View Full Version : Here's a question!

I am starting to search what kinds of tires I want to throw on in the spring and have come down to 2 kinds.
1. BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KD ....or
2. Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3

Here's the deal. I want to choose a tire that grips extremely well on dry pavement, but when it rains (and since this is my DD, I know I'll get stuck in some rainstorm) I want to be able to get a decent amount of grip when there's water on the road.
I know the BFGoodrich has very good dry-grip, but poor wet-grip and the Goodyear is the best of both worlds...so, I know it sounds like I just answered my own question, but I wanted to know....
Those who have dealt with either tire, what are your impressions? and do you think it would be wise for me to choose that tire, given my scenario?
Thanks for any help.

IMO, F1s are overrated and overpriced....their treadlife flat out SUCKS and despite being so horribly soft there are other (more durable) tires out there that cost less and perform on par with it.

Personally, I suggest the BFG G-Force KDW for your application. I had two sets on my Z28 ( All 4 for awhile, then fronts only as the rears were DRs ;)) and they're an overall GREAT tire. I got around 20,000 miles out of them on average, they were fairly quiet (some people say the make a lot of noise but i never noticed it (even before i had LTs/ORYP/LM ;)) and they handled pretty damn good. :wiggle:

just my $.02

Here's two tires I am researching
1) Dunlop Sp Sport 5000
2) Pirilli P - Zero Nero M+s
Both are ultra performance tires with wet and snow capabilities.
The Pirilli's are about 30 bucks more, approxiamately.

There is more than just "a question" in your post. Please edit the title of your thread. ;)

If you can set yourself on "non-aggressive driver" mode when it rains, then go for the tire with the best dry rating. I've gotten away with driving my Firehawk on road race tires in the rain, just by being more conservative and avoiding standing water.

A tire that performs "average" in the rain will not be any worse in the wet than one that performs "excellent" if you never ask it to do anything extreme... Just something to think about. :)

Um, it's called good natured teasing (hence, the winking smiley). And I actually offered my advice to him with regard to his situation instead of making a worthless post (such as yours has now turned out to be). Have fun searching through my posts for a grammatical error if you feel that will somehow enhance your life. :)

the goodyear f1 gs-d3 tires r great. read the aritcle in car and driver about the review on sport tires. the goodyears came in first. i would go with those ones.

For me Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 for a DD car.

BFKD for the mainly summer car. The KDW2 is a great tire but noisy.

I had The Goodyear F1's on my Infiniti G35 coupe. Expensive? yes. Over rated? I thought they were great, I did a lot of canyon carving in my G, I could not get the tires loose from a launch. In the canyons, they gripped like no tomorrow, felt like I was on rails. Now, I can't say I'm an expert on tires. Tread wear was good, I drove it like I stole it every day and had good tread left after 8K mi. I used up some POS Kumho's in 8K mi. I want these for the GTO.

The F1 supercar tires suck, but the GS-D3s are very good. Not all "F1s" are the same.

That said, I'd go KDW2s! By far the best for "dry with some wet" and no noisier than the other two listed.

I've had the new F1's on the car for a few thousand miles now and have to say they are, without a doubt, the finest tires I've ever owned and Lord knows I've owned 'em all. BUT, when the F1's wear out I'm going with the new Coopers. I used to sell tires back in the day and these new Coopers look almost exactly like the F1's in design and are WAY cheaper. I know for a fact that Cooper makes a great tire. Take a look at 'em..........

Please don't take offense but I'm cracking up on the 77' Datsun PU comparrison.:hail:

quality opinions here, makes the decision tough..
all the cars I have owned that came with goodyears were easy to replace with something better, I did replace the stock F1's on the rear of my 02 Z06(rears didn't last as long as the fronts for some reason) but those tires were only meant for dry weather and did very well I hate to say..but an every day driver like my GTO is....I will probably replace mine with the BFG KDW tire or the Nitto's..it all boils down to what you want and how you are going to use your car beyond a DD..

Keep us posted!

It depends if you plan on driving the car hard in the rain. If you don't, you can get away with a better dry gripping tire. An all around good tire is suppose to be the Pirelli P zero nero M+S. The BFgoodrich g-force sports seems pretty decent too. On my boyd wheels im going to go with some Nitto 555's with a 275 width because they run small and im almost sure they won't rub. I probably can get away with the g-force sports but I don't know if I want to risk it.

well, i just put on some 18" foose spedsters and goodyear eagle f1 gsd3 and the first day i had them on it was raining and the next day it was sunny but in both cases the tires handled very well and definatley not as easy to brake free in the rain. my only problem is the rear right fender rubs and i have to get it rolled or cut :madsign3: damn wheel works they told me it would fit.

I totally agree, we got about 4'' today while I was at work, all I did was :burnout: all the way home!! Winter didn't bother me so much when
I had my Envoy (traded it for the Goat in July) back to a rear wheel fun car for my every day/only driver...

Phantom,
did you have to drive in this sh_t today??

Man.....it was a little more challenging than I wanted, only 3500 miles on'er
and there were some serious slick ass roads I had to take to get home from work!

now that that cherry has been popped its all good :-pimp:

Hey, get those Nitto's so you can give me a ride(in the spring) and find out if they are as good as everyone around here says!

whatever I go with I want to put 255/40's on my factory wheels for a slightly larger contact patch..

WARNING about the bfg g-Force T/A KD:

If you're planing on getting the 275/40/18, they will NOT fit!! No matter what your offset is! Even if you cut out the fender lips! +52 or less and you will rub the BUMPER. +53 or higher and you will need to get out the sledge hammer and crowbar to bend some tough steel (You better be strong too). I have also done some suspension work and it still rubs.

EDIT: and if you allow the tire to rub and hit against the bumper too much, I believe eventually the tire will break the bumper off your car.

We have done lots of GTO wheels and tires. After doing Falkens, Nittos, toyos, my favorite is still the KDW new style. they look great, do well in the rain, and dawson, I have not found them to be noisy. have done at least 10 sets of them

Again. just my .03cents worth. I think tires are like the fine wine syndrome. Some like it and some dont

Ok everyone elso has posted an opinion so here is mine...I hydroplained on my KDW's at a speed that they should have gripped nicely 15 mph below the posted limit and totalled my '05. I have F-1 GS-D3's on my '56 and yes they are really soft, yes they will not wear as long as the KDW's but if it is my life depending on the tire sticking then the GS-D3's will be going on the '06 just as soon as I can settle on a set of wheels for my new '06.
BTW, I have paid as low as $162 for 245/45/17's, $160 for 235's and my 315/35/17's were $260, all prices mounted and balanced with highend stems. Vendors were America's Tire (Discount Tire retail store) and Big John's. Personally, I don't call that expensive considering that you likely will be somewhere between $160-$170 for the sizes we will use on the GTO's.

When my stockers wore out at 16K miles I went to the F-1 GS-D3's. I've had them on for 7K miles and have seen minimal tire wear on them so far so I think I'll get at least 16K miles on them. I am totally satisfied with the F-1 GS-D3's grip (dry and wet) and would get them again.
