View Full Version : 18x9" TSW Catalunyas still rubbing....

I have had my fenders cut and installed the pedders OEM height springs as well as the pedders big bore shocks. I have the 18x9" 40mm offset Catalunyas with 275 nitto 555s and they are still rubbing when I turn into an incline or when I do some hardcore turns under power. When I bought these tires from Discount Tire they assured me that they would get the offsets right but I have been hearing that 45mm is a much better offset. I am not really sure what to do here. Should I just go back to Discount Tire and try to exchange them for the other offset? I don't think they even make this wheel in the correct offset. If I have no luck with Discount Tire does anyone know of anyone in Michigan who is capable of changing the offset?

40mm will work with an 18x8 (that's what I have) but with anything wider, you want at least 45mm, and even then it's iffy. I'm surprised the Pedder's springs didn't help much, aren't they supposed to give you another 1/2" or so? Of course, the 275's have alot to do with it too

The Pedders springs and shocks did help ALOT. Before, I could not even have passengers in the back seats without it rubbing on even the widest turns. Now, I can have four passengers and drive fine with almost no rubbing, even under heavy acceleration and turning. The only things that really make it rub is VERY hard turning and turning onto inclined roads with medium speed. Also, the pedders springs and big bore shocks eliminated all my wheel hop :)
I have been looking at the TSW inventory on their website and I can't find a 45mm offset version of the wheels. My wheel's item number is 1880CAT405120B76 if you care to look here is the link :

I think drag bags will solve your rubbing problems. It might make your ride comfort a little rough though since you already have stiffer springs.
You could also try spring blocks from Autozone or Pepboys. They're just rubber blocks that you insert between the spring coils to stop them from compressing too much. I've used them before with no problems.

Has anyone ever changed the offsets on their wheels? Where would I get something like that done?

with that you would be rubbing on the inner fender or clearance issues with the supension.
52mm works great on a 9" (rear only)

I have 19" 8.5" wide 40mm offset on the back with 245/35's and I just barely make it without having to roll. I'm no expert but it sounds like you need more offset to accomodate those 9" 275's.

OFFSETS GREATER THAN SHOWN ABOVE WILL RUB ON REAR FENDER LIP (25MM FENDER LIP)
I remember reading this chart a long time ago. It's not accurate.
"OFFSETS GREATER THAN SHOWN ABOVE WILL RUB ON REAR FENDER LIP"
This is not right. Greater offset keeps the wheel AWAY from the fender lip, so if the offset is greater than shown, it will be less likely to rub the fender lip.
"9.5 +55/64 265/275/285"
Am I reading this right? Up to +64 mm offset with a 9.5" wheel? That's not right either. Even 55mm is starting to get too high for a 9.5" wheel. It's going to rub the tough steel on the INNER wheel well.
Don't follow this chart. It will get you into trouble. And I'm saying that to help out, not to be an ass. For the rear, you want as close to +52 offset as possible regardless of the wheel width/diameter. The smaller the wheel is, the more room you have for error.

It will bring it in more. It will rub the INNER wheel well or suspension.

Venon, If I'm going to be running 18x9.5 thruxtons in the rear with a 45mm offset... how much will I need to roll/grind the fenders? Approx 8-10mm is what I figured.

Bobthephotoguy has the exact same wheel specs. He did all he could do on the fender and then needed stiffer springs. He says they still rub on rough turns.

Venom,
If you go greater....meaning +55 or LESS then it will rub. So you dont want to have a +54,+53+52 etc......if your using a 9.5.Remember negative goes out and positive goes in. If you go to in then it will rub on the inside part of the wheel well.

I know this because I tested what that chart states. This is direct from Discount Tires....All these sizes where tested including my set which rubbed when I tried to go a little bigger....Also the offset has nothing to do with the height and how it rides.

Alright, I am going to go to Discount Tire and see what they say when I tell them they gave me the wrong offsets. I don't think that TSW even makes 18x9 with the right offsets. I need 120 PCD right? Does anyone run the 18x9.5 45mm offset TSW Thruxtons with 275 nitto 555s w/ cut fenders, pedders oem height springs, and big bore shocks with no problems?

I think that they make one wheel with the correct offset for a 18x9. Pretty sure, but check www.tsw.com to see for sure.

I've run a 19x9.5 w/ a 45 mm with oem shocks, oem springs and dragbags with fenders rolled.

I'll tell you what I know for certain. I have an 18X9 wheel with 275 tires. My offset is +52 and it rubs the INNER wheel well! I had to beat back the tough steel with a sledge hammer and crowbar. It was ugly work.
So, if I'm having problems with a +52 offset, I know for 100% certain that the range of +55/64 is wrong.
Alexandria-GTO was also rubbing the plastic in the INNER wheel well with an 18X9 +50 wheel.

I finally got to Discount Tire and they said that my new wheels would be here next week :D I decided to go with the Mondellos with 45mm offset. I really only had a choice between the Mondellos and the Thruxtons and I didn't want anymore problems going a half inch wider with the Thruxtons.

I have tsw nogaros 18x9 +45 with 245 bfg drag radials and they do not rub at all. I am waiting on my 19x9.5 +45 with 275 street tires on them and I know that people have run them with rolled fenders.

I've run a 19x9.5 w/ a 45 mm with oem shocks, oem springs and dragbags with fenders rolled.
You don't any issues with rubbing (even under hard turns)? Just wondering, I want to get the same setup.

Hey I am running 19x8.5 front with a 35mm offset and 19x9.5 rear 40mm offset. I did have to roll the fenders but after I rolled them there has been no problems at all.

One thing to consider, especially if not running with the stock suspension. Get a cradle alignment and rear camber correction bushings. After everything is aligned the variables are minimized. This alone sometimes eliminates the rubbing problems. It eliminated my occasional rub with rolled fenders on large bumps with 275s and ET45 TSWs.

I have the 18x9.5 Thruxtons. I grinded all but 10mm away. They still rub every once in a while and that is with no passengers. I am going to cover the fenders and inner wheel well with masking tape and found out exactly where the rubbing is still going on. When I find it I am going to kill it.

Dollars to Donuts it's where the bumper cover meets the wheel well...
