View Full Version : Likelihood of a Special Edition mid-year '06?

BanditWS6

Anyone have any thoughts as to the possibility of a special edition GTO being introduced at some point in the second half of the 2006 model year? Perhaps something to commemorate this generation of GTO?

My dad works in Detroit for a GM supplier; today he tells me he heard a wild story about a local dealer saying there was going to be a Judge special edition in 2006 that would be bumped up to 575 horsepower. We both agreed that sounded ridiculous, especially coming from the mouth of some dealer manager, but it got me wondering if perhaps there might be some kind of less-fantastic special edition on tap.

I don't recall when the 2002 Collector's Edition Trans Am was introduced -- was it a known package at the introduction of the '02 model year, or was it only introduced later in the year? I suppose something similar might occur with the GTO, even if it is only a cosmetic package.

I would be surprised to see it while the cars are still being made by Holden. Now, maybe after a successful first run of the US made GTO version. Of course some dealers might just jump the gun with a power adder and some nice decals (aka Yenko cameros).

The option of a Nickel colored GTO would be interesting. I like having proud paint names. Phantom Black, Yellow Jacket, Barbados Blue (kinda makes me think I should be in Barbados).I can see it now: Nickel Silver Metallic.

BTW, Chris, just a little hint. *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*

I think its a possibility. 575HP seems a bit high but the LS7 will fit in the GTO so 500 HP is easy. As far as out powering the Z06, well there's a monster 600 HP supercharged Z06 nearing production. :secret:

Yeah, the Z06 is the pride and joy of GM's cars. I kind of doubt that they would let the LS7 be put in the GTO and let it be about on par with the Z06. I won't completely count something like that out though, because Mr. Lutz seems to kind of like the new goat. It's just not very likely.

There were also a number of people saying they would "Never Never" put the new LS2 in the GTO because it would take away from the Corvette. Well, that happened, and the Vette's doing just fine. So, I'm not gonna completely write-off an LS7 in the GTO... I could see a 50K 500HP Judge in my future!

I hightly doubt the LS7 in THIS gen GTO will happen. It would crank the price up. They are just starting to sell GTOs good and I doubt they want to mess that up, even if it is only a special edition.

The LS7 is each hand made and tested, that tells you something right there about the price.

MY GUESS: SAP, 18" wheels, Exhaust, Springs and a few little mods to bring it up to 405-410 (looks better than 400 on paper). MSRP: $40k

Doesn't really matter if they up the HP on this thing anyway. The way GM has set this thing up, (torque management, heat soak issues) too little of this "power" is getting to the rear wheels. 400 HP ? Gimme a break..... :banghead:

While the GTO is the fastest car out of the 3 at this time (Charger, Stang), our top status is soon to be lost. The SRT-8 Charger is gonna be faster and so will the GT500. It be nice to see GM do something to bump up the power a bit or at least change some of the programming so that the heatsoak and TM take less of a hit on the performance. They also should put some better tires on the car, Nitto 555's standard.

Yeah, that thing has even more nannies than the GTO. One of the car mags tried doing a burnout in one during the 3-car showdown. The charger pulled enough power to stop wheelspin, resulting in a 3rd place set of marks (3rd by a LONG shot). Guess which car won. ;)

yep, they have little dwarves down there underneath the mountain sweating over the forge fires, hammering away at those aluminum blocks.

Sorry, but the block is cast in Mexico, shipped to America (Kentucy?) and semi-hand assembled. I can promise you a lot of the tools they use can't be found in a NASCAR garage. Saw a special on Speed channel a month or two ago.

You mean the 6.3L stroked LS2 which is the supossed LS3? Which was around 425Hp? Last I heard was CTS-V was getting that because "the LS2 is already used in too many vehicles"

Maybe in a few years, unless it is cheaper then the LS2, that's one of the main reasons the GTO got the LS2 vs. still having the LS1. The LS2 block is cheaper to cast and they already made them for the C6. So they saved money by giving you a bigger engine with more power. Win-Win

Every car magazine I've seen calls it the LS3. I thought it to be strange that any LS based engine turned to drive the rear wheels should get the LS# designation. The FWD & truck based LS style engines should have a different code, to prevent confusion.

No "Special Edition" version for 2006 model year, though the team tried putting one together, to no avail.

No more HP is planned for the car.

Yes, a new silver color is coming mid-year.

No 2007 or 2008 is coming (soonest you might see something, if at all: 2010 model year, if GM can figure out how to create a cost-effective platform).

Interesting, I tend to believe you since I have found that Pontiac is lacking in imagination and tends to be late to the game.

I specifially asked him last week if he could arrange to get it to me faster then standard DHL once he picked up the hoods. He said it could be done. I'm hood number 3...don't know how many he picked up. I do know that GM wanted 2 hoods but he put them off for the moment so that we could get ours first.
