I am running XP Pro on my computer. I just upgraded from 1 gb ram to 4 gb ram. In bios it recognizes all 4 gb, but inside of windows when I go to my computer and properties it only recognizes 2.87 gb.
Can someone help me figure out how to make it recognize all 4 gb?

Windows XP w/ SP2 is built to only recognize up to 3GB of memory. SP2 restricted the system to 3GB as part of a driver compatibility improvement. You will need to enable Physical Address Extension in the boot.ini file (/PAE parameter). This will allow Windows to recognize all the memory in your system up to 4GB (the maximum XP can support) - will then show up as around 3.87GB.

Sometimes maxing out the computer leads to other problems, like the one you have. You really don't need more then 2GB of memory. I don't know of any software for your home pc that could possible utilize or ever need that much memory.

But hey, who here can say they have 4GB OF RAM!?!?!:boink:
I was living at home, paying $200 rent making $20 an hour with little expenses. Before I got into cars and modding I had more money in my computer than anything else.
8 250GB hard drives was what I was rollin in for a while. I guess I just wanted to have the most before anyone else.
and guess how many problems I had.....a bunch.
