Close Call

I've been ve tuning my 04 for a couple days now. It was getting really close.

I took an animal to the vet and was doing what I thought was my last log as the high cells were only 4%.

Came out of the vet, copy and pasted the scan to the tune, hit write and BOOM. Error with a warning to not unplug any fuses or battery. Tried a write entire and the program went into a loop. Every time it failed I'd loose connectivity to the scanner.

After trying this several times I decided I might have a corrupt hpt file. I loaded the base file I started with, and did a write entire. About 20 min later the car fired to life.

Lesson: Don't flash ecu when I'm 25 mi from home with a pet in the car.

I have no idea how to tune anything, and I am in NO place to laugh/criticize..but this made me chuckle little. Good lesson...I know I would never attempt something like that.

I've flashed tunes away from home and had minor scares but not like that. It is a good idea to flash at home but a lot of my WOT tuning was done at a track

I've been flashing in parking lots after logging for a while. The software works so good it's a shock when something goes wrong. I already had my insurance towing card out .

p.s. I wouldn't have minded if I hadn't had the pet. Think I'll put a spare ECU in the trunk(lol)

I've done it twice before. Nothing freaks you out more seeing the entire dash light up with every single light and the computer essentially saying "you smurfed up".

Pulled the battery terminals and reconnected, reloaded the tuner and tune, reflashed, and on my merry way.

I thought about the battery thing, but there was a specific warning not to power down the ECU. I've since read on HPT that that is what they recommend. Go figure.

Send a message via AIM to slow
it depends on where it fails if you want to disconnect the battery, on a full image reflash, if it has not written the first 0x4000 bytes the pcm will be a paperweight.

Disconnecting the battery gets a lot more fun with an intercooler tank sitting on top of it!
