View Full Version : Can someone explain this

I've had the wheel shake problem and was doing some basic troubleshooting by putting my stock wheels and tires back on front/rear to see if if I could isolate it down.

I noticed something very strange on the rear wheels.

The distance that the hub sticks out from the rotor surface is not the same all around. You can also see that the lug studs don't come out the same distance from the rotor surface all around. It was consistent on both the drivers and passenger side. This seems really odd to me.

Perhaps it straightens out when the lugs are tightened down, but It sure did not seem like there was any play.

Anyone else notice this? Can anyone explain it?

The rotor is held in by the pressure from the wheel being tightened down. If it really makes you nervous just put the lug nuts on the studs and snug them down without the wheel on, then measure them.

I know that the lugs hold the rotors in place, but they typically stick and are a PITA to break loose.

I will have to take another look with the lugs on just to verify, but there was no obvious play. They do feel a little strange in the rear when tightening up the wheels, so maybe there is something that forces the rotor out on one side.

I'll check tonight and post again.

Ok, checked it again tonight.

Sure enough the rotors pop to one side and bind in place when the rear wheels come off. Not sure why, but it must have something to do with the caliper position in the rear. You can't force them back by hand, but it does straighten out with the lugs on.
