View Full Version : Just an experiment...

What's up everyone. My buddy J's family owns a tire shop here in Dallas. We were kicking around some idea's for some wheels on my '05 PBM. J suggested that I let him experiment with my stock (18's) shoes.

He started by media blasting the finish and paint off of the stock wheels down to the bare aluminum. He hand polished the lip of the wheel and then taped off 1/4" of the lip. After that the wheels were powdercoated. On top of the powdercoat he put an awesome charcoal metallic color down. J finished with too many layers of clearcoat to admit. I was shocked when I saw them on the car. They look like different wheels in person. I posted some pictures of the wheels with this message, but I don't think they do the color and finish justice.

Let me know what you think...

I'm in the same boat. Just got 18"s from a member here. I don't want to go black, thought chrome, but got mixed reactions from friends, think I want something in between yours and stock color though.

Those look cool, very unique.

Those look awesome. Very creative and most people (non GTO owners) would think those are aftermarket.

Ya know....I hate to admit it, but I think I like it. I'd have taped off a bit more of the lip to give it some more contrast, but for the most part, I think they look great! Tastefully done. Congrats.

Thanks bro. We thought exactly the same thing, we wanted to do 1/2". The problem was that the spokes actually push in to the line of the lip and would have made taping off any more of the lip much tougher. It is hard to explain with out being able to show you what I am talking about. Thanks again.

Nice job, Works well with the black goat...
I have been thinking about something along those lines... I've got Torrid red and just cant think of a good color... Nitto DRs are alot cheeper for a 17 wheel.....

Your buddy did a fantastic job on yours....

It was mentioned that the posted pictures did not do the wheels justice. Even if that is not taken into consideration, those wheels look very good. Is there any chance to get a shot of the whole car in better lighting?

Capital "Suh" - small 'weet'

I have PMB as well. I am working with a great custom shop - Danny Irby in Santa Cruz, CA. He is cleaning up the boot this weekend. I am going to take a page out of your book and get the lip service that you did - Danny and I had talked about that kind of tip of the hat to the old rallye trim rings...but I think we are going with a different color - we'll post pictures in about a week...

those look sweet, it looks like he took the time effort and necessary to powdercoat correctly, that lip makes a HUGE diff.

One day. They also do stock wheel repair for many of the highend dealers here in Dallas. It is amazing the money they can save some of the curb checking high dollar car owners here in Dallas.

I think the body shop did a Fantastic job on them. Those would look great on a Yellow Goat, I'm not a fan of Black wheels on a Black Car, sorry.

dude....I usually dislike painted/powdercoated stock wheels because the all grey/black look doesn't seem to work with no lip...

Those on the other hand came out REALLY nice!

I think you just conivinced me to keep the 18's around for the drag radials after I get new wheels.

I had planned on trading them with another member for his 17's and a little cash and putting DR's on the 17's and painting em black, but the 18's look SO sweet that color, and I have a friend that can do he same thing with em (powdercoat them and polish the lip at least).

I know it seems like a waste of money to powdercoat my "track" wheels... but I like to look good, but don't want to be forced to be on black wheels all the time if I don't like them (I'm a real conservative guy when it comes to wheels... I dont do colors) They will see some street duty every once in a while too... if ya catch my drift :gr_devil:.

I guess it'll be an experiment of my own. THANKS FOR THE INSPIRATION!!! Looks amazing!!

Those look outstanding. How much $$ would that cost on 17s.

One question though, who the hell did the bungy jump to get the second pic? :gr_jest:

I'm planning on doing the same thing, but maybe a lighter grey, not sure if i'll keep the lip like yours though :)

I love the factory wheels, but man I wish I could fit some more meat on them. I'm debating beyerns even though i'm not a huge fan, just because I got a deal I may not be able to pass up.

Thanks. $75-125 depending on exaclty what you want. Mine would be on the higher end of that, due to the hand polished lip.

These 18's are a pretty good canvas for the right artist. IMHO the polished lip will set off what ever color you decide on. Either way if you don't like it, it is a piece of cake to back to stock color and finish. If someone was willing to spend the money for the labor, these wheels would look sweet stripped to the bare aluminum and polished. Very different look from chrome. Hmmm.....

Thanks for the feedback bro.

Figure i'll give it a try, if it looks completely stupid, just redo it :)

Is that for the bungy jump or the wheels? :gr_jest:

If you could, please p/m me what I need to get this done, if the shop is willing to do this outside the experiment.
