View Full Version : 245/40/18 Rubbing in Back

I bought some 18 x 8.5 wheels along with some 245/40/18 tires. Under normal driving conditions they don't rub, but under harder acceleration it sounds like they are rubbing in the back. They are not rubbing on the outside where you you would be able to see. I think they are rubbing on the inside. The rim offset is 40 MM. Is there anything I can do?

40mm offset is 8 less than stock so they are 8mm farther towards your OUTTER fender....should be where they are rubbing.

Easy way to check:

Get some white tape and line the inside of your fender lip, go drive around, and see where it was rubbing. If it's rubbing on the inside....something is wrong.

Yes, it was rubbing ever so slightly. So instead of rolling the fenders, I added a spacer in the each rear spring, which fixed the problem.

The reason your tires are rubbing is becauae of the 8.5 inch wheel. That extra .5 inch is stretching the tire out more than the factory 8 inch wheel. Should be relatively easy to correct though. Good Luck!

What are the exact deminsions of the stock wheels...I thought they were 5x120 bolt pattern...17x8..with a 40mm offset? Although, I guess I was wrong! Many are running aftermarket wheels with 40mm offsets without tire rubbing..so what gives??

I'm not sure. I was told by another member that the stock offset is 48MM, thats an 8MM difference. Thats .314 more sticking out to the outside than stock. The wheels are a 17 x 8 and the bolt pattern is 5 x 120. I put a spacer in each rear spring, which fixed the problem. The suspension seems a lot stiffer now, but it beats having to roll the fenders. Now I just need to find some stiffer and slightly taller springs for the rear. :eek2:
