View Full Version : Should I rotate my tires?

I just turned 6K miles.
My fronts have more thread than the rear.
I just dont want the fronts to get choppy, but I dont have a problem changing the rears sooner than later.
Any "have to reasons" for a rotation???
Anyone with 12-15K non-rotated fronts that are doing well?

I just rotated mine at 6k. I figure if I burn them up evenly, I can replace all for at the same time and justify rims with the wife as well.

rotate 'em...I waited until 8.5K and had quite a bit of chop up front...

My dads has around 14,000 mi with no problems at all. Mine on the other hand were rotated at around 7500 the first time, they were chopped enough to make my steering wheel shake between 55-60mph, it only got worse after about 3500 miles. When i rotated them back it got a little better! but it finally pissed me off enough to bitch to the dealer and surprisingly i got four new tires out of the deal! In conclusion it can go either way?

why wouldnt you rotate them?
I have 15,500 or so, I rotate them every 5,000 miles and they are all wearing evenly. Rears this time a bit more worn than the fronts but that will even out. I figure I have 30% life left in them.
Rotating them gives you a good look at the tires so you can see if you have any alignment or suspension problems. Like strut rub or if the inside fronts are gone or not.

why wouldnt you rotate them?
If the fronts are wearing funny from rubbing on the strut tower brace.

Mine just rolled 3,000 miles & I am getting ready to rotate them! I usually do it every oil change around 4,000 but I am going to do this one first, b/c w/ these gas prices I might not get that many miles on it till the winter, I have been drivin' the bike, much better mileage & actually more fun to ride!!!
FWIW, I've never been a real believer in rotating tires. If one must rotate tires to get them to wear evenly there are probably suspension/steering/chassis geometry issues that should be addressed. I'm not so anal as to where I will freak out about some slight uneven wearing but if there is excessive uneven wear there's obviously a problem somewhere other than the tires.

I never rotate. The traction at the track always seemed to get worse with former front tires on the rear. Now I just send my cars into turns hard enough to wear all the tires evenly.

Good rule of thumb is to rotate every other oil change.

I'd vote rotate. I had 9K miles on my front & they looked very choppy. Plus, it allows you to insepct the inside sidewalls of the tires. I changed my tires this week, & to my surprise, the rears were splitting where the sidewall & tread meet. :eek2:
