View Full Version : Looking for cheap steel rims. What fits??
I need a few spares to take with me for difting and I can't afford good rims. If I went to a junkyard to look for rims....
Would I find any that would fit?
What other cars, if any, would I look for?
Really, does anyone think I would have a chance of finding rims in a junkyard that I can use??
thanks
No response yet?!
Well I did a little research and only found that BWM's are using 5x120 bolt pattern.
5 on 120mm (4.72")
BMW 2500, 2800, 3.0, 520, 530, 630, 730
BMW - all 5 bolt to '89
Now add the fact that not all use 45mm offset and the hub sizes are different I suspect that finding rims in the junkyard will be difficult.

I did inquire at Discount Tires about steel rims for winter use. They did not
have any or know of any that would work. The BMW bolt pattern works but
I am not sure about offsets.

Your best bet is buying stock rims off someone who has upgraded.
I sold two of mine, pretty cheap. I'm keeping the other two just in case.

Same here, I need 2 for my drag radials. I don't care what they look like. Does anyone know of any wheels that will match stock 17"s exactly (8.5" or 9" wide is preferred but 8" wide is fine) that don't cost an arm and a leg? I can't seem to find anything.

If somebody was clever, they would import a container of Commodore steel rims and sell them to GTO owners for winter/sports use.
The Commodore steel rim is 15"X6".

I just put in a request at a pretty reputable custom steel racing wheel manufacturer for pricing. I will let you know what I find out. If you or anyone else wants to make a similar request to this place then by all means do so. If they see a high level of interest from us maybe that will lower the price and get us a quicker response.

5-120mm with 45mm offset is correct right?

5-120mm with 45mm offset is correct right?
More or less. 48mm is the precise offset, I believe.
What size rims? I'd like some 15x9(or10)'s with 26x10 MTs or ETs.
Let us know how it goes, especially pricing.

That's actually what I was thinking... I checked the Trading Post's web site (www.tradingpost.com.au) and there are a few places over there selling them pretty cheap. Will a 15" wheel actually fit? And 6" may be a little narrow...
If anyone's interested search for commodore ex chasers or commodore steel under the Parts, Accessories and Service links...
A little late.
I was hoping to find cheap rims but ran out of time. I decided to spend the money now instead of the spring. I'm thinking of getting these.

I haven't seen anyone go with dark rims yet. I like them. It must be the dark look I'm going after.
The rims will be wrapped with Toyo Proxy 4 245/40 18.
Now I can use-up the stock tires on Saturday :p
EDIT: Forgot the wheel type - VOX Saga 18x8 40mm os

It looks like they can make pretty much anything in any size as far as steel wheels are concerned. Hopefully I will hear something back soon and I will let ya'll know.

Well Diamond Racing Wheels replied with the following:
"We have nothing to fit this application. You will need an alloy wheel in order to get the right back spacing to fit this car. Try Weld Racing or Circle Racing Wheels as they might make something that will work."
So I am following that lead now...but their prices don't look to be low at all. :banghead:

Did a little research. BMW 3 series black steel rims usually used for winter tires: 17x7, 5/120, 45mm offset. The only issue left is that they are not "hub-centric". I do not know what that means, but shops won't put them on because of it. Can any wheel/tire guys clarify here? It would be nice if these worked because you can find them on-line for under $60 a wheel.

In the 15" steel wheels, they actually come out in 7" width and alot of places sell them for about $30-50 per wheel with a tyre, so even cheaper without tyres on them.....also on ebay a lot of cheap alloy wheels in the 15x7 range, just get the seller to strip the tyres off before shipping.
I would have liked to get a set of 15x7 w/tire for $30-50. I find it hard to believe though. Any links?

What hub-centric means is that the wheel is centered on the car by the hub (think of it as hub-centered). On a hub centric fit there is a fairly tight fit between the center hole of the back side of the wheel and the machined Hub on the spindle. There are two main things that make this setup ideal.
One Is the clamping. In a hub centric design, the lugs studs and nuts really only hold the rim to the rotor and the rotor (which is also hub-centric) to the spindle/hub. The second huge advantage is that wheels are usually centered on a wheel balancer by the center hole of the wheel. They are balanced as if they were hub centric, in the car. So if they are balanced hub centric and they are installed LUG-Centric (the other option) It is a major roll of the dice whether the lug nuts will actually center the wheel as well as the hub centric design would. Any error would result in Radial Runout (verticle as mounted to the car.) I have done measurements on smaller, lighter wheel tire assemblies (P195/74R14) and this was roughly the correlation. (Driver's seat experience would be worse in our case because of the car design, weight and stiffness of the whell tire assemby) .020" runout error induces the equivalent of 25# imbalance force on the spindle of the vehicle at about 60MPH. Is it possible to minimize the on car runout versus off car? Yes to some extent and it is very trial and error.
The other concern with-lug centric mounting is whether the wheel will stay on the car. No kidding. There is no revised torque spec for lug centric designs to help with this. A very large auto manufacturer had to try a couple of times to get it right on the 4wd trucks. First they redesigned the nuts, then they had to send out a bulletin to make sure lug nuts were retorqued within 500 miles, two years later they increased the stud size and raised the wheel torque by 50%!
So the short answer is vibration and liability is why your shops wont install them. I too am looking for cheap ugly wheels for my blizzaks, but do not consider lug-centric (Non-hub-centric) an option.

Will a 15x7 wheel actually clear the brakes on these cars? I want a set of steel wheels to run Blizzaks on also. If we wanted a 15" wheel for racing on the Camaro we had to do a bunch of grinding on the calipers. The GTO brakes are the same size as the Camaro's right?
