 doors, as long as they don't call it a GTO. Call it a Tempest, G8, LeMans, whatever, just not a GTO.

If they make a 4 door GTO I will never buy another new GM product.

Found this on UltimateGTO.com a guy named Marc Senger drew it up I thought it looked cool. I think its a good blend of old and new, not too much of either one.

Looks alot like the G35. But I guess that can't be avoided. Not a bad direction to take the car at all.

I just think the artist put all his energy into redesigning the front. I can't fault him for slacking on the rest.

THAT is a great front end. I love the stacked headlights and subtle other retro looks.

If GM pulled the curtains at the auto show and something like that was behind them, I would ask "where can I trade in my 04 and sign up for one?"

That is really sweet. Practical looking yet very muscular. If it turns out like any of the other pics, I'm keeping my 04 or getting an 06.

I also like this, but mostly because it has a Monaro greenhouse. This could probably be done on the current platform.

I think NISSAN/INFINITI would be blushing as the stacked headlight is something they've been applying throughout their lines of cars. Again like many say it's not bad but c'mon GM..originality speaks volumes and with all of your design capabilites I would find that if they feel the need to resort to copying another's work is just sad. I see the new COBALT and start seeing HONDA CIVIC in the front and I'm not alone with that perspective. We don't need to be another KIA building clone cars that look like MERCEDES.

TxSam

I agree mostly. But the stacked headlight design is more a retro Pontiac design cue I think. On other car, besides the GTO, I can see it as copying the Nissan/Infinity look. But on a GTO I think it works well because of the GTO heritage.

food for thought, dodge origanaly was going to use the same concept on the charger and look what they have now. sad part was the concept was really cool, looked like the old charger .only thing is it would have run on propane and the hp was i think 300 hp-400hp.so needless to say chances are gm will do something dif from what they draw up.

Wow! A retro design that doesn't look so bad, I wouldn't mind driving something like that. Of course some of the body lines on the rest of the car need to be creased a little to match the front but overall it's pretty good.
