The stock 18" wheels came with "summer only" tires , obviously they will be bad in the snow, but does the cold also affect them?

I was out earlier tonight with no snow on the ground the car went sideways going hard into second gear. Maybe I have to get used to the car, or do I need all season tires even if I don't plan to drive in any snow?

Summer tires are made to withstand high temperatures, and are thus not suited to cold pavement and cold temps. They'll do better once you drive around and warm them up after 10 minutes perhaps (or some nice burnouts and/or 4 wheel drifts), but still won't grip the cold pavement too well. If you will avoid snow, you can use them in the cold if you drive cautiously and expect them to break loose.
