View Full Version : Fender Roller For Rent: Part II
Snafu
09-08-2005, 12:18 PM
4TH SET IS COMING! WAIT TIMES REDUCED EVEN MORE!
Here's the deal:
We have purchased and are renting an Eastwood Co. Fender Rolling tool (see pic below) and 2-stage ProLine heat gun. We will send it to the first person on the list, when they are finished, they will either send it on to the next person on the list -- to minimize shipping costs for all, or send it back to me if no one else is renting (per my instruction).
Price is a $40 rental fee for the tool and heat gun and you will cover shipping to the next person.
Payment is accepted via paypal, MO/Certified-Check, or any major Credit Card!
http://www.ls1gto.com/forums/attachment.php?attach mentid=10675&stc=1
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*PLEASE NOTE THE FIVE WASHERS ABOVE THE TOOL*
READ THIS AND FOLLOW IT!!!
When attaching the tool to the hub, make sure you use included dished washers between the lug/nut and the tool. If you do NOT, you will damage the face of the tool and be penalized for any repair cost in repairing the face of the tool. The washers come on the handle of the tool. One end of the handle unscrews so you can remove them."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As I would rather not follow the trends of other companies who rent these
($50-$75 rental fee + $300-$500 deposit + insured shipping both
ways...ouch!), we will be observing something of an "honor system". If you
receive the tools and either is damaged, contact us immediately! (info@topshelfperformance.com) If you damage the tools (it's tough to do), contact us...you break it, you fix/replace it, but no worries, the tool is really tough and almost all steel so it will be obvious if it was damaged via shipping or by the user.
The next person will be waiting on you so please do not receive the tool and just sit on it for a while. We ask that you not keep the tool for longer than a week, that way we can keep it moving. We do fully realize that setbacks can occur, so just keep us posted and we can work it out.
Below is a disclaimer. By renting the tool set, you acknowledge having read and agreed to the rules and release us of any liability related to use of the tool. No big deal, but I have to cover my six.
Ok, let's break it down...if you want to rent it this is what will happen.
1. Post Here to be added to the list.
2. I will contact you when it is your turn to receive the tool.
3. You will pay me the $40 rental fee.
4. You will receive the tool in the mail. Inspect it upon arrival and
email/PM me to let me know all is good/bad.
5. Use the tool [like I had to tell you that part]...in a timely manner.
6. Let me know you're done with it and I will give you the shipping info for
the next person on the list.
7. You ship the tool.
8. You're happy. You have big fat tires that don't rub. :burnout:
WE HAVE 3 FENDER ROLLERS & HEAT GUNS AND THE 4TH SET IS ON THE WAY, SO WAIT TIMES WILL BE CUT DOWN AGAIN! (all kits are identical)
CREDIT CARDS ACCEPTED!!!

Here are some basic instructions:
Additional Tools Required:
The following items should be present and in proper operating condition to conduct the fender rolling operation:
• Floor Jack
• Jack Stands
• Manual lug wrench for wheel lugs
Instructions for Use:
1. Raise and support either entire vehicle or vehicle corner on which fender rolling operation is to occur.
2. Remove wheel and place hub flange portion of the Fender Roller over wheel lugs. Place the dished washers (included) onto the wheel lugs. Use wheel nuts to hold tool in place; tighten snugly.
3. Loosen the handwheel located on the arm of the tool and adjust the arm length until the Fender Roller wheel is centered on the inner fender lip. Tighten the handwheel.
4. Using the release lever, adjust the roller angle to match the desired shape that the inner lip will be formed.
5. Adjust the pressure bar to apply gentle pressure to the formed lip.
6. Use a heat gun to gently warm the paint in the area to be rolled (to prevent cracking).
7. Grasp the tool firmly and repeatedly swing it in an arc across the inner fender lip to form the desired shape. It will be necessary to adjust the pressure bar to keep constant pressure on the lip during the operation. If the wheel arch radius is varying, it may be necessary to form the lip on small sections at one time, readjusting for each section radius.

How much can you stretch the fenders using something like this? Can you get an inch out of this?
CSiJason
09-08-2005, 06:21 PM
It doesnt make the fender wider... You roll the great big lip on the underside of the fender upwards with it to clear a wider wheel and tire or one with a lower offset.
I was one of the first to rent it from Snafu, worked pretty good. Takes a bit of muscle to use but if you are lacking in muscle, just call some friends over and tell them you have beer.

Oh it's just used to roll that 1/4" fender lip? I was under the impression it would be used to push the fender out. Guess it's gonna be a baseball bat :)
Would it be good to cut most of the lip off then use this tool?
Snafu
09-08-2005, 10:13 PM
Cutting the lip off is just another option. Some people don't like the idea of cutting, so they "roll" the fender.
I have seen this tool used to push the fender out, but it would have to be at the hands of a very skilled person...I would not dare attempt this.

09-09-2005, 04:28 AM
Yea I guess all this time I thought guys were doing more than just rolling that little lip on the inside. I figured the tool could be used to roll out the fender...but your saying that's gutsy?
What could actually go wrong? Chip the paint on the fender or possibly have a wavy looking fender?
bnvus
09-09-2005, 06:20 AM
Alot can go wrong. Just remember if you push the fender or 1/4 panel out to far you stand the chance of creating low spots in other areas or stress cracking.
Law of physics. To move metal means to take metal from another area and vice versa.

I am looking at having my fenders rolled and asked how the shop does that and they said they do it with a rubber mallet and a piece of wood! I was not impressed! I called another shop and they said that they do it but said it was expensive because the paint will have to be touched up where it cracks.
Whats the real story!!

If you use an actual fender roller and a heat gun, and take it REAL easy, you shouldn't have any issue.
I'm in once the tool makes its way close to the Detroit area. Thanks.

I apologize for the delay on this guys...if you've seen my thread in the off topic section, you know I've been sick fighting some thyroid issues lately so I haven't kept up with everything. I'm getting back on my feet and wanted to give you guys an update. Ok, nuff about me.
The list in the first post is updated.
As for how long it will take to get to you on the list, HERE'S THE DEAL...
this depends on you, the users. the faster you use it and ship it out the faster the next guy gets it
if one of you needs it right away (new wheels just got there, getting rubbing, etc.) maybe someone else who is in no rush will let you go ahead of them...you guys can handle this part, I'll just require that the person that is letting someone go in front of them let me know it's ok with a PM or post
per my orignal instructions, the shipping to the next person is your responsiblity
I prefer paypal, if you choose to pay with MO or check, I won't ship until I either receive the MO or if personal check, it clears; so keep this in mind and send payment slightly in advance so as to not delay the process
Please post if you would like to rent it...I get PM'd and emailed, and posts and it's hard to sort out who is next. If we keep it to posts, it's obvious and there will be no arguements.
Ok, that's all for now guys.

can you put me on the list please?
also, once the tool is mounted onto your hub, is it easy enough (aside from muscling it) to do this correctly, or is there a change of screwing the fender up big time? basically, once the tool is mounted, is it just turning the thing and you dont have to worry about it being balanced or what?
thanks!

You're added.
It's fairly easy...when I did it to my car, it was the first time I ever used one. Basically you just heat up the paint on the fender area (not too warm, you just don't want it cold), then turn the crank on it to apply pressure. Work the arm back and forth until there is little resistance. Tighten crank applying more pressure and repeat. Every now and then you may need to re-adjust the arm to make sure it is proper contact with the fender. There is no balancing involved.
If that didn't answer your question, let me know and I'll try to explain better.

I know it takes some time...you have to figure the time it takes to ship to the next person, them using it, next person getting payment and address to me, then however long it takes the person who has it to get it shipped.
In defense of scauffiel, his is currently in transit (got tied up by UPS for the past few days...I hate UPS).
This is the reason I'll introducing a 2nd Fender roller into the mix, so you guys don't have to wait as long.
In the end though you're renting a tool for $40+shipping that normally costs ~$100 to rent, a $500+ hold on your CC, and shipping BOTH ways. So I guess it's a matter of patience vs money.

The wait depends on how fast you guys use the tool and pass it on. On average though, about 1 week per person.
You are welcome to ask others if they'll let you "cut" in or swap places...I don't get involved in that. Just have them PM me so I can verify it's cool with them.

Hey guys, there have been several people who sign up to rent the tool, then either decide against it or get it done elsewhere...that's no problem. What I ask that you do is just let me know. I end PM'ing and emailng the next person on the list and waiting for a response...you get 2 in a row that backed out and depending on response times from them, that can take a week! That's a week that someone who wants it could be using it.
Anyway, just give me a heads up if you're not goin to rent.
Thanks.

I'm just adding a testimonial...
I rented from Snafu during the first round earlier this year and I was very impressed with the whole deal...
I run 275/40's on 9" wide rims. These are BMW spec ASA/AR1's that are only available in a 45mm offset, so I had a serious clearance issue. Complicating this are the Pedder's "stock height" rear springs that actually dropped down about 3/4's of an inch. I was really aggressive with the lip rolling tool but worked it gradually while sweeping the heat gun. I got no paint cracking at all. Clearance has been fine except at the very edge of the sheet metal quarter panel where it meets the rear bumper cover. This corner required a bit of hammer work with a rubber dolly on the outside, resulting in some paint cracking where the quarter panel rolls into the wheel well opening.
Overall, a really successful and inexpensive solution to the limited rear tire clearance we're stuck with.
Be kind to Snafu, he's providing a very unselfish service.
Snafu

MOPAR Refugee,
Thanks for the kind words and testimonial. I'm glad it worked out for you too! We've had many members here have success with the fender roller, myself included :D When it comes to paint cracking, the slower you take it the better, also making sure to heat the area has quite a bit to do with it. You have to go into this accepting the possiblity of some very minor cracks in the paint, it's just the nature of the work...paint doesn't bend easily. This is the reason that body shops usually won't do this for you (I tried everywhere before I bought the roller), they don't want to be held responsible for any damage to the paint and/or fender.
There really is nothing to fear though. Just get a buddy or 2 to help you out, crack open a few cold ones, and get to work. Like I said, take your time and go slow, but be advised this does take some muscle - you're bending steel after all!
Older Goat,
Just added you!

How long is the wait time for the roller?
It generally averages one week per user, however, is common for users to let me know that they are not ready to rent the tool due to varying circumstances. So I move them to the back of the list, until it's their turn again. If this happens, the wait obviously decreases for you...I'd say that this is likely considering the season...guessing that many will become busy with the holidays.
I've added you to the list...this doesn't obligate you to anything. If you want me to take you off the list, just say so. If you choose to stay on the list but then find an alternate means of taking care of your fenders, just let me know so I can take your name off. Thanks.

If you look at the first post, it is updated regularly, that way you guys can always keep tabs on who's got it. Once it's used, your name is deleted.

Quicksilver05inSD, I added you to the list and will let you know when it's your turn. As for the paint, yes, heating up the shop would definitely help, just let the car stay in the heat for a bit so that the paint and metal get warm too...the metal will be harder to roll if it's really cold too.
Rhino74, thanks man! You know, I've lost track of the head count...I did make my money back on the first set and a few extra bucks so I went ahead and bought another set with the money because demand kept growing. It's kind of like "pay it forward" the money guys have spent to use it allowed for another roller for other user's to use. I just know how antsy I was to roll my fenders and figure this will help everyone out. If I make a few bucks in the process great, if I break even, fine. We'll all have big fat tires and be happy! One end of the handle unscrews so you can remove them."

As I would rather not follow the trends of the companies who rent these
($50-$75 rental fee + $300-$500 deposit + insured shipping both
ways...ouch!), we will be observing something of an "honor system". If you
receive the tools and either is damaged, contact me immediately! If you
damage the tools (it's tough to do), contact me...you break it, you
fix/replace it. The tool is pretty tough so it will be obvious if it was
damaged via shipping or by the user.
The next person will be waiting on you so please do not receive the tool and just sit on it for a while. I ask that you not keep the tool for longer than a week, that way we can keep it moving. I fully realize that setbacks can occur, so just keep me posted and we can work it out.
Prior to the tool arriving, I will email you a disclaimer. By replying to
this email, you will acknowledge having read and agreed to the rules and
release me of any liability related to use of the tool. No big deal, but I
have to cover my six.
Ok, let's break it down...if you want to rent it this is what will happen.
1. Post Here to be added to the list.
2. I will contact you when it is your turn to receive the tool.
3. You will paypal me the $40 rental fee.
:burnout:
WE NOW HAVE 2 FENDER ROLLERS & HEAT GUNS, SO WAIT TIMES WILL BE CUT IN HALF! (both kits are identical)
WHEN SIGNING UP, PLEASE PM ME AND PROVIDE ME WITH THE BEST WAY TO CONCTACT YOU! I have had trouble getting in touch with people lately, and this delays things for everyone. Thanks.

CarbMofo & gtomiami, you guys have been added to the list
When would the tool be ready to be shipped provided the funds are there to you?
Well, I can add you to the list...there are a few users listed who have asked to wait until after the winter so you would go before them but have to wait in line with the others. EVERYBODY RENTING HAS BEEN GREAT!!! They have used the tool and passed it on quickly, which keeps everyone happy :hail: Thanks guys!
As for payment, I don't ask you to pay me (and would rather you didn't) until the tool is ready to be shipped from the current user of it. That way, there are no worries on either of our parts and you'll have a tracking# right away!
If you have any more questions, feel free to post or PM me

I'd like to hear from some members on this. How hard was it, did it work with out paint cracking??
I am really mechanically inclined. I recently changed my own oil for the first time in my life. I am good at tinkering around with wiring and putting in sending units but something like this is a little tougher.
I'll get back to you on wanting to get my name on this...maybe ahead of some people if they are still waiting until warmer weather.

My wheels (TSW Nogaro 18" chrome) should be here in about 2 weeks, is there anyone who doesn't need it right away that would be willing to wait so those who do need it very soon? I'm noticing the wait would be approx. 2 months based on where I am on the list right now :(. Won't be able to put these wheels on until rolled considering I will be running some Pirelli 275's in the rear.
Appreciate anything you guys can do to help me out :). These are some wheels just released from TSW, so would love to get them on ASAP and post some pics for all you guys.

Sorry guys, the previous person (mdmike) had finished and the next 2 members I contacted dropped out on me but I was waiting to hear back from them. The tool going TO berjet was sent USPS and took almost 2 weeks to get there!!! I had falsely assumed that it had arrived after the first week and that he would be ready to ship so I contacted the next person. Since Vtodd82 was paid up, I had mdmike ship to him and berjet will ship to you since the person before you just dropped out. Whew, that was alot of juggling!!! Ls2edGTO, I currently run the following setup:
18x8.5" 35mm offset up front, 245/40/18 Toyo Proxes T1-S
18x9.5" 40mm offset in rear, 275/3518 Toyo Proxes T1-S
Our hub has a bolt pattern of 5x120mm or 5x4.72" with a 69.5mm centerbore.
These require complete rolling of the fender to accomodate them. I'd venture to say that these are the outer limit of what will fit as far as offset and width is concerned. The fronts fit fine, btw...no issues.
Toyos tend to have a rounded shoulder that allows for a little more tolerance with the fender clearance, generally speaking. I believe BFG's and Nitto's are more squared which causes more of a chance of contact. See illustration below...the fender and lip are not moved from one picture to another and keep in mind that the tire will not move straight up but rather in a slight arc when compressed.

Here's some more info on offsets, http://www.ls1gto.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5822 1. There are a few calculators that you can use to compare to your stock setup. This way you can see how much further the wheels/tires will stick out and how much more space it will take on the inside as well.

Ok guys, I got some BAD NEWS...
One of the fender rollers has broken. :( A bolt and castle nut's threads were stripped and it is in a key location. This is no one in particular's fault, it must have loosened and continually got stressed over the past year of use.
now the GOOD NEWS ...
The user who has it now took it to a machine shop to get the threads cleaned up and a new castle nut. The nut is an odd size and has been difficult to find. I'm having it returned to me and I will try to get the proper pieces from Eastwood or check on any warranty that it may have. I will get it back on the road and to the next user as fast as I can...I'll keep you all posted.

how would you go about cutting the fender wall?
Snafu
01-24-2006, 01:10 PM
Well you cut the lip, not the wall...you use an angle-grinder with a cutting wheel or a die-grinder and take it down as far as you need to...usually just leaving a tiny lip left just to help the fender panels stay aligned.
[hey, this is my 2000th post ]

Just be sure that the cut off wheel you use isn't connected on one end to a bottle of Jack Daniels like the PO of my '56. The cut is as wavy as the Pacific Ocean!:madsign3:
I tried my best to roll what was left and it looks pretty good, but it would have looked a whole lot better if he had just rolled the fender lips in the first place!
I guess it's just like my daddy used to tell me...there is no substitution for doing it right the first time.;)

Hey man, I'm not trying to be rude but please read the first post in this thread, I address all issues and may give you some more insight as to the operation as well as showing the waiting list which is updated regularly. Thanks :)
But to answer your questions, you can submit payment via paypal (preferred...sales@topshelfperformance.com) or via money order/check (these must be received in advance). I will contact you via PM when it is your turn, but also ask for other contact info (phone# and email) so that I can get a hold of you if you don't check in here regularly.
As for biggest size, that's tough to say because it depends on the offset of the wheel. Mine are 18x9.5" 40mm offset and I fit 275/35/18's with no problems. If you have a larger offset, you should be able to fit a larger tire.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
Oh, and you are added to the list! :D

Hey Snafu,
Thanks again buddy. A word to everyone on the list BE SURE YOU HEAT THE PAINT ENOUGH. Dont be happy with luke warm or you will crack the paint I was impaitant on the first side and I got some minor cracking. The second side I got really hot (but dont burn the paint) and had no problems so take your time. I'm pretty happy with the results so it was worth doing.

Please lets be honest everyone ...Has anyone that has used the fender rolling tool for are GTO's had any issues with rolling there fenders and have had any of the paint Chip /Crack? & Did the tool do the job to say put on a M/T 275/40R17 DRAG RADIAL without any other modifications to the fender wells without rubbing or cutting into the tire?
We should do a poll to see.
Just trying to determine the risk involved in doing this mod myself

I had a shop use the same tool Snafu is renting on my car. The guy using the tool crack and chipped my paint and the guy used too much force and rippled my passenger side quarter panel. I think the quarter rippling can be avoided but in my IMHO, there is no way you can avoid paint cracking and chipping. The metal on these quarter lips is just too thick.
This is just my opinion and I don't post this to bash Snafu.

Ok, guys...just wanted to chime in before everyone gets carried away.
First off, I would not rent this tool out if it was just a means of destroying your car! ;) The first time I used a fender roller was when I bought the first one and rolled my fenders. I did it with a friend who is a bit zealous and got a bit ahead of me warming the paint...I got some minor cracking on the underside of the fender. I took his RedBull away from him and told him to slow down! :slap: We warmed the paint and moved more slowly, covering a smaller area at a time...NO cracking.
Most feedback I get is that user slightly cracks the paint on the INSIDE of the fender (where you can't see it) and by the time they get to the 2nd one, they've mastered the technique enough to keep cracking from occuring.
Look through all the pages of this thread and you will find one thing I keep repeating: "Take Your Time! Go slowly and make sure you heat the area well (warm to the touch) before you roll it." Is it time consuming? Yes. Will it work? Yes. Is there potential to screw it up? Like anything else, yes...it is a tool and put in the wrong hands, can do damage...just like Owe5Goat relayed (I'm sorry man, that sucks). This is why alot of shops do not do this work, the simple liability of it and the fact that if they make the smallest crack the owner will be upset--which is only normal. It's not worth the time and money for them to do it right. However, if you simply take your time, it produces the desired effect! NO ONE has noticed the cracks in mine...want to know why? Because no one sticks their head in my fenderwell!
It's the same deal if you cut your fenders, you have to spray them with undercoating or paint to keep them from rusting...just do the same after rolling and no problem.
It has been over a year since I did mine and where I cracked them, I immediately coverd with touch up paint and clearcoat...no additional cracking or rusting has occurred--and I park my car outside! (wish I didn't though :()
I'll see if I can get some guys to post up their experience so you don't think I'm just blowing :burnout: up your :bootyshak ...haha :gr_jest: :p
gto676 and swicks5, consider yourselves added! Thanks for the service swicks...now get your butt back from the sandbox! Semper Fi! :-patriot:

Hey guys, you have been added to the wait list. Unfortunately I can't guarantee any wait times since it is dependant upon so many different factors. I can tell you that on average, the tool is gone for a week for each user listed. So you can estimate that way.
I just received the 3rd roller and am getting the kit put together with the heat gun so that will go into effect this month and reduce wait times for everyone!

Mike,
Not too bad. I can actually drive the damned car again! The passenger side was the first one we tried....heated it up good, but the damn metal did not want to bend....took forever, but we got it to bend enough to clear the tire...one small paint chip on the bottom side. Driver side went much better. Seemed like the metal was softer on that side. One crack along botom edge. Will seal up with touch up paint. The driver side tire still rubs the back part of the wheel well just above where the bumper meets. Can't roll that spot due to the bumper cover support there. It only rubs when I hit a big bump or really throw the car around onto the left side. Seems the cradle is out of alignment, but I might have that taken care of next week.

Hey,
I just hooked up with Freedom_Fighter (John) and we went at it to mine first. As far as im concerned it worked rather well. The first side turned out to be easier then the other. Everything went pretty smooth, I think i have one minor crack but i will look at that in the morning. The tool however did suffer a little wear and tear and the nut on the pressure bar stripped off, but we put a pretty hefty cotter pin in so I am sure it will work. I was a little aggressive with it and tried to hurry so John could get in but as it goes, trial and error takes a while and I had no problem taking the first shot at it. The roll is decent and even across the main contact area for the 275 tire. I wont be hitting the track or anything for a LONG while so I just needed the initial clearance for the tires. All in all it was simple and fun body work.
Thanks alot for the help John, and might I add, sweet ride. Im sure we will run into each other around here again.

I heated the bejesus out of the paint/lip and I didn't crack any paint on the outside..just a bit on the inside on one lip. Nothing bad though.
I did however create a small hardly noticable ripple in my driver's wheel well. Basically a dent from the inside out. Its not that noticable, but its there.
