I went to check on one of my tires this weekend after noticing it looked a bit low on air and as soon as I took off the plastic valve stem cover it started leaking to the point where I could hear a hiss. Looks like my valve stem is busted. The car is about 4 weeks old (off the lot) and I had no problems checking the tire pressure 2 weeks ago and there is no way I would have missed a leak like this. So I have a few questions:

Does the tire need to be taken off the rim to fix it? The leak stops as soon as I put my finger over the top of the valve.

If it is the valve stem core can I repair it myself? How would I do this?

I might just end up calling the dealership about this and driving the tire to them in another car. My only concern is that something that should really take an hour or so to fix is going to take several days. A garaged goat is a sad goat.

It's an easy repair. Any tire shop should be able to fix you up in under a 1/2 hour.

you can go to any kragen or pep boys and look in the valve core tire patch section and find a litttle tool that looks like an "x". it will be called a schrader valve tool and get it and screw the schrader valve in untill it seats and refill tire. if you have any problems come to fremont pontiac gmc with the tire or car and ask for Scott, I am a tech there and can fix it in just a few seconds if the schrader valve is loose.

Thanks for the help. I went to Kragen and bought the Victor (Monkey Grip) MG7142 Valve Tool and Cores (http://www.victorautomotive.net/pdfs/mg/mth3.pdf) and it worked perfectly. I guess it was just the core that was loose. :wiggle:
