I was looking into it when i found this site.....
http://www.g4tv.com/techtvvault/features/39872/Pre view_Xbox_Mods.html
Its got 10min clips from a tv show that shows you in depth how to do it, where
to get the parts and software. Really cool. Shows you how to back-up games, run FTP, upgrade the HD.

Xecuter Pro 3 Mod Chip is the best one I have used.
Easy to install if you can handle a soldering iron.
I rent games from blockbuster and copy them right to the xbox. You must install a bigger hard drive also.

If you are real good with computers. You can stream movies through the XBOX to your TV also with this mod.
I have dual Xeon server in the basement. Which I use just for this purpose. I never have to burn DVD's any longer and that save's you even more money.

I have one of these in my 1.6b X-Box working great (solderd). Works great... funny part is I don't really play X-Box games any more (XBMC (music/video) and Emulators)

I'm really interested in the solderless chips.Do I need to get another hard drive or can I just burn the games to disk on my PC?

Going solderless isint always the best way- the connection can come apart, its abit of a pain. Honestly its best to spend 2-3 hours and do a solder job.

It's funny how "modding" games is alive and well! Reminds me of a small game store I took over in the early 80's from a guy that was "selling mods" for a fee outright in public. This rocket scientist was doing good for years until SONY shut him down. Just a word of friendly advice...at the very least fellas PM each other as THEY ARE watching. What you call modding they call pirating and is a Federal offense in the US...IMO...otherwise feel free to broadcast this in public.

Someone I know (thats all your gonna get) mods them without a chip or soldering. They just put a 200GB hard drive in one tonight and modded it with just software. Kids called him a GOD when they left.

Tim give me a call if you got my Number still, I'll PM It to you again. I can help you with this. I have modded about 20 Xboxes. There are lots of options out there now, but if you are changing your system (upgrading to larger HD) and play on Xbox Live it may ban you even with the chip off because it can now detect hardware changes. That's why I have two Xboxes now.

That is Partially true...
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/11/17/tech/mai n656254.shtml
Neil Smith, an intellectual property lawyer in San Francisco, said there's little legal risk in modifying a game system for relatively benign personal use, such as to give your character infinite lives or to more easily advance to another level.
Modifying you Xbox isn't illegal, but copying the DVD's and such sure is.

..said users face more legal risk -- and companies have more leverage -- if a person is modifying the system to play pirated or other unauthorized games. That's especially true if the person is altering his or her system's security codes or settings.

Personal use-yes; advertising to mod another's machine and or for personal gain is a different matter as to what I was referring to. But then again "what" is specifically illegal is rather subjective and is best to be safe than sorry. Or you can be that scofflaw and test the manufacturers resolve.

As a matter of fact every Xbox I've modded I've only given them legal open source software (like the very excellent Xbox Media Center) on their machines and I let them do what they want to it after they take it from me. And I only mod systems for people I know, like Timonator here who I've met before and painted my Goat's hood, I figured I'd return the favor and help him with his Xbox plans since Hardware is what I do. Anyways since I only mod for friends (more of a group project day when we do it) the only personal gain I've gotten is getting a free dinner bought for me, I don't charge anything. I also don't order the parts, etc that has to be done by the person who wants the chip put in.
On this subject there was some mall store in Chicagoland, I think, that was selling "SUPER XBOXES" for double the price loaded with mod chips, games, etc. They went down pretty hard after a few months of doing this. That's just stupid to sell packages of modded systems with games pre-installed in a mall of all places for large sums of money.
Strange how a less popular mall like Spring Hill near me has allowed someone to sell bootlegged Nintendo systems with pirated modified games for the past year and a half. Strangely Nintendo themselves aren't too concerned about them pushing a lot of product there and have yet to investigate reports turned into them own that location.

From what I've seen most manufacturers usually send a "cease and desist" letter first and are required to comply or else. The small mom and pop stores that we all know exist may appear to be unscathed but believe me ..every dog has his day. I bet Nintendo wants to see how far up the chain their bootleg products go..the bigger the fish the better.

my roommate modded our's...it is awesome.....not sure of the details on how to do it but if you do download xbox media center with it.
it has networking setup so we can access any file on any computer in the house and watch it via the xbox...basically we can download anything and watch it on the tv without having to burn it to a disc.
also if you buy a bigger hd you can d/l games and put them directly on the hd...it makes them load so much faster.
sorry i don't have much technical advice but i can say it will make you xbox about 100x more useful.
