View Full Version : GTO redesign

Nascar GTO

I just left the dealership a few hours ago to order my 06 GTO. He said that about 21 people got to see the concept for the redesigned GTO. It seems that they are looking to have it based off of the mid 60's design. I'm kinda surprised that they didn't design this GTO from that like the Ford and Chrysler have done with some success.

Sorry, I vote :bs:

The 06 is fixed and in production. 07 is in doubt, maybe 08 will be the GM Zeta platform. There is no prototype to view IMHO

Typical dealer BS

Dealers are the last to learn about anything dude.

Currently there is no concept of the next GTO out in the public yet.

Just saying what I heard. It would make sense that they would try a retro design. It wasn't a public display, but, then take it with a grain of salt.

Some other things I have heard dealers say regarding GTOs;

"if you order a GTO it will take a while to get here because they are made in Germany"

"we should have an '06 in next week"-said in august

"are you looking for a 2 door or 4 door?"

"this one is loaded with all the options, leather, PS,PW CD player..."

It is amazing both in what they dont know about their own products and what they will say if they know better.

I had a dealer tell me that they are only making the GTO one year (the 05's had already come out) and that yellow was a special option color and extremely rare.

Dealers know how to fill out paperwork...beyond that, they are useless.

No one is flaming you. Its just we all hear the same crap over and over. We have very reliable people on this board that are very close to G.M. Gtpprix and others that will hear news and post it here before any know it all dealership will get the right information.

I like many other 04 pre order folks had to teach our dealers about the car they we selling us? Now what is wrong with that picture? :judge:

Some dealers know what they are talking about. But they are in boards like this all the time and have inside friends.

06 is end of this platform yes, retro design coming for 08 yes, 07 GTO most likely not although there have been sketches and articles, but the next goat will be retro

Well, it IS possible there is. When I lived in socal, I used to get invited to market research studies. You went, saw the stuff, answered questions, and on the way out, were handed anywhere from $75 to $100 cash for just a few hours of your time.
I was invited to two car ones- one was to see how we responded to a wood panal covered minivan (it was obviously a chrysler) and the other was a small sport coupe. In both surveys, all brand markings and names were removed from the vehicles. In the sport coupe one, I recognized a Ford Probe, but the one car that I could tell that they really wanted us talk about was unknown. It later turned out to be a Toyota Celica that was about two years from production.
It IS possible that there is a GTO prototype out there as we speak, being shown to selected research participants and for the most part, they don't know what they are looking at.
GM does do this, and in there current situation, I am sure they will look hard at the findings. They did do market surveys with the the prototype for the Aztec- people overwhelmingly hated it. However, arrogant GM managers thought that anything could be marketed and put it into production. Big mistake! They'll show prototypes to their target audience (the age group, sex, income level, hobby, etc) and if it bombs, they'll know where to improve.

sorry I just don't like retro, I want a modern car that is modern looking. Not a flying brick like the olden days.

If I wanted a 60's or 70's looking GTO, I would buy one and restore it.

I wouldn't call BS quite yet. I "hear" that a GTO concept may be shown at the NAIAS show along with a "Camaro" concept.

GM called me at my house and asked me a series of questions about my GTO (a few weeks ago). They caught me off guard and asked is your GTO auto or manual? Mine is auto, so they said they needed some manual GTO drivers to come test out some new cars (said GMTechCntr on caller ID). I live just down the street from the Tech Center.

So I missed my chance, just for having an auto :(

I beg to differ. To some it is just a job. To others, like myself, it is a passion. :judge:

For some reason I seriously doubt GMTC just calls random GTO owners out of the blue asking if they'd like to come test cars for them. The Tech Center is all about product engineering, not marketing, and I'd bet they have plenty of their own skilled drivers willing to do the piloting of any cars they need tested...

A co-worker's son works there. I'll ask him today if he's ever heard of such a thing, anyway.

Ford is having some good luck with the retro design on it's 'Stang. I think that GM is going to try and do the same. If they do it right, it should sell ok. I know that one dealership in MI, was doggin' GM really bad because of the '04 fiasco with not getting cars when they were supposed to. The were really complaining about the design because it looks similar to the Grand Am/Grand Prix. Others have said the GTO looks like a Sunfire(with balls). I like the looks, and plan on ordering my '06 in a few weeks, and hope I get it by Spring. I think they could have done some better things with the trunk though. I would have liked a little more room. And, it's a lot better than having to put up with a 4 door sports car wannabe (Charger)...

This is odd. I just talked to my dealer today and she was not going to order any GTOs for 06 at least for now. she is tired of ordering in june and getting them in just in time for the end of the year clearance. She also said she herd somthing about some changes to the car for 06 but I think she is going to wait and see what the changes are going to be. I figure that train wreak wiped out the ones she ordered.

Dude, c'mon. I'm fully aware of the use of test markets and focus groups but I'd hardly consider that an example of a concept vehicle being made avaiable to the public.

I was at my dealers on Thursday and was talking to the Sales manager, and he was unaware of any changes to the GTO for 06/07, except some minor interior stuff. Then I asked about if they had any plans about making a "Retro" type GTO, he just chuckled and said he has heard NO plans about one. If you really think about it, the Firebird in it's early days, was a smaller edition of the GTO, and I think if they were to make a retro GTO it would look something like that. JMO.....No need to be hating...lol, lol.

The Firebird was the sister car to the Camaro from the very beginning, not the GTO.
