Will LS1 starter work on LS2?

My starter is taking a crap on me. I can't find one locally anywhere. I have had all the parts places check anything from an 02 camaro, 05 GTO, 04 Escalade, 05 corvette, etc....and they don't stock any of them. Will the starters from an LS1 fit the LS2? I can find several starters available online that say they fit 02-04 camaro and corvette. But will they fit a gto? I have been searching the web for 2 days and can't find the sold info I need.

No. The GTO has a different nose. The 04-06 GTO starter will interchange. None of the others will work after we checked the lister number. If you have a starter/alternator rebuilding place local, you can check there as I did, they know what lister numbers are. Mine crapped out and I wanted a high torgue but found that only the three years will fit and no high torque...so I started working on something that is needed for us.

Yes the ls1 starter will work. The only difference is on the starter itself the ls2 has to holes for each bolt to go through but the ls1 starter yhas two holes for one bolt and the other bolt only has one hole to go through so you hace to use a shorter bolt for that one. I went with the ls1 starter because it was way cheaper then buying the factory one for the goat. Go to auto zone or advanced auto parts and ask for a starter for a 99-2002 camaro and you will be good to go. Get a rebuilt one and it will be even cheaper and still come with a warranty. Besides if for some crazy reason you cant get it on you can just return the part to the store but I know it worked on my gto and has plenty of torque to start my car which is a 408 iron block.

- also check your ground wires to make sure you dont have a ground loose and that its really your starter going out. I had one loose on my car down on the block behind the dipstick and it made the starter not work. Once I tightened it down the car started fine. Some times they dont hook up all the ground that well after a motor build, always a good idea to check them out-- its free lol

^^^will be looking into this since I alreaady have had one fail and been told nothing else will work, good to know.

After rereading what you said, you don't have the GTO block anymore, that might be the difference. I will pick up one off these starters and mock it up on the GTO LS1 that I have on my engine stand. If it works I'll take pictures and post up the part numbers.

I can get you the part number I used. I will call auto zone and have them look up my purchase history for me. Easier then going home to check it.

go to a starter/alternator shop, they should be able to put it on the bench, and hopefully fix it for you!

Also check out the MSD starter for the LS series motors. I was a bit surprised at the cost. Less than what I was expecting.

So far the least I have found the MSD for was $240. I haven't looked hard though. I found a rebuilt high torque for $89 a few minutes ago. I am going to order it and see how it works. Even if mine isn't bad I need the high torque because mine drags ass pretty bad with my motor on 12.2 compression.

Ok, still confused here - I have fbody LS1 and 05 GTO T56 - I also have what I think is an LS1 starter and it won't work - the nose is too large and the mounting block is too tall (portion the bolts go through). Now I searched the p/n for this starter and came up empty so I'm not sure what it is (p/n = 92156802). I thought about the gear reduction starters - more torque and about the same $ as OEM starter - but here again most say they fit LS series - they don't differentiate between LS1/LS2/etc - can they really be "universal"?

What doesn't fit - can you provide some details. This is on a LS2 -a matched combo not a mis-match like my fbody LS1/GTO T56?
