When I go to Austin on business, I usually stay at the Holiday Inn Town Lake. Right on the edge of downtown, garage parking available, and normally not too pricey.

Me too. And if they are going to use the same shuttle points as for F1, I'll get a hotel near the shuttle, not near the track.

I know y'all have all been waiting for a first-hand report from the track, and here it is.

First and foremost, GO TO THE RACE

The track is smurfing awesome and you need to see it. Unfortunately the supercars won't be running the grand prix circuit, so they won't get to run through turns 8-11 which are really cool. But still, get out there as soon as you can and check out everything. Get the weekend pass and on the first day just walk around and see what all you can see from the various points around the track.

Don't be scared by people claiming it will take 3 or 4 hours to get to or from the track. They did an excellent job getting everyone in and out with minimal wait time. And hopefully the roads should be improved before this race is run.

There's nothing wrong with the GA tickets and there are plenty of good spots around the track to view the action. If you do get reserved seats though, the ones at the top of turn one are probably the best (and they are also the most expensive).

If you're staying all day, bring water and food. They will let you bring in water but you'll have to hide the food. Before I went I bought one of those backpacks with the watter pouch inside. Academy has one of their Magellan branded ones for $40, and it paid for itself with the amount of water I was able to carry and the amount of food I snuck in. They did kinda check the bags, but they didn't really dig in them or anything. Food and water prices inside the grounds are stupid high, but I don't know if they will be lower for these smaller races.

I don't know what the parking situation will be like come May, but some of y'all might consider renting an RV or three and taking it up there if those spots are available. There are 200 "premium" RV spots that are inside the track fence, but those are licensed and I doubt they'll be available (and if they are, they won't be cheap). The RVs that were parked inside were all huge 6-figure rolling tour-bus type jobs. But if there are spots availble on the grounds, the RVs should be cheap since mid-May is off season for them. And you can all park together and have your food and beer and whatnot there with you at the track. AND I'm told there are groups coming from New Orleans and Florida too so maybe y'all can coordinate with them and get a caravan going or some shit.

Also buy a sombrero. There's not much shade out there, especially not once the temporary stands are removed.

Just some advice. Get a hotel NOW. Was planning on going to F1 months ago and literally every single hotel in Austin was sold out. If they weren't, then normally a $100 room was going for $500 or more. Friends were talking about renting an RV to drive down because of the room shortage...

The prices started coming down as the date got closer. They didn't fill the way they thought they would and people were willing to stay farther from town. And there won't be as many people coming in for the supercars as there were for F1. If you look at the hotel prices now with the race 5 months away, the prices are pretty normal. 5 months before the F1 race the prices were way way higher.

i had heard that alot of hotels blocked off a bunch of rooms at that crazy rate and ended up releasing them last week because they werent booked up.

f1 was awesome, and the suite seats @ turn 19 was the bees knees.
we already have ga tix for the supercars race, so cant wait for that.

the track was laid out very nicely, and traffic wasnt as near as bad
as the scare mongers made it out to be.

This is an awesome 360 photo from the observation tower (which is not a free ride, btw):
http://360photopro.com/circuit-of-th...as/tower-view/

That picture was taken fairly early in the morning and you can see how many people were already camped out on the grass by turn 1. If you look over the other side you can see the elevation changes on turns 8-11 and also see the cutover for the sports car circuit.

The MotoGP bikes will be racing the full circuit and I'm planning to go back for that if any of y'all are interested.

I was surprised at the amount of elevation change on the rest of the course. Turn 1 is all that ever got talked about. My V8 tickets are in turn 15. Motogp will be a last-minute decision. And I'm going to do my best to make it to the Grand Am races also. And go help crew for a friend racing there with SCCA in the Spring. And the WEC and ALMS. And maybe Indy Car.

I think I should find a few like-minded people and just rent an apartment out there instead of staying in hotels.

There's an idea. Here's one near the airport, which is about as close as you can get to the track right now:
http://santoravillas.com/floorplans.html

3bd/2ba 1100sqft could probably sleep 8-10 people for $850 a month.

I might bring my goat from SC to Austin for this.

Seriously, guys, someone should get in touch with G8 boards and CoTA or one of the Holden teams. Surely someone, somewhere would support a bunch of captive imports getting together.

It would be pretty bomb if we could do a parade lap. Obviously no stupid shenanigans going on. And for that reason, they probable won't.

They don't have an email listed on the V8 Supercars site, only an address and phone number...

Put me on the maybe list. I'll make a few calls in early January when people start coming back to work to see if we can get something going. Holden AU may be interested in a parade lap, they'd probably have more interest in it than anyone else and would have more weight to throw around. I've seen Porsche parade laps at Petit le Mans for everyone that paid to park in the Porsche pit... but then again you have to pay to park anywhere in the infield, so maybe it would work out here.

Anyone know of a main thread on G8board for the race? Maybe with a list of people going- it's nice to be able to say we have so many cars definitely attending.

I'm a strong maybe. I've been hoping to catch this race and/or motogp for a while now, but my first baby arrives early March and it's not clear yet how easy / difficult it will be to get away for a weekend...
