You should look before you post man. This is a common question. Try a search for widest tire or something. Not only to prevent a little   :The_Villa but there's a lot of info already archived and all the experts aren't online at once.

Quite simply, people have run 275's out back on stock wheels but your results will vary and you will likely have to roll your fenders.
However, on an 8" wheel such as ours it doesnt make much sense to exceed 245 in terms of width because you will not be able to use the extra tire as your contact patch will be distorted.
Now that I've started to spend a good deal of money on my suspension I have come to realize that handling performance is more important than appearance to me so unless I buy new (wider) wheels its going to be 245 max for me.

Not so sure about that. I am no experet at this but I think you would benefit from using 255/457/17 rear tires. Nitto's are slightly smaller in diameter and slightly wider and they fit by specifications an 8" rim. I am inclined to think the argument does not applies to all tires.

Guys,
Not to confuse this topic more but here it is anyway:
275/40R/17 NITTO DRAG RADIALS
on are stock rims will fit PERFECTLY 100% of all the people I know that have done this set up have 0% fender rub. As far as the contact patch not being utilized to its full extent is not my findings at all I should have snapped a pic of the nittos I had just replaced the whole width of the tire was worn! . But then again if I left 32 pounds of air in them yes you wouldn't get all the contact put 18 psi for track and 25-28 psi for the street and you should be in pretty good shape. for road racing listen to mc2182's advice.
Holy sht... Lanceygto we finally agree on a subject :-patriot: :)

Jet, we don't. 275/40/17's specs call for a minimum 9" rim. The OEM rim is 8".
I won't argue some people may have done that and got away with it. I myself would not try it. Largest tire within specs you can fit into a 17x8" wheel is a 255/45/17, beyond that it is 9" rim territory. Then again, I am no expert.

stock wheel size is 17x8Just to screw over everyone's mind and distract you all from talking about what a POS Evos and STis are I put 235/40-17s on the front. I don't plan on making any high speed turns fast. With the Nitto 245/45-17's out back and the 235/45-17s up front on the stock rims I saved 51 pounds of unsprung weight over my 18 inch TSW/ BFG TA KDW-2 set up.
I fell prey to that same crap about 8 inch being only for 245's wish I had gone ahead with it. I will tell you though that BFG tells you straight out that even their 245s are not recommended for 8 inch rims, they say the minimum is 8.5. You guys are right about the Nittos having a smaller profile though.
I had to roll the fender with the 18 inch 245/40-18 BFG's so I have naturally had no problem with the NItto 245s. As soon as I burn them up I'm going to the 275.

See I told you we agree on somthing I agree that you even said that your no expert.:gr_jest:
Seems as though you always want and are in need of book specifications based on a few of your other remarks on threads from me and other posts in the past from others on different topics.... And thats fine no problem with that but.
Why are you so conservative with everything? you have that freakin magnacharcher on your car let me ask you this Does general motors tell you in the manual its okay to throw one of them Bad Boys on your ride ?
Didn't think so.
I'm telling you FIRST HAND that the set up with the Nitto 275/40/R17'S work Perfectly Yep I Said perfectly on stock rims even though it call for 9 inch rims. "the manufactures have to say that to cover there butt"
Just ask the 1000 of guys on this forum that have that set up if it works really well with no Ill effect.
Oh yea and your correct I'm sure you will dissagree on more time. :p

Jet, now we agree. 275's fall out of specs for an 8" rim, but people do use them. I don't.
Jet, reason I am picky is because I do not know enough to deviate from the medium. I research, ask and ask again because I am always looking for info and some of it is contradictory. I must walk the sure path as I do not know enough to improvise and solve if I get into a mess. For example, I find as many people telling me I can use the 275's on stock rims as I can find telling me not to raffle my life on it. Being the ignorant I am I just satisfy with 255's, not before I have given it a long and careful consideration.
I am not a pro at this car thing. I am a pro in other endeavors in which nothing is left to chance.
Have a nice day, Jet. I am your friend, never a hard feeling. Once you get used to me you may find me useful.

Jet,
Have the 275 Nitto's greatly improved your traction over stock tires? Are you using street Nittos or the drag radial? What kind of pricing are we talking about here? Also did the tire dealer balk at installing them on the 8 inch wheel? Just looking before I leap. Thanks, DT

I say use drag radials for the track, street tires for the street. I have Toyo T1-R on the rears 245-40-18. The tires are higher profile than the Bridgetone potenza 040,so you might be able to get away with 255-35-17 on your stock 17x8 rims. I believe in staying within manufactures specs (street application)for rim height also, but that is just my opinion. Some tire manufacturers have 255-35's for 8 inch rims but not all.

275/40/17 Toyo's in rear here, stock rims, no problems, no rubbing, no fender roll, and the traction is way better.
Toyo Stock size in front.
Tire ver: T1-S (http://www.toyo.com/tires/tire_lines/sports_car/t 1s.html)
My only regret is I went with directional tires. Since the difference in sizes between front and rear and being directional, I have to have the tires dismounted/remounted then balanced to get any rotation of tires. Can get costly. The do however seem to be wearing very well. I only got about 15k miles from stockers and they were beyond shot when I did finally replace them. Im about 12k into the Toyo's and the wear isnt even close to the old ones. Probably due to the harder Toyo's...

How do you drive your car like you stole it or conservative, because those tires aren't meant for our 8 inch stock rims, according to manufactures specs.I was afraid to go any bigger because i didn't know what would happen going 150+ on the highway, maybe the tire would spin off the rim.:eek2:
I kept the stock Bridgetone potenza on the front. The rubber was still good on the rear when i put my toyo's on so I kept the tires to put on the front when they go bad.

Im probably just as hard on my tires are most people here are. Ive hit 130mph with them without issues. Looked at them again tonight just to see how much over lap was at the lip of the rim. All I can say is yes the tire does extend beyond the rim by just the tiniest amount. While being just slightly larger than that of the stockers width wise. It is also just a fraction of an inch larger on the diameter. Again like I said, Ive had no issues what so ever with this setup. I highly recommend it to anyone getting new tires. The traction difference is quite noticable.;)

Yes the Nitto 275/40r/17's greatly improve traction Then the stock BFG'S
I have the drag radials, I haven't had any tire dealer baulk at installing them on an 8'' rim(Stock Rim)
Again I have NO Fender rolling,No rubbing even around sharp cornering.Tire overall Diameter is 25.67" Same as the stock tire Priced around $300 per pair
Here is the thing When setting up a car obviously we need to know what are main intention we are doing with the car ..........example my situation :
My goals are to have a car that I can drive around town, Cruz, Even drive warp speeds on the highway Just to see what she can do (& I'm not saying how fast):secret: also depending on how much tread is Left on them.
Most importantly going to the track with the car
If your lazy and like to have your cake and eat it to well I THINK THIS IS THE PERFECT TIRE FOR YOU I'm not saying its the best for the Strip,I'm not saying its the best for the Street But a very good all around tire based on what I do with the car.... Not bad in the rain to.... Just my opinion hope this helps and does't confuse the subject more Oh yea if you look just below what your reading right now you can see the Nitto drags going up in smoke :shiner:
I run 275/40/17 kdws' on the street, and 275/40/17 MT Drag Radials on the track. All of them are on stock rims, and I have not had any issues. I drive my car like I stole it.

Wow, I guess I should have went with a wider tire than 245-40-18. I still get good traction with the toyo T1-R in this size though, maybe next time I,ll go wider.
When I was shopping for tires, nobody gave any input when I asked which tires for the rear.:(

I have installed Goodyear F1 GS 275/40/17 on my stock 04 17x8 rims. The tires are the stock tires off of a friend of mine's 02 TA. They fit great with no rub and no fender rolling. As far as I can tell, the contact patch seems to be evenly distributed over the entire width of the tread. These tires are not new or fresh by any means, but what a huge difference in traction and stability they make over the stock tires. I drive my car conservatively for the most part, but occassionally like to hit the gas. My car is not stock and puts down over 400 to the wheels. Just trying to accelerate to move into traffic was a real challenge before to do it without spinning the car around. Now I can actually give it gas to get out of the way and the car will go without incident as long as I don't get too crazy with the gas pedal.
