View Full Version : Do Beyern 5s REALLY need hub rings???

I just got Beyern 5s from Buy Wheels Today, and when my mechanic was about to put the supplied plastic hub rings on, they didn't seem to fit, so he disgustedly just threw them in the garbage. "These are junk", he said. "You don't need them anyway". I know NOTHING about cars or wheels (I am a sportswriter and a lover), but I gave him the hub centric vs. lug centric spiel, which he dismissed with a backhand wave. "I've been doing this for 30 years and this is how we've always done it. These lug nuts are cone shaped and will center the wheels on the car AND hold them to the hub." I replied that no matter how you cut it, you have 3 mm space between the hub and the Beyerns (69.5 vs 72.5 bore) and to my logical mind, that means the weight of the car is resting on the wheel studs, not on the hub, which sounds to me like a very dangerous idea. Anyway, should I trust my logic or his 30+ years experience? I don't want to spend the $85 to get the hub rings, but I will if I REALLY need them. Opinions????? Thanks, guys.

I had some wheel shake with the hubrings I got originally. They weren't plastic but crappy thin metal. I paid the $85 for jason's hub rings and that got rid of any shake.

I was using a set of Jason's hubrings on my Profils last year. Didn't put them on this past week when I remounted my wheels again after the winter. They aren't shaking or vibrating, BUT, I'll feel better when I put them back on when I do my brakes this week. As you said, I prefer knowing that the hub is helping to support everything when I'm tearing around a high-G corner...

I put a set of tsw rims on my 04 & they came with aluminum rings.
I put them on but really dont think they are necessary. I wouldnt spend
$90 for them. Drive the car and if you dont feel anything wrong leave it the way it is.
Ive put many rims on cars before & they never needed any hub rings
Our stock rims didnt have any

When we mounted my Beyerns without the hubrings they would slide right on the hubs. With them they were a pain to get the lugs started...but man those suckers are torqued down now. I ran the car VERY hard at high speeds yesterday on our cruise and I wouldn't have done that without the hubrings...

PM csijason. He is the one who sells the billet hubrings. I didn't get a set when I bought my Beyern 5's, and the only problem I have is a slight wheel vibration. I don't worry about it too much though, because I have been over 150 MPH without incident!!

I was right next to him. They were the wrong size. Even I could see that.... One way or the other, they were no good. I just want to know how much trouble I should go to to exchange or replace them, even if it's just sending them back to BWT to get the right size.

I have a good friend who bought a new set of Beyerns from BWT (buy wheels today) and they sent hub rings that do not fit. In fact they are not even close. I told him to send them back. if no-one sends them back then BWT doesn't know they have a problem.

I let him use my extra set of hub rings from CsiJason (sp?) which fit very, very well. I use them also on my Beyern wheels. I would consider them required.

Tire Rack also sells good quality hub rings in various sizes

I don't know why you would need rings if the wheels have precision drilled tapered holes and the right lug nuts are used.
Most domestic cars do not use rings.
Don't worry, those 5 studs on each wheel are more than enough to hold up your car and then some.

A very un-informed post. Pay no attention to it.

GForce, look up "hubcentric wheels" and see why they're called that.

I guess I should have made my self a little more clear. Yes, maybe a hub centric designed wheel needs rings. But... a wheel that is not hub centric in design would not need rings to fit on a car that originaly came out with hub centric wheels.
BTW, I love Savannah, used to live there. It's my favorite city in the US.

I still don't understand what you are saying. On my last car, the OE wheels did not need rings, but any aftermarket ones definately did. REason for this is, most aftermarket manufacturers make the hub a large size to accomedate most cars. Thus, making hub centric rings essential on most cars that use said aftermarket wheels

Thanks, John. Here's the latest. I emailed Buy Wheels Today and got back a rather curt reply saying "Sorry we sen't the wrong size, but there's no such thing as a hub ring that fits a GTO using Beyern5 wheels (72.56/69.5)." So, I called back and talked to the salesman who sold me the wheels, and he said the closest thing they have is 72/69.5 and that he'll bet me that's what everyone on this forum is getting WITH THEIR WHEELS from DTD, BWT, etc., and that they're not right for our cars, but he'll be happy to send me a set. I know CsiJason is having custom ones made and selling them to us. The only question I have is whether anyone has stock rings that fit properly. Thanks, everyone, for your input.

BTW, to take the story full circle, I originally ordered the wheels from Discount Tire Direct, and they sent them without hub rings (which were promised by the salesman) and they also sent the wrong offset (15 vs. 40). After I sent them back, I waited two weeks for the right offest, only to be told after several emails and phone calls that they couldn't get them within the 1-2 weeks they promised and that it might be months before they do. So, I canceled and got them from BWT.

I'd be curious to know where Coop43 originally got the wheels and hub rings. Glad you're having success with the hub rings. Continued good luck....

Yes that is correct, Discount Tire in Elgin, IL. Its like you said Chris its hard to get the lugs started with the rings on lol. The rings stuck on when I took the Beyern's off and when I tried to put the stock's back on and I was like wtf. Since I painted my hubs the rings were barely noticeable. :drink:

As far as size I'm not exactly sure, all I did is told him to double check that the rings were supposed to be included for a 2004 GTO.
