Seems like the timing would be excellent for this

I agree! It would be perfect timing with gas at $3+ per gallon

Adds to the cost of the motor, so they would have to raise the price of the car. It's not only programing in the PCM, there are extra parts in the motor as well.
Not many people that buy performance cars want it either.

You got it. I want to be firing on all eight all the time. :burnout:

Works seamlessly on the GXP. It would work fine on the GTO. Price is the key.

I can't see where cost would be that much more. It could be offset by the fuel savings.
Go Bucks!

I don't think I'm ever out of the gas enough on my GXP for the DOD to even kick in. It was nice to tell the wife it will help with gas mileage, but I don't care.
Several years ago they were considering putting it in the C6 Corvette but they decided that most guys who buy Vette's don't want them to sound like a 4 cylinder .
So DOD was nixed on the LS2.
The famed 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine with Multiple Displacement System (MDS) on Charger R/T and Daytona R/T delivers the goods, featuring a deep-skirt cast-iron block with cross-bolted main bearing caps and aluminum alloy heads with legendary hemispherical combustion chambers.
Power: 350 horsepower at 5,000 rpm (340 on R/T) (DOD like)
Torque: 390 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm
Fuel economy: 17 mpg city / 25 mpg highway*

And 21mpg in A4 will have to do with gears and not the engine itself
Hm..... :sneaky:

Guys I remember way back when they experimented with this on Cadillacs, worked great during the first few months.........needless to say those vehicle retained zilco resale value, then again many of just bypassed the control and had full time V8s but consumer confidence was lost. I think GM is hoping everyone forgot about that fiasco

that was back in the early 80's, i dont even think i was born (82) yet , but anyways, they didnt have the computer technology to control the 4,6,or 8 switch like they have today. It wasnt a smooth transition either, loud thunking noises and stuff like that.
Todays dod engines are supposably seamless, ive never driven one.... but I think it would be great to be able to drop down to 4 cylinders on the highway or puttin around town. I would want to control it though, with a switch or something like that.
Come to think of it... when I had trouble with my pedal and it went into safe mode, I remember the tech at the dealership telling me that the safe mode cut out some cylinders so maybe it is possible our engines could do this without any added parts, now the computer part is a different story...

Its done with the oiling system and special lifters and oil pumps.

A manual control switch would be cool. I might be able to live with that. Good idea.

GM Will not do this on the low volume GTO in its last model year. Were Lucky they are still building it at all

i forgot where i read this, but ive heard of someone rigging up a LED that is triggered and comes on when cylinders are deactivated. They said they could slightly hear them go out, but it was pretty seamless. I *think* it could have been in the dodge world (hemis have DOD now, right?) or maybe it was on the performancetrucks forum.
Point being, im sure if a LED could find the deactivation signal, a switch could be done to activate it/deactivate it.
i can see it now
"SLP DOD manual switch module, only 79.99!"

I got 24mpg in cruise @ 70 this weekend in my A4 as long as the road was flat, droped to around 21 on an uphill though.
Still got 21.5 mpg round trip from home and back with mixed driving. It would have been higher but no one wants to use cruise on the Interstate and couldn't stay in cruise as long as the way there:judge:

It doesn’t make it any better for the HEMI with DOD ;)

They could sell a set. CAGS defeat and deactivation switch.

They do - its called the accelerator pedal. :D

Correct...there are MDS solenoids used to control oil flow to the lifters...the exhaust valve doesn't open during the exhaust stroke; an exhaust charge is compressed...DCX uses the term 'air spring' to describe the trapped exhaust charge...
It'd take more than a 'switch' install to properly override the MDS system...a simple upgraded calibration would do the trick though... ;)

well what I was saying is that it claims 21 mpg highway for the A4 GTO, well if I got 21.5 MPG total with mostly highway but some city mixed in on my trip then I would have to be over 21 on highway for the average to be over 21 correct?
That's what the point of my post was.
I don know what you are getting at though. if the hemi didn't use the MDS(DOD) then the mileage would be worse.
Since they deleted it on the srt-8's check the mileage that thing gets. 14 city and 19 highway, also has a gas guzzler tax of $2100
regular hemi is 17/25 with the MDS system.
