New noise - clicking upon acceleration

Driving recently with open windows, I started hearing some weird clicking noise echoing off other cars or buildings.

At first I thought it was someone else rust bucket doing this, but the noise followed me.

The noise is cyclic ot at least seems to be. It kind of sounds like an aluminum coke can stuck to the tire, slapping on something.

But there is nothing stuck to any of my tires.

There is no noise when I am cruising along at any speed (unless the wind noise is masking it).

Just when I press the go pedal from low speeds the clicking comes out.

What could it be?

Or something stuck in your tire?

Or not...just reread your post.

still original factory rotors and pads

P.S. while looking for source of clicking discovered the PS hose and surrounding area soaked in ATF. Again. These hoses don't hold their fluids very well.

You replace the clamps? Mine just needed a bit more tightening.

Actually a few months ago a dealer replaced that PS hose for me and it didn't leak for a while.

Also the clicking noise kind of sounds like an air impact wrench, maybe not as strong though.

Also I can't figure out exactly how to reproduce it.

For example, I noticed the noise in the stop and go traffic on the way from work to Tower Shops (Friday night car show), the noise was reflecting from other cars and jersey barriers.

Then I chilled with the GTO crowd at Tower Shops for about an hour.

Then I got on the road again, trying to listen for the noise. There was even a nice fly-over onramp that I had to take - jersey barriers on both sides. I tried all kinds of goosing it and was not able to hear any noise then.

Then by the time I got home and got off the highway, I heard the noise again while driving on local streets.

I wonder if this is something temperature related.

Perhaps your exhaust is hitting somewhere like back by the differential yolk? Dunno.

You have an A4 or M6?

Mine is A4

Can this be manually checked by shaking exhaust pipes?

FWIW I have recently had rear springs replaced with Lovells, but I don't think the noise is coming from there, they are sitting in there solidly.

Stock height, or dropped?

I sort of doubt that's what it is, but I was just grasping at straws. If you have jack stands and can get under the car, if the exhaust is hitting anywhere, it should be obvious. You can try to shake the tips a bit, but I don't know if you'd be able to move it much.

If you were an M6, I had another suggestion.

stock height

I already crawled under the car and tried shaking the exhaust pipes - nothing is hitting anything there.

Do you have an airbox? Check the airbox... maybe something got sucked up and its sitting on the bottom underneath the filter... that's all I can think of..

Check your half shafts. the GTO's are known to have the allen bolts come lose and then they start to make a clicking noise. Check the torque on all of them.

Sorry about being a noob, what side of the half shaft are the allen bolts on and what is the required torque?

If you crawl under he back side of the car you'll see a bunch of allen bolts on the wheel side as well as the diff side. check every bolt. as for torque spec. I can't find an exact number so just use an allen key that will fit and get some leverage and make sure they're all snug. A friend of mine used to have that problem with his bolts coming loose all the time. FYI, DONT use any thread locker on them if that is your problem.
