View Full Version : Stock tires in the rain...

Driving tonight to dinner it was raining and a WS6 pulled up to me and punched the throttle and took off at about 30mph. I did the same and was greated with instant wheel spin and almost threw the car sideways even though TC was engaged. I'd like to know what the hell kinda tires or traction control that T/A was running. I know I've got some HP on him but that thing didn't skip a beat. Perhaps it's because I rotated my fronts to the rear recently (3500 miles on odometer) or maybe my right lane was greasy or more wet or maybe its just that these stockers are bad in the wet; but even 1/2 throttle blips at times yield quick loss of traction. I'm going to a deadicated winter snow tire set-up and want to get some new summer skins in the spring and wanted to ask what a good summer (non all-season) rain tire would be. TIA

Yeah your tires have to even out again after a rotation. I remember feeling mad slipage after my first rotation. Before rotating though they would hang on with awesome traction. This is the first rear wheel drive car that I've felt confident in with rain and bad weather. After the rotation though it all went to $hit. I'd recommend some Eagle F1's. They are a good wet tire. Bottom line though, are cars are very torquey and will definately slip if we push it too much.

Does the traction control give up eventually if you keep your foot on the throttle?

Thought rotation might be an issue...I did have some pretty good wear difference between front and back after 3500 miles  :burnout:
After rotating fronts to rear I'm now able the get a good 1.5 second rip out of the tires if I punch it in 2nd going like 30mph on dry asphalt; thought maybe it was these 50 degree temps, maybe both. Regardless it can get a little squirly on an on-ramp or making a turn on pavement especially if its newly wet, whether its the rotation, the tires or both. I've heard the PZero Rosso is supposed to be good in the wet as well.

While I'm satisfied with the stock tires the best rain tires I ever owned were the ExtremeContacts by Continental. Don't know the speed rating on them but on my Monte SS they were outstanding.

I found that the tires felt greasy in the rain when they were new/green. But, after a few thousand miles they felt more stable. Although, breaking them lose in the rain is still very easy even at 60mph. It even happens with the cruise control on. I wish the traction control would kick in as a safety precaution when that happens. A logic control wouldn't be too difficult to implement and it would create an extra margin of safety.

I use Continental Extreme Contact tires for the winter also better then the stockers in the rain. They do ware fast but Great Traction and performance, when the stockers are worn out I will use them all year.
