HPE-S Cam Valvetrain Noise Question.

I have recently installed the HPE-S Cam and have noticed the usual sowing machine valvetrain noise at most RPM. But recently i have noticed that after driving for about an hour or so on hot days, approx 80 degree +, I get a very noisey valvetrain noise at about 3K RPM. It is still not a cylinder specific sound, but sounds like it is coming from multiple cylinders. Just like a very loud amplification of the normal sowing machine noise. I let the car sit for about 3-4 hours and go for a drive and the noise is gone until it warms up after a bout an hour. Any thoughts???

I checked oil pressure and it is perfect,

Is it alright for me to be running Mobil1 0W-40 with this high lift cam???

Thank for all opinions and input.

I'm sure you put on new valve springs right? If so that should be what you are talking about.

All springs are on right, i had to put the stock cam back in for a while, and with the dual springs, hardend pushrods and the stock cam the noise went away, when HPE cam was reinstalled the noise cam back.

Do you think 0-40 is to light?? Should i go with the 10w40??

i would 0-40 seems light for our engines especially for being modded but they stii make noise its normal.....

Thanks, im going to pull the valve covers to check torque on rockers and take a visual on the springs just for piece of mind. I will use 10w 40 Mobil1 for now on. Thanks. Does Mobil1 make 10W-40, i never say that at the store. Where did you get it Ponyeater????

Check your lifter preload.

I have had the S Cam for a year now. That noise is normal. The cam is ground with the XER lobe profile which has a very aggressive ramp rate. Basically it is slamming the valves open and closed. Its the nature of the beast. If you ever get a sound that is cylinder specific, then you have a problem. You should be using 7.4" pushrods with this cam. I have approx 15k miles on my S cam.

Thanks, thats exactly what i wanted to hear!!!! Are the 7.4 pushrods what comes with the HPE Package??? I forgot what they said when I installed it. I might take one out to make sure.

I don't have an S cam, but the sewing machine noise is pretty loud on my car, especially if your also running LT headers

Either way, it's still a 40 weight.

As for the noise, I get the same noise myself. I've been told replacing the 7.400 pushrods with 7.425 will give you a little more pre-load and help "tighten things up" and in turn, quiets it down. FWIW.

I am running 7.375" pushrods on my flowtech setup. Noisy but I trust Ed's calculations and expertise. I check my oil constantly and am not worried about anything. So it's noisy..nature of the beast IMO.
