View Full Version : Are any braided steel brake lines out yet?

USNGTO

I have heard that the best bang for your buck in brake mods are steel brake lines. I have spent some time searching the sponsors sites and haven't found any. (except a few of the more expensive kits out there which include them as part of a complete brake package.) Has anyone been able to find any yet?

I have the full brake package on the way from JHP in Australia, which includes braided lines. Likely they can hook you up for the lines alone, and the exchange rate makes it a good deal even with shipping. http://www.jhp.com.au/index.php

I did a search myself and I came up with this.

I don't know that I'd trust "custom" brake lines sold on EBay, but that's just me.

The "custom" brake lines that he is referring to are for the guys that have done a brake package upgrade from an early model to a late model so that they can run the different/larger calipers and keep the same original brake lines. I have a '89 commodore and I am running the '98 series brake set up with the braided lines.

Just a word of caution, make sure any steel braided brake hoses you buy are DOT approved for street use (unless you have a track use only car). Steel braided hoses do not like to twist, some tend to unbraid when subjected to twisting forces (think of wringing out a towel) created by turning the steering wheel or suspension movement. Hoses that carry a DOT approval have passed federal tests that are designed to identify such failure modes. It is not fun to have a brake hose pop, it usually happens when you REALLY need them. :driving:

Thanks blu04, you bring up an excellent point. I will keep that in mind as I shop around. I guess that kind of rules out those kits from Australia? I doubt they would be DOT approved.

JHP include braided brake lines in their brake packages - a couple of guys have bought these as complete packages.

Found these on CAPA's site, but I haven't gotten around to asking about them yet (hopefully they are TUV rated), and if that is for a set of 4 or what

Braided Brake Hose Lines $ 145.00

This might be overkill, but I am now installing the BAER brake upgrade on my 04 and both calipers come supplied with steel braided brake hoses. Kind of an expensive way to get the steel braided brake hoses but the 14 inch brakes are exactly what these GTO's need. I will post some photos as soon as I have them. These are awsome kits!

I dont work for BAER (lol)

What wheels are you running with those 14 in brakes?

SAF Forged 20 x 10's with Toyo 245 35's in the rear and 20 x 9's with Toyo 275 30's up front. Its outragious. Car is in the shop getting all this done as I type this so as soon as I have a chance you will see it all!

Well, CAPA never got back to me about their DOT approval (looking to see if they use the TUV regulation like Germany), but they sell just the lines. Also, RMR products (gto drift site) has some listed as well, but didn't see a price.

Go to your local Earl's (Holley brand) distributor with your stock hoses and have them make a set of steel-braided hoses for you. I think they call them 'hyperfirm' or something like that. They'll charge by the foot.

Not all Earl's distributors make them for you, so you might need to find a good hydraulics store that carries their products. Make sure you match up the originals to the new ones to see how exact they are before you hand any cash over. This may or may not cost you more than premade hose sets.

You should read this thread before you spend money on braided brake lines. There might be better places to put the money before you spend it there.

AP Racing has braided lines that come with their big brake kit (and they are TUV approved as well as DOT). I don't know if they length would change, and I can't image the fittings would change, so I would think those lines would fit the stock calipers.

You are aware that 245/35R20s (as well as 275/30R20) are a big 1" talled than stock?

FYI

the USDOT doesn't "approve" anything....There is a set of DOT standards and whether the manufaturer actually meets them is up to them.

Thanks to all who have posted here. I appreciate those who tried to help. I still haven't found any braided steel brake lines for my goat yet. I'm sure a kit will come out eventually. I helped a buddy do this to his WRX a few weeks ago and trust me it made a very noticeable difference. Obviously I don't think it improved braking as much as slapping on a complete set of aftermarket brakes would. But the difference was noticable and the price was much lower. To me this makes sense. I guess more people would rather just scrap the whole system and start new instead of trying to improve whats already there. Thats fine with me. Hey it's your money. Do as you please with it. I'm going to hold out though until I can get what I want. In the mean time I may put on some Corvette brake pads like some people have been doing. I think this would be another cheap but effective mod. I guess that's what I am looking for with any mod I might do right now. I want to have feel like I'm getting a good bang for my buck so to speak. I will keep looking and let you all know if I find any. Anyway I have to go now. I'm going to go cross drill my friends WRX brake lines. I'll let ya know how that works out.

I put a note into Goodridge (makers of US and Euro apps for brake lines) to see if they have any apps for the GTO. Waiting to hear back.

Check out www.wilwood.com/BrakeKits/Pages/14/index.asp. Their customerreply@wildwood.com told me part number 220-8021 will "adapt". It is 18.75" long and sells for $66.60.

Let me know what happens.

Wilwood now has a front and rear kit listed for the GTO. Thanks for the info. Now I just have to find someone who sells it. It looks like Wilwood doesn't have online ordering. :banghead: Or at least it wasn't readily visible on their webpage. I'll let you all know how it works out when I get them.

USNGTO - if your logon and location are accurate here's a valid suggestion. Get over to an AIMD at Whidbey or one of the aircraft capable ship and find the hydraulics shop. We custom fab steel braided hydraulic lines for 3000 psi just about weekly. If you have have the line and correct fitting, it's called OJT (whether yours or theirs)

Did it for a Suburban and was about 1/4 the cost of pre-fabbed. BTW - if you know the type/size fittings required, please post, I already have the line.

Yes, JHP has the correct approved ADR (Australian design rules) braided brake lines to suit Monaro/GTO. The lines are correct length, have the factory brackets, clips and angles ready to bolt-on. Price is approx $69.70 each. A great improvement over the factory spongie brake pedal.

I noticed an immediate and pleasant improvement when I put braided lines on my Grand Prix. Perhaps it's feel only, but I liked it and will do the same to the GTO.

Typically, I wouldn't advise cross drilling brake lines.

We have front and rear steel brake lines from Stoptech which can be found here... StopTech Stainless Steel Brake Lines (http://www.midwestpd.com/catalog/product_info.php ?products_id=501)
They are a little more than other kits, or the ebay kits, but they are a quality product, and brakes are something you don't want to skimp out on.

Very easy, just need to make sure you get a good bleed after install.

Russell Performance makes kits for 05-06 GTOs.
Stoptech makes kits for 04-06 GTOs.
Goodridge does not have any kits available for the GTOs.

Make sure the master cylinder never goes empty when bleeding. If it does, you have to remove the master cylinder to bench bleed it.
