1)Open your hood
2)Lift off the DRIVER'S SIDE Fuel Rail cover (it says GTO on it ;) )
3)Look at the grey tube, line towards the BACK of the motor
4)You will see it is worn away by the Fuel Rail Cover.

I fixed it with weatherstripping for doors and some electrical tape.

This is serious issue and everyone should check this!!!!

Yup! This was the first issue I read about when I joined this forum.....

:) fuel rail covers have been gone since that day!

it also had the gas line tag on it (yellow) i wrapped some duct tape around it put a piece of velco and wrapped it again, and check it ever so often.

When I lifted my cover off, I noticed that where the fuel line meets the FRC on my car there appears to be a section of foam padding on the underside of the fuel rail cover. Doesn't appear to be any sign of serious wear yet.

Having said that, has anyone got pictures of bad wear on this section?

Yeah, I noticed the foam padding under the cover as well, maybe they did this after hearing about wearing away on the line for the 04's? Sounds like something that should be a RECALL for the 2004 model. But I did notice one of my spark plug wires looks like it has some creases in it?

they quick fixed it for o5 models.

the f body had this prob in 94...caused a few fires, was not the frc's though.

nhtsa knows about this one too.

Have your hood up that often do you? I tend to drive around with mine closed :) Then again I don't care what my engine looks like so long as it works. My FRCs have been off for a loooooooooong time. :wiggle:

One of the best parts of this car is the engine bay (motor). To want a clean compartment has nothing to do with how often my hood is opened. My trunk gets detailed as well, but do not drive with it open. My covers are on most of the time because it looks cleaner.

+1. I never had a new car like the GTO before and I didn't know much about these GEN III/IV engines back then but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out those pieces of plastic are useless. If I remember right they were the absolute first things I took off the car as soon as I got it home.

Any tricks to getting the covers off? Do they just snap off, or is there screws? Sorry for the elementary question, but I never had a reason to take them off. Till now.

to each their own, I just want yall to know, they don't make the engine contain enough heat to warrant removing them. just my 2 cents, ok?

if you want to challange me, then lets do some testing, for the record, I already have spoken to some engineers at Gm about it...... and yes, i do on a regular basis for my job, but not about gto's.......the govt. doesnt buy them LOL

How much do the FRCs weigh? Probably next to nothing I know, lol. Anyone have a pic of what the motor looks like with them removed? Does it look like the F-body LS1, which had no covers?

I keep my covers on but I think I will check for the fuel line ware. IMHO the lsx engines look to busy with the fr's, and ignition wire harness. also the valve covers are ugly. The gto bays look alot cleaner and roomier than the f-bodys. I was planing on putting the corvette covers on my T/A but I traded it in.

I know the bay was a little dirty

A little dirty??? That's similar to a little pregnant right? :D

I remember a day when f-body guys were paying premium dollars for frc's off the vettes and using filler, sanding, and painting them to cover up the engine. I never got into that. I won't take the GTO's off but I could take 'em or leave 'em. On my f-body I replaced all the stock black convoluted tubing with red tubing so my engine bay looks decent IMO.

Russell has a braided stainless steel mesh fuel line replacement, cost about $75.

I just checked mine and yes they were infact damaged, not to the point it'll cause a problem now but in the long run I could see some leaking. I'll do a quick fix after Xmas

Same here. I am not worried about it. Although I will check and see if they did the foam thing on mine. I already found one of my winshield wiper fluid nozzels was disconnected. Fixed that already.

This is the route I'm planning to take - I've got a set on the way to me.
And for me, I'm paranoid about what actually gets underhood with the scoops - I've already seen water on the FRC's with my noseplugs out after driving in the rain.

I could go for an answer to that as well - I just tried mounting the driver's side C5 FRC, and the fuel line doesn't have enough slack to fit through the single slot cut into it.

Anyone have a picture of the stock cover, i sware they must have fixed it at the end of the 05 year, because i don't see where it would wear on mine.

I'll post a pic when i can, but it looks like they lifted the plastic on the driver side cover back by the fuel line.

EDIT: bad pic, with MSpaint effects added :)

My fuel line rubs/cuts right at the back edge of the bumped-out area you circled. There is just enough length in the hose to push it against the edge of the FRC at that point, and that's where it's cutting.

I'm aggravated that there's not enough slack to fit the C5 FRC's under the fuel line, but too much slack to fit under the OEM FRC's. Anyone know where I can get an extension for the OEM line so I can fit the C5's? I'd even consider a male/female 90-degree elbow for the OEM fittings.

I know that there's the Russell line available, but I'm sure it's similar to the OEM length, and won't help.

KenP

Ah, so its cutting on the bumped section on the back. After looking at it i was wondering if the bumped section was the fix, and the older method was just a cutout on the cover.

As we can see someone here never paid much attention to others covers. :slap:

The older method (on the C5's) was a cutout on the cover. GM tried to be cute and altered the look to cover over the fuel line, but with this problem.

Just out of curiosity - anyone know the length on the C5's fuel line?

if the rusell line is a direct replacement the frc wont do damage to the steel line, i just need to know if it does replace that section and how hard of an install is it.

From what I can tell, the Russell line replaces the whole flexible portion of the fuel line.
http://www.ls1speed.com/catalogimages/RUS651105.jp g

As for removal, you will need a special tool to release the fingers inside the OEM quick-release fittings. Presumably, the Russell line has new fittings that pop back on.

For me, I just found a set of fittings at my local Pep Boys (they're behind the counter) and will be making my own braided-steel fuel line.
