About 0130 hours, I am coming home with my girlfriend from my friend's 4th of July party. We were on a double lane stretch of road and the speed limit is 35 mph. As we are passing the Shell gas station on my right, there is a Pontiac Sunfire waiting to pull out. As we are going by the car, the people in the Sunfire are staring at my car. They immediately accelerate quickly and pull up along the left side of my car. The car has two people in the front that looked 18 or so, and a girl behind the passenger that looked the same age. The driver starts honking at me, then pulls away from me quickly as if trying to bait me to race. My girlfriend says to me "What the heck is he doing trying to race us?" I say to her, it is not worth it and they are just being morons. About ten seconds later the driver hits the brakes and slows down in the left lane until we catch up. I look over at a**clown and he is accelerating and slowing down repeatedly still trying to get me to race. So finally he guns it and takes off. He then comes up quick on a car in front of him, then suddenly changes lanes last second into the right lane. The car that he passed turns off at the next street on the left. My girlfriend jokingly says "Flash your badge at him." I had no intention to because I just want to get home, but hey I'll have fun and scare the little bastard anyway. So I am approaching moron that is stopped in the right lane. So I changed lanes, and slowly pull up in next to him. I roll the passenger window down, and all three people are in the Sunfire looking at me, and the driver is just glaring and smirking at my car. I hold up my badge and yelled "Boy did you pick the wrong car to try and race. State Police. What are you trying to get someone killed? How would you like me to mail you a $500.00 dollar citation for racing and there does not need to be a prior agreement between operators, along with a $250.00 citation for speeding? Smarten up Moron!!!!" All the while I am saying this, my girlfriend is facing me and cracking up laughing. I had all I could do to keep a straight face. Speaking of facial expressions, the drivers face went stone cold scared and straight forward, he got what I call the "Rigor Mortus pose." Everyone else faced forward and did not move. When the light changed to green, he took the right turn about 2 miles an hour. We both started laughing hard out loud. That was fun. :gr_jest:

Man, that is BS. All the talk about racing and having fun on here and you go scaring the crap out of some kids. I know because I had a cop do the same crap to me. I pulled up next to a cobra on the freeway and tried to get him to go. He wouldnt and followed me off the exit. He pulled his badge on me and I told him to shove it up his @ss. Now whether I would have been that cocky without my brother in the car(significant pull with Law enforcement)is yet to be determined. I can see the humor in it, dont get me wrong, I just dont agree with it.
I forgot to mention that I had seen the same Cobra participating in street racing and the general scene...
So I guess if your a saint and have never raced anyone in your car then you had every right to do it.

WKDWS6,
You should conduct your research and read my posts prior to writing a response. You say a cop did the same thing to you. Number one, do not generalize all police because of one incident you are recalling from your past. Secondly, my racing was at the TRACK, under proper conditions, not on the street. Finally, NO, I have not raced anyone on the street with my GTO.

this was not a smart idea. i dont care if your brother is the mayor your stinking town, if you tell a cop something like that you better be expecting a ticket.
you should also remember that if your brother really does "have significant pull w/ law enforcement" that your actions will reflect badly on him, and make him look a major @$$.
think about. its one thing for your brother to ask "can you get my brother out of of a speed ticket?"
its quite another thing to ask "can you get my brother out of a ticket, he told the cop to stick up his @$$?"

If you're connected, better tell the judge, cause he ain't buyin it. Some of the other cops don't like him, but they all respect him.

What's sad is that I just tried to find a picture of a 9-year old girl that I buried in El Paso a couple of years ago. Killed by a couple of fellows from Ft. Bliss street racing in their pathetic Hondas. I used to have the pic, but the El Paso Times has it buried now in their archives. Keyla Fuentes was her name. Try consoling the family.
We need more troopers who like to put a little fear of God (or least fear of the law) into young stupid kids.
We also need more of what we had in El Paso: the street-scene worked with the police to find legal venues for their cruising, the kids policed themselves for the privilege to hang out at the cruises, and local merchants supported them. They also convinced the owner of a local private airport to allow races there once a week. Kids got it out of their system and drove home at the speed limit. Death rates related to street racing dropped significantly.
Some of you may have seen my video (http://pages.prodigy.net/padregto/ep1_0006.wmv) of my recent racing in El Paso. Aside from fun, I had a secondary motive: I'm sharing it with our local law enforcement to see if we can come up with something for our kids in this college town. I have plenty of influence with my local law enforcement, and I intend to use it to keep people from dying, not to get me out of a ticket.

Seriously, my opinions on street racing aside, this is awesome.
As one of the few members who openly condones street racing, I'll say that is something like the airport deal was available to me locally, I'd be VERY much against dropping it on the street. The problem here is the only local track is not very friendly all the time, and their open time is limited.

Padre,
That is very simmilar to the way we used to run in Florida. We policed our selves and there were a few officers that quietly suported us. In the three or four years I ran with those guys there was not one accident or injury among our group. We were shut down after a couple kids weaving in and out of trafic on a friday afternoon lost controll and killed 5 people. They were in an area that we did not use. The local paper splashed "Drag Racers Kill 5" accross the paper and we were done. Clamp down.
Everyone: You are very lucky to have a place to run if you do. Treat it and everyone there with respect. Play nice.

Only a $500 ticket trooper? it was a cool thing what you did, plenty of class. In IL they have been known to impound cars for street racing frequently. A guy I knew had his 300ZX impounded and judge gave him $2000 fine, didn't help he was set up by a undercover black on black tint Mustang GT.

Speaking of being baited by a cop... I was working night shift on the flightline at Charleston AFB, SC one night and we were watching this road that parralels the runway. Well this car is driving along "minding his own business" when another car comes up about a foot off of his bumper and starts riding his ass. This goes on for about 5 seconds when the guy in front has enough and floors it. He gets about 5 car lengths on the car behind him when all of a sudden the lights come on and the car in back turns out to be a cop. What a ****! What makes it even worse was that about 90% of the people using that road are on their way to the back gate. So, the cop was targeting us.

This thread has nothing to do about being baited by a police officer. Quite the opposite in fact - it was about a police officer in a GTO being baited by some idiot kids in a Sunfire. I hardly see how your story compares.
That said, I had the same thing happen to me once in New Mexico - getting onto I-25 I had a jerk in a big black Expedition on my tail so I decided to move to get away from the guy and on came the lights. I got out of it but the fact is, that's called entrapment.

This thread has nothing to do about being baited by a police officer.
Actually if you look up a couple posts there was a thread were a guy was "set up" by a police officer, That was what I was referring to.
That said... Is this kind of behavior legal? It seems to me that no cop should be able to get away with that, and if it happened to me I would take it to court, of course I would take anything to court.

There may have been a post about being baited, but the point of the thread was a cop being bated by a SunFire. And no, I don't believe that entrapment is legal. But what do I know?

That was acually pretty stupid, besides working for njdot i have a lot of cop friends i can tell you that everyone on the force with any sense and maturity especially the chiefs really frown upon flashing your badge. Besides that being a pretty dumb story its funny because you can't write him a ticket anyway you would have to radio in a local cop and have him do it but you couldn't hold him there in the mean time, besides i dont think there is a $500 ticket for "accelerating in a sunfire at 0128 hours" Point being don't TRY to abuse your power nobody thinks its cool, and the people that do that are always the ones none of the other cops like anyway, keep ur badge in ur pocket unless ur on duty and acually need it. :gr_jest: :gr_jest:

Wow another roadside or shall I say internet lawyer talking a load of crap :barf: . You are ignorant as well as very mistaken. :banghead: To enlighten you had you done some research, a Massachusetts State Trooper is on duty 24/7, can write citations, as well as arrest on and off duty. Oops you kinda missed that one didn't you. Next, he did try racing me, and wow, let me reference the Massachusetts Motor Vehicle law book....yep, you are wrong again. He tried racing and there does not need to be prior agreement between operators. $500.00 fine. You seem to preach alot, all the while making no factual statements. That applies to NY State as well 24/7. My teacher was a Lieutenant for the NYPD. He was on his vacation up in New England and happened to run into someone they were tracking for a while. Well he has no jurisdiction in other states, but he sure as hell called the local police and eventually got the guy back to NYC. Pretty good vacation.
Actually the 24/7 factor for Police is pretty signifigant. As far as i remembered it, if a cop sees an accident, even while off-duty, it is that police officers responsibility to stop and render assistance. Now anyone can avoid helping out, but if its found out that a police officer decided not to help, the department may suspend and punish that police officer. I could be wrong about it, but that was how i remembered it.

You are correct. It is called duty to act. After being sworn in, as long as I am a Trooper and come across an accident, I have a duty to stop and render first aid whether on and off duty.

The cops around here LOVE my car. I raced against a cop who was driving my Dad's Mercury Marauder in last month's autocross. That man could DRIVE, but I still beat his time because he hit a cone and was penalized two seconds. There's another cop who pulled me over after I barked 2nd off a stop light, but he didn't give me a ticket. In fact, he said he would have done the same thing if it was his car. Yeah, I wave at the cops, all friendly like, because I know I need them and despite my "adventures", I really do try to be safe. That may be the only reason I still have my license. :)

I think you really need to take a hard look at your self and try to grow up a little and see the situation for the reality of it and not that your pissed off cause it may have happened to you. remember... everyone grows older, but not everybody grows up.....

Some departments will send their people to advanced driving courses, and the Marauder is probably the closest to a Police Interceptor package of any production car. There's something to be said for racing a vehicle similar the the one you drive all day long.

GotzaGTO, What do you think most troopers would do if they saw a GTO go by them on the interstate at about 140? You think they would just let them go and not give chase. (and there always seems to be a but) there are alot more factors involved... the individual trooper and what he or she is willing to do, traffic and safety issues like you had mentioned, how many units are avalable... if he is the only one out there, then a radio wount help much, then there is the planes that track speed and there can be a trooper waiting for you to come. i can give you a solid answer, but if someone went past me at 140mph, i wouldnt risk it to catch up....

He had every right to do it...
First the kid had two passengers, one another dumb punk kid, and two a young girl who is too cluless to understand... While racing is one thing, I'll never race with a passenger in my car. If I kill myself thats my fault but I shouldnt be jeapordizing my passenger... and thats exactly what happened with that girl in the back.
Second I try to fight the urge to race young punks, I'm sorry but we were all young once and kids are just too damn stupid to race safely... Blowin redlights and stop signs for pride... and just to stupid not to take a turn at 90 in a sunfire.
I woulda been a **** and given him a ticket :)

Sorry just couldn't resist
I didnt even get to this post before I replied to your first one... Your obviously a young, immature Jacka$$ with out a clue in your stupid punk head... Get a life before you hurt some innocent bystander. The kid wasn't accelerating a sunfire, he was racing... end of story. Who do you think the judge will side with? A cops word or a dumb punk kid?
Hopefully one day you'll grow up... If not I'm sure you'll wind up wrapped around a tree somewhere...

LoL....somewhere out there on a Corvette forum, there is another thread just like this one :) . I tried to pull up next to a corvette once, he anticipated my move, and just flashed the badge out the window before I even pulled up next to him :) . I just smiled and waived. All I planned on doing was pulling even and sizing up the situation...but apparently he didn't even want to put himself in THAT position :gr_jest:
