Sounds Expensive!!

I have been hearing a slight squeek sound coming from the rear end when driving, i thought it was the breaks. I stopped at a jiffy lube the guy said i am getting close on the breaks but that where the squeek was coming from. I had him check my rear diff. fluid levels, he said it was full and looked good. Tonight i was at publix and started my car up and i hear this terrible squeeking sound coming from the rear end. The car was in park!!! What in the smurfing hell could make a squeek/squeel sound from the rear end of a parked car!!?? WTF.

can anyone help me? For the most part the car seems to be driving normally. btw its and 04 ls1, cam upgrade, tune, rebuilt tranny,no muffler with 62k miles. I dont know if there has been any suspension work as i am not the original ower. I am almost 100% positive the sound was coming from the rear. What could it be?

Update, just went outside and listened again. It is not coming from the rear. Its coming from under the hood i can hear it best under the passenger side front tire. I hit the accelerator and the squeel is still there, the car still rev's just fine. WTF!!?? i dont think it is belts b/c i put my ear pretty close to the belt area but it sounded like it came from further back in the engine bay if not directly under the car...HELP my wallet feels like it is about to burst into flames.

I have had bad luck recently, I busted my main window switch in the center console by putting pressure on it trying to put my kid in the back seat . -$25 ebay new switch.

I have a feeling it going to be something really expensive like my torque converter or something else stupid.

From the sounds of it, sounds like it's gotta be coming from the belts or drive system. Is it a squeal like nails on a chalkboard, or is it more of a high-pitched whirring noise?

nails on a chalk board kinda sum it up. It sounds like when a piece of crap drives by that really kinda high pitch kinds sound. I hate trying to describe sounds on a forum. Its absolutly ridiculose (sp?) I dont know...I dont like it one bit.

Change the belts. Usually the culprit.

I'm having the same problem.. I think it's the water pump leaking from the weep hole onto one of the belts. It didn't sound like it was coming from the belts it sounded like it was coming from the middle of the car like you said.. but then my low coolant light came on.. LOL check your coolant level!

Start your car.

While it is squealing, pour a litte fresh water on your serpentine belt. If it immediately stops for a few seconds, it's more than likely the belt just needs replaced.

Took it to the shop..Guess what it was.

One of my exhaust hangers had broken and it was the metal rubbing together from where it snapped. My wallet is starting to cool down...No charge from my mechanic.

Wow, i sooo happy!!

gerry, You were right about the water and the belts thing, the belts were making noise and the water confermed it. +10 GERRY

I hate breaking out the plastic for car stuff. my car car has been very expensive ever since i bought her, not only do i pay around 326 a month, but i had the tranny replaced and every sensor under the sun has gone bad on her at once. I had to add to my car loan just to fix the tranny. Very expensive upkeep. I love her though

I dont know if the guy that owned it before me ever changed out the belts..I bought it with 48k, i am currently at 62k and my mechanic said my belt are looking "glazed over" so i would say prolly change em' out around 55k to avoid problems..Im no mechanic so take what i say with a grain of salt.
